GCW’s 24-hour telethon style wrestling marathon show continues on into the night! After the unexpected power/stream outage, we’re back up at 11pm with the sequel to the Collective’s “For the Culture” on the airwaves. Feel free to ride along with these wrestling reports here and my ongoing levels of non-awakeness on Twitter (@juliusblaise).
The FITE stream is back up but we have no audio so I’ll do my best. GCW’s Brett Lauderdale promises a full For the Culture show so we’ll see how this affects later blocks.
Match 1: Cameron Jackson & Mike Outlaw vs Kings of the District (Jordan Blade & Eel O’Neal)
Jackson & Outlaw abuse the pre-fight handshake and take it right to Blade and O’Neal. O’Neal gets worked over until he tags in Blade, who immediately drags Jackson to the mat and grinds him out. Outlaw tags in....and the stream restarts.....we’re back! We have audio!!!! Seriously, much love to the tech folks working through these issues in real time. I HAVE BEEN THERE AND IT’S AWFUL. Anyways back to the wrestling! Blade with a huge dropkick to the back of Jackson’s head. She works with O’Neal for some good tandem combos. Jackson & Outlaw get in and we go back and forth with punches. Blade manages to isolate Outlaw and stretches him to the point of submission.
Winners: The Kings of the District
This was a good match. The work was solid and good and I enjoyed what I saw but it was absolutely overshadowed by the audio issues and feed coming from the tech table, instead of commentary. I look forward to a hopefully remixed version of this with the intended (or re-recorded) audio from commentary. The folks in the ring deserve that, if it’s possible.
Match 2: PB Smooth vs Calvin Tankman
Tankman is technically the smaller man in this contest! The MUCH taller Smooth is working Tankman over with strikes and boots, while stretching his shoulder. PB Smooth traps Tankman in a Ring’s of Saturn but Cal muscles him out. PB slips it and hits a powerslam and legdrop for a near fall. Tankman goes for the finish with a backfist to the back of the head but Smooth ain’t done. Smooth all over Tankman and trying to submit him. Tankman escapes and hits an Indestructible Driveron PB Smooth to get the emphatic pin.
Winner: Calvin Tankman
PB Smooth had a clear game plan here. He was motivated to take it to Tankman, who clearly has a problem with his submission game. Tankman is still a tank, man. And he powered through and hit some heavy artillery to get the pin here. Great stuff to shake off the weirdness of the last hour or so.
Match 3: The REP (Nate Carter & Dave McCall) vs Thick & Juicy (Faye Jackson & Willow Nightingale)
I love this matchup. Faye is flirty with Carter and he’s shook and just wants to wrestle. He tries to play wingman for the ref but he ain’t having it. Nate hits a few shoulder blocks but Faye blocks him off with her rear. Nate wants out but Faye won’t let him tag Dave McCall. Willow in and a double-cake smash to Carter’s head. McCall helps Carter escape. McCall eats a superkick from Willow but a big back suplex gets him a near fall. The Rep gets rolling with the tandem work but Carter isn’t feeling so good about hitting his opponents. Faye keeping him off his game with very obvious invites to her corner. McCall with chest kicks to Nightingale for another near fall. Carter is easily distracted by Jackson, allowing Nightingale to get some shots in but he hits a fallaway slam for several two counts. Faye back in and catches Carter with an Earthquake style senton in the corner. McCall cuts her follow up off with a flying knee. Thick & Juicy with a double spinning head scissors and corner cannonballs for a near double pin. Slam from Faye and Willow wants a moonsault but Carter breaks it up. He powerbombs Willow off the top onto Faye. The Rep double up on Faye with a pop-up flatliner for the pin.
Winners: The Rep
Hell yeah. This was a LOT of fun. Good action as Carter had to overcome some fun distractions to get into “match mode”.
Match 4: “The Truth” AJ Gray vs “Hoodfoot” Mo Atlas
This should be a war between two decorated strikers. Both guys working the graps early, testing each other’s strength. Gray turns up the heat and hits a huge powerslam for two. Commentary making sure to put over Hoodfoot’s accolades in Paradigm Pro and his status as UWFI Heavy Hitters champion. Hoodfoot shakes Gray with a shoulder block and a falling lariat for two. Hoodfoot talking trash and that motivates Gray into a series of loud leg kicks. Gray slammed and Hoodfoot goes to the top??? Gray cuts it off and superplexes him off. That was a SCARY landing for Atlas. Both guys struggle to their feet, Gray fires up with some double axe handles and a spinning heel kick. Hoodfoot with a german and going back to the top....and hits a splash from the top.....Gray kicks out! Gray catches Hoodfoot running with a spinebuster. Gray gets Hoodfoot up for a sit out powerbomb. Two count! Hoodfoot with a corner splash and a double choke bomb for two. Gray fires up with an enziguri & a brainbuster but Hoodfoot out at two. Striking to their feet. Gray wants the lariat but he’s sent out. Hoodfoot with a suicide dive! Gray tries the lariat but Hoodfoot slips under it. German and a lariat to the back of head from Atlas for another near fall! Hoodfoot wants to put him away but Gray finally hits the lariat. Gray to the top and crushes a crossbody as Hoodfoot tries to sit up. 1, 2, 3.
Winner: AJ Gray
Wow. Holy Hoss Fight, Batman! This was a Good G**damn Match™. That’s all I need to say. Go back and watch this clash of the titans. Just...Damn.
Main Event: Lee Moriarty vs Saieve Al Sabah vs Ken Broadway
The winner of this match will be the number 1 contender for the Pan-Afrikan Diaspora Championship held by Trish Adora. This is a heck of a group to fight for that spot. Hot to death start as all three guys are trading high spot after high spot. Multiple highlights into multiple pin attempts. Broadway with a Mario-like “yahoo” after a springboard to Moriarty. Sabah with jumping face kick to Broadway. Slingshot clothesline from Moriarty. All three to the top and Sabah with a double superplex and a kip up into a double moonsault for a near fall. Lee leapfrogs Broadway into a X-factor on Sabah. Lee going into an octopus stretch but Broadway powers into a backbreaker. Step-up backstabber for two. Broadway sends Sabah to the outside, into the post, on a dropkick....suicide dive to follow. Lee ain’t one to hold back and springboards out to them. La Mistica to Broadway looks deep but Sabah breaks it up. Sabah with a variant on the Paige Turner. Broadway with a Michanoku driver. Everyone is down and tired. They’ve done a LOT in the last few minutes. Struggling to their feet, we have a 3-way strike battle. Ref bump in the corner, Sabah with a low blow to Lee. Broadway with a german to Lee but the ref is distracted. Broadway comes to get the ref but Sabah shoves him back and hits a tumbleweed for the pin.
Winner (and #1 Contender): Saieve Al Sabah
And that’s it for “For the Culture”! Look, tech issues affected the start time and first match. I feel for the team but they powered through to make the show work and slowly pull the schedule back into shape. The work itself was off the charts though. Go back and watch this. This was fantastic. “The Death Hour” is up next. Bring on the blood. Until then!
