Gunther defends the World Heavyweight Title against Randy Orton.
This should be a hell of a lot of fun. I love these five match shows. Less is more when it all matters.
Big pops for both guys. Ludwig Kaiser did the intro for the champ.
They are starting off slowly.
The fans are doing the wave for some reason. Orton played along and the fans loved it. After that, Gunther went to work on Orton.
Gunther does things that I have never seen anyone do. His creativity is so much fun to watch.
On the floor, Randy tossed Gunther into the steps and turned the tide. He threw Gunther into the steps and wiped them out. He then dropped the champ back first on the table twice. Then a third time. Charles Robinson is being lenient with the count. A fourth time on his table.
Gunther is selling his arm after being beaten up by Randy. Orton is laying it on.
Randy is ragdolling the champ. Gunther keeps kicking out but he wasn't getting anything in until he hit a kick. His comeback didn't last long as Randy got a two with a powerslam.
This match has been all Randy as Gunther is selling the right arm. Randy hit a Superplex. They both sold it, which gave Gunther a little time to recover. He is selling the right arm big time.
Randy hit the DDT off the ropes but didn't cover. The fans chanted RKO and Gunther didn't move.
Gunther got up and blocked the RKO with a suplex. When Randy got up he ate a dropkick. Gunther hit a splash and got a two.
The fans are chanting that it's awesome. It's really old school, in a great way. Selling. Spots matter. It has it all.
Gunther got Randy up got the powerbomb but the arm gave out. He went for the powerbomb and couldn't get it. But finally, he did and got a two. See, that's how it's done. When people do everything, nothing matters. When you show me how hard it is to do, it really matters when it happens.
They are also telling the story of how Gunther worked his way through the injury, again SELLING! It matters.
Then Randy hit the RKO out of nowhere for a two. Randy can't believe that the champ kicked out.
Randy went to the floor to work on the tables but Guther came to join him. Randy backdropped him on the steps. They are both selling the toll of the match. The fans are chanting Randy. And now some are chanting for Gunther as well.
Randy is working Gunther out on the steps. The fans are split. Charles Robinson is counting VERY slowly as Randy dumped Gunther through the German announce table. Robinson came out to check on Gunther. The count should be at about 800 by now. Cole even noted that the fans are here to see a finish so he is being lenient. See, that's what you do, don't just ignore it.
Randy finally got Gunther back in the ring. He's taking it all in from the fans before he got in position. RKO but blocked and Gunther locked on a Sleeper.
Orton stood up and tried to get out. He did a roll but Gunther held on. Rany got back up and grabbed the bad arm. He tried to get an RKO but Gunther blocked it and locked on the Sleeper again. He threw some elbows on him and locked it on again. Randy stood up and dropped backward breaking, it, but the champ locked it back on and choked out Randy. You winner and still champion, Gunther!
Gunther put his belt on. He waited for Orton to get up. He offered his hand to Orton and Randy shook it. That was awesome. They went to war and showed mutual respect. It gave nice depth to Gunther's character as he showed that he respected Randy. Very cool.
This match was freakin' awesome. In some ways a lot like Punk and Drew and in other ways so much different. It was such a great, old school type match where Gunther took a beating, adjusted and then choked out a legend. Gunther is a different type of animal.
After Randy left, Gunther stayed in the ring. Ludwig Kaiser came out and gave him props. Cathy Kelley came in and he told them thanks in German. That's all I understood.
He then left the ring and got on the announce table to soak it all in.
Every match on the show was at least very good but this one and Punk-Drew were next level great.
