Cody Rhodes defends his WWE Title against AJ Styles.
Main event time. This crowd has been treated to a great show far, and we have been treated to their great reactions.
The crowd is ready, they are singing to AJ. I have a feeling that they will be singing a different tune in a minute. The la la la la la la tune is catchy though.
They blew up just for Cody's song beginning. And yeah, they are singing for sure. This crowd is awesome.
Just imagine if some different decisions were made and Cody, Jade and Punk were all still at their former home. My, what a different landscape we could be looking at for AEW. WWE would still be great because they have the best booker around, but man, those three huge pieces for Tony Khan to let get away.
AJ doesn't like the song they are singing. Corey says the song is about the word Phenomenal. AJ should like it, it's cool.
The crowd joined Samatha in the intro to Cody. It was awesome.
Jessika Carr is our ref, the first woman to ref a World Title main event. That's awesome. Here we go.
I will say it again, this crowd is great. I don't do all time bests and all but man, they have to be in the conservation. The crowd is doing dueling Cody/AJ chants. Very cool.
They are fired up early and taking it slow. They will build up. AJ hit a big spot and the crowd sang his song. They like singing that song. I don't blame them. It seems fun.
They have moved to the floor where AJ is clearing the French announce table. Cody blocked that by ramming AJ into the steps.
Cody had AJ up from a slam from the turnbuckle but lost him. He is selling the back. AJ went for a moonsault but Cody got the knees up. Now they are both selling injuries. It's been slow up to this point.
AJ just dumped Cody back first on the apron. Ouch. AJ went to get him but Cody grabbed him and dumped him through the French announce table. They are both down on the floor. Carr is counting and the crowd is joining her. They beat the 10 count at the last second.
Now they are throwing hands and kicks. It's heating up. Cody got a two with a bionic elbow. AJ came back with a snap suplex into the turnbuckle to keep working on the back. AJ got a two with the springboard 450. Cody is fighting. AJ hit a Burning Hammer and Cody kicked out at 1. He's fired up now. He hit the Cutter for a two! Yeah we are heating up now.
The fans are chanting Fight Forever. Please don't angry tweet Tony Khan. They are just fans.
AJ came off the ropes with the Forearm but Cody got him with a kick. Cody locked in the Kimura. AJ got out but Cody hit the Cutter from the top. Cody is firing up. This match is more about story and selling than a lot of moves and that's fine by me. Crossroads, 1-2-3. Cody retains.
As I said earlier, it started slow, by design, and then built to a nice crescendo. WIth all of the high octane stuff earlier on the show, this was a more traditional Title defense. It was a strong, old school match to end the show.
This was one hell of a show, from top to bottom, with one of the all time great crowds.
