JAY LETHAL VS. CODY, LADDER WAR, NEW CHAMPIONS CROWNED & MORE: COMPLETE RING OF HONOR FINAL BATTLE COVERAGE FROM NYC

By Mike Johnson on 2018-12-14 19:00:00

Jonathan Gresham vs. the debuting Zack Sabre Jr.

Nice reaction for Gresham.  Big reaction for Zack.

They faced off and circled each other.  Gresham took Zack to the mat, but Zack reversed it and they went back and forth with reversals before returning to their feet and shoving each other.  Zack began working over Gresham’s arms and tied him up on the mat.

Gresham reversed and tried working over Zack’s legs.  They went back and forth grappling and reversing each other’s holds.  It was great, smooth mat wrestling.  Sabre locked in a headscissor and controlled Gresham, who finally escaped and gave him the finger.  That didn’t sit well with Zack and tempers began to flare.

Zack fired at Gresham with a big forearm.  Gresham went to lock up but was nailed with a big backhanded strike.  Gresham gained control and worked over Zack’s legs.   Gresham tied up Sabre on the mat.  Sabre fired back with kicks.    He fought his way back to his feet and trapped Gresham in an abdominal stretch.  Gresham escaped and reversed but Sabre reversed as well, and they went in circles trying to get the advantage.

Sabre went for a La Magistral and they rolled around the mat, ending up in the ropes.    The began striking the hell out of each other with strikes. Gresham nailed a back Suplex with a bridge for a close two count.  He cinched in a single-leg Maple Leaf, trying to force a submission.

Gresham locked on an Octopus on Sabre, who escaped and locked on a reverse anklelock.  Gresham escaped and cinched in one of his own.  For technical wrestling, this is off the charts great.  Sabre went for a punt kick, but Gresham caught it.  Sabre nailed some kicks.  Gresham nailed a moonsault and a double stomp on his arm.

Gresham went for a Backlund Bridge, but Sabre blocked it, drilled him and nailed one of his own for the pin.

Your winner, Zack Sabre Jr.!

That was some damn great wrestling!  Really phenomenal mix of striking, submissions and grappling.

Matt Taven vs. Dalton Castle.

The Hammerstein booed the hell out of Taven when he was announced as the real ROH World Champion.

There were back and forth chants for each man before the bell.  That led to a huge Dalton Castle chant.  Taven declared this was a title bout.

They went right after each other with slaps and locked and ended up going through the ropes to the floor.  They slugged it out on the floor.  They returned to the ring and kept trying to nail each other with right hands but kept ducking the other.  Castle finally preened in the ring, with the crowd loving it.

Taven went to slam Castle, who avoided it. Castle was knocked off the apron but caught and saved the Boys.  Castle took down Taven and worked him over with right hands.   Castle went for a charging knee but Taven moved and Castle crashed and burned over the top to the floor.  Taven nailed a kick through the ropes and hit a dive series of dives.  On the second, he missed Castle and slammed his neck and the back of his head on the railing.  It looked EVIL.

Castle came off the apron, drilling Taven with a knee.  Castle tossed Taven into the steps leading up to the stage.  He brought Taven back to the ring, where Taven regained control and nailed an over the knees backbreaker for a two count.  Taven began focusing on attacking Castle’s bad back, dropping knees across it.

Taven continued the assault, nailing several strikes and a big DDT for a two count.  Castle made a comeback but TK O’Ryan nailed him.  The Boys nailed O’Ryan but red balloons came from under the ring and they were attacked by Vinnie Marseglia, who hit a double inverted DDT on them on the floor, then dragged them underneath.

Taven wiped out Castle with a big clothesline but he kicked up, shocking Taven.  Taven worked him over but was hit with a dropkick when he went to the top rope.  Castle charged across the apron and kicked him off the buckles to the floor.   Castle went to toss him into the ring but Taven reversed.  Castle nailed a rana on the floor.

Back in the ring, Castle nailed a powerbomb but O’Ryan tossed one of the Boys into the ring, where he crashed into Castle, breaking up the pinfall.   O’Ryan was ejected from ringside.  The battle continued in the ring with Castle nailing a leaping knee in the corner and hitting the Batarang but Taven grabbed the ropes.

Taven rebounded with a big running knee and nailed the One Percenter for the pin.

Your winner, Matt Taven!

A really damn entertaining match with lots of twists and turns and shenanigans.

Marty Scurll vs. Chris Daniels.

They went nose to nose jawing at the bell.  Scurll shoulderblocked him down for a two count  Daniels grabbed a side headlock but was sent into the ropes and returned the shoulderblock from earlier.  Daniels controlled him, working over his arm.  Scurll reversed and went for Daniels’ fingers but he recognized that and protected his hand.

Daniels gained control of Scurll’s arm but was backed into the corner and nailed several back elbows.  Daniels drilled him in the chest with a series of chops.  Scurll nailed several forearms.   He went for a superplex on the apron but Daniels evaded and Daniels nailed the Arabian Press off the ropes to the floor.

Scurll regained control and nailed a catapult under the ropes, snapping Daniels’ throat.  Daniels was worked over for a long time and whipped hard into the buckles.  Daniel finally slipped under Scurll’s legs and nailed a right hand.  He clotheslined Scurll, then slammed him and nailed an elbow for a two count.

Daniels grabbed Scurll’s fingers, teasing he was going to snap them but Scurll escaped and began nailing several superkicks and a discus forearm smash.  They went back and forth with several attempts and reversals.   Scurll went for a chikenwing but Daniels escaped and nailed an inverted DVDR.

Daniels went for Angel’s wings but Scurll reversed and went for an Alabama Slam.  Daniels grabbed the ropes to escape.  Marty went for the chicken wing again.  Daniels tried to evade it but Scurll got his hand and snapped Daniels’ fingers.  Scurll rolled him up and used the ropes for a two count.

Daniels nailed Angel’s Wings and scored a two count.  They continued to go back and forth.  Scurll nailed several forearms and drilled Daniels with a twisting Angel’s Wings into a faceplant.  Scurll began stomping the hell out of Daniels.   Scurll locked in the chicken wing and finally forced Daniels to submit.

Your winner, Marty Scurll!

The storyline is that if Daniels didn’t win and get Scurll’s future title shot, he was done with the company as Joe Koff wasn’t signing him.  Daniels’ deal is up at the end of the year, so this is likely the end for him here, at least for now.

Daniels got a big reaction from the fans after he recovered.  They chanted, “Thank you Daniels.”  He climbed the ropes to salute the fans but Bully Ray ran out and lowblowed him, then shoved him off the ropes to the floor.
