CODY VS. ALDIS 2, JAZZ VS. PENELOPE FORD, NEW NATIONAL CHAMP CROWNED AND MORE: COMPLETE NWA 70 COVERAGE FROM NASHVILLE, TN

By Mike Johnson on 2018-10-21 18:44:00

Jenn Decker interviewed former NWA Champion Dory Funk Jr.  She called him Rory Funk Jr.  Whoops.  Funk said it's amazing to be here as part of the NWA and the people who have backed the NWA, the fans.  He said they restarted his career.  Funk said he would like to thank the promotion, Billy Corgan and everyone who was involved in the 70th Anniversary.  He said he was exposed to the NWA when he was 7 years old in 1948.  He's been a part of it ever since.  His father was part of the first Board of Directors with Sam Muchnick and he's been involved in wrestling for 50 years and it's been a fabulous trip and thanked everyone.  Nice "Dory" chant after the promo.  Dory cracked a whip at ringside.

Tony Schiavone joined Jim Cornette and Joe Galli.  They noted it was the first time in 27 years Jim and Tony had called a match together.

They brought out the former NWA Champions in attendance.

Billy Corgan is sitting ringside.

NWA Champion Cody with Brandi Rhodes vs. Nick Aldis with Camille.

They have the Hebner working different falls.  That sounds like an angle waiting to happen.

Aldis' insurance policy was announced by the ring announcer as Kamille.  Jim Cornette and Joe Galli called her Kamilla Kane.

FALL ONE:

They went back and forth with a feeling out period.    Cody backed Aldis into the corner and faced off with Aldis.  Cody went to the floor, where Kamille stepped up to him.  He returned to the ring, where he engaged in a test of strength with Aldis.  Cody scored several near falls, including one after a Flatliner off the ropes but Aldis took control and worked him over.  Aldis nailed a sliding kick, sending Cody to the floor.  Brandi Rhodes came over but Kamille stepped to her and they have a face-off.

Aldis began working over Cody's lower back when he returned to the ring.  Aldis maintained the pace of the match, working over Cody.  Aldis locked on a bow and arrow.  Aldis continued to drill Cody with forearms but was caught with a powerslam for a two count.  Cody nailed the Disaster Kick off the ropes for a two count.   Cody locked on a figure four leglock while countering Aldis.  Aldis made it the ropes.  Cody went for another Disaster Kick but was caught and locked in the Texas Cloverleaf.  Cody realized he couldn't make it to the ropes and immediately tapped, trying to save himself for later.

WINNER OF FALL ONE: NICK ALDIS.

FALL TWO:

Cody was ready to go but Aldis made him wait out the clock.  Aldis was selling that his knee was bothering him from the figure four and immediately went to the floor to make him wait.  He sipped a cup of water, only to walk into a Cody tope into the entrance way.  Cody smashed him into the barricade.  They battled through the crowd and to the broadcast table.  Cornette said Earl Hebner had ruled he was going to give them leeway and not DQ anyone.  Cody was run into the ring wall of the venue.  Cody nailed Aldis with a trash can.  Cody nailed a superkick.  They brawled into the concession stand.  Schiavone joked it wasn't even Tupelo.  Cornette asked where Guy Coffey (an old Memphis promoter) was when you needed him.  They then battled up to the bleachers and back to the floor.  Big Cody chant.  They finally fought back towards the ringside area.

They battled to the entrance ramp where Aldis slammed Cody.  Aldis began bringing Cody to the ring, but Cody knocked him into the ringpost.  Cody grabbed a chair, then instead brought a table into the ring.   Cody set up a table in the corner.  Tim Storm came down to ringside, trying to calm Cody, who instead drilled him with a right hand.  Are they trying to tease a Cody turn?  Aldis caught him with a DDT for a two count.  The fans chanted for Cody.  Aldis prepared to spear Cody through a table but Brandi got in the way.  Kamille challenged her in the ring.  Cody got between them to move Brandi away buty was nailed with a running knee by Aldis.  Hebner moved the table out of the ring, which the crowd booed.

Aldis set the table up outside near the entrance ramp.  Adis went to the top with an elbow through the table but Cody moved and Aldis crashed through the table to the floor. Cody nailed CrossRhodes and scored the pin, evening it up.

WINNER OF FALL TWO: CODY

FALL THREE:

Cody superkicked him and went for CrossRhodes but Aldis escaped.  Cody missed a moonsault off the ropes.  The crowd chanted for Cody.  They battled back and forth with punches until both went down.  Brandi was trying to check on Cody but Kamille pulled her to the floor.   Brandi jumped on her and tried to lock on a rear naked choke.  Brian Hebner kicked everyone out from ringside, including the former Champions.  In the midst of all that, Aldis nailed a CrossRhodes on Cody for a two count.

Cody locked on the Texas Cloverleaf but Aldis made it to the ropes.  Cody nailed a hangman's neckbreaker for a two count.  Aldis snatched Cody in a tombstone piledriver and went to the top with a flying elbow for a close two count.  Cody and Aldis traded near falls, including Cody nailing a clothesline for a near fall.    They battled back and forth with right hands.  Aldis nailed a big lariat, sending Cody inside out.  Aldis went for the Texas Cloverleaf but when Cody kicked him off, his boot came off.  Cody went for a small package but Aldis reversed it and scored the pin.

FALL THREE WINNER: Nick Aldis

Your winner and NWA Champion Nick Aldis!

Cody was shocked and quietly walked to the back.  Aldis, exhausted, finally got to his feet and had his hands raised.  Kamille joined him as he wrapped the NWA title around his waist.

The announcers signed off with Cornette hoping he and Tony get to do it again in 27 years.

Well, that was a surprise.  A worthy, back and forth main event.

The show will likely go down as one that live, was a lot of fun but production issues totally stalled the momentum and flow of the show.
