6/29 THIS DAY IN HISTORY: STAN HANSEN WALKS OUT OF THE AWA..AND TAKES THEIR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BELT WITH HIM

By Mike Johnson on 2023-06-29 08:00:00

June 29th

On this day in history in ....

1973 - Kim Sung Ho defeats Alfonso Dantes for the EMLL NWA Light Heavyweight Title in Mexico City, Mexico.

1986 - The AWA announces that since World Champion Stan Hansen refused to wrestle Nick Bockwinkel in Denver, Colorado, Hansen was being stripped of the title and Bockwinkel was named the new champion.  In truth, Hansen had already been booked to defend the AWA World Title on All Japan Pro-Wrestling shows in July. When Hansen was told to drop the title beforehand, he refused, since his loyalty was to All Japan and Giant Baba, and he knew that Baba was advertising a AWA title defense on the July tour.  Hansen went to Japan, still in possession of the AWA Title belt (a new belt was made for Bockwinkel) and "defended" it, dropping the belt after he won the NWA International Title (an All Japan belt) from Jumbo Tsuruta.  Hansen would run over the AWA Title belt with his truck and mail the bent remains to Verne Gagne.  Bockwinkel would take the mangled belt and had it restored.

1992 - Tom Prichard defeats Brian Christopher for the USWA Southern Heavyweight Title in Memphis, Tennessee to win the title that had been vacated a week earlier when a match between the two ended in a no-contest. This began Pritchard's fifth title reign.  On the same show, Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett defeated The Moondogs (Spot & Spike) to win the USWA Tag Team Title.

1998 - Steve Austin defeats Kane for the WWF World Heavyweight Title in Cleveland, Ohio, ending Kane's reign after less than 24 hours.  This begins Austin's second WWF World title reign.

1999 - The Hardy Boyz defeat Faarooq & Bradshaw for the WWF World Tag Team Title in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  This was the first of an eventual five runs with the belts for Matt & Jeff Hardy.

2002 - Phoenix Championship Wrestling ran Toms River, NJ.  Eric McHugh filed the following results:

Precious Metal defeated Matrix

Slayer and Ozzy won over Dicky Benz and Lil' Ricky

Chi Chi Cruz defeated Lil' Ricky

Matt Vandal w/ Alexis Laree defeated Tim Arson

White Lotus defeated Donnie Bon Jovi

Powerchild Eric Justice defeated Dr. Hennesy

United Nations (Tiger Kahn & The Profit) defeated Jumbo Joe Gunns and PCW Commissioner Dr. Hurtz

Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Julio Dinero w/Kara

2002 - 3PW ran Philadelpha, PA with the following results:

-Christian York defeated Chris Chetti.

-Tod Gordon introduced his new find, Annihilation ( a 7 foot monster) who ended up chokeslamming Philadelphia Daily News columnist, MadDog Tearson.

-Josh Daniels over Rob Eckos.

-Dylan Knight and Candi over Blue Meanie and Jasmine St Clair which meant that Jasmine got 10 lashes on the buttocks w/ a cat o nine tails.

-Pierce St John and Shawn Donovan went to a no contest after Tod Gordon brought Annihilation out to the ring to chokeslam them both.

-The Public Enemy and Bad Breed went to a double pin in a match reminisicant of old ECW that saw the ring fill with chairs and during the match Ian Rotten had dollar bills stapled to his face.

-Joey Matthews over Murder One (who was introduced as being from the New Jack Wrestling Academy). After the match Bill Wiles ( Bilvis Wesley) tried to help Matthews and ended up getting his head shaved.

-PitBull Gary Wolfe wins over Devon Storm.

-New Jack gets the win over the Rockin Rebel.

-Sabu got the win on the Sandman after Bill Alfonso turned on Sandman and all three (Gordon, Sabu and Fonsie) beat on Sandman post match, then the locker room emptied for a nice brawl around the building.

2002 - WWE ran Madison Square Garden in NYC with the following results, filed by the late, great Georgie Makropoulos:

Steven Regal and Chris Nowinski defeated Bubba Ray & Spike Dudley

D-Lo Brown defeated Justin Credible

Molly Holly defeated Trish

Bradshaw vs. Shawn Stasiak.  Steve Richards and Spike Dudley interfered.  Richards got the belt but Bradshaw won it back quickly

Matt Hardy defeated Raven (Brock beat up on Matt)

Best match of the night was Rob Van Dam defeating Eddie Guerrero in a Ladder Match.

Brock Lesnar over Ric Flair

Stevie Richards defeated Tommy Dreamer

Booker T and Goldbust defeated Big Show and X-Pac

Untertaker defeated Hulk Hogan.  Vince McMahon interfered.  Hogan came out to his nWo music.

Standing in the back watching were Shane McMahon, Sgt. Slaughter, Arn Anderson and Arnie Skaaland and Betty Skaaland.

The arena was nowhere near a sell out, all the top was empty.

Hogan threw out his T-Shirt and Bandana. The T-shirt was given to a disabled child in the front and the bandana was given to Joe Sorrentino's grand child. Made two kids EXTREMELY happy.

2002 - WWE's Smackdown brand ran Providence, Rhode Island.    Daniel McArdle filed the following report:

Daniel McArdle sent this report

I attended the WWE house show tonight in Providence, Rhode Island at the Dunkin Donuts Center featuring the Smackdown! brand. The following is a report from the show:

1st match: John Cena vs. Albert

As soon as Cena makes his entrance, I heard people around me saying, "Who is that?" I guess some of these people didn't watch Smackdown! this past Thursday, but hey it was their loss. Anyway this match starts off with Cena getting in some nice offense, but soon after Albert counters and begins demonstrating his strength to the crowd. Nothing extraordinary about this match. Finish comes soon after Cena kicks out of the Baldo bomb. Cena is in the corner and Albert attempts to run and splash him, but Cena moves out of the way and Albert hits the turnbuckle, Cena rolls him up for the 3 count. I enjoyed this match and feel that Cena is well on his way to making it big in the WWE in the future.

Winner: John Cena

2nd match: Mark Henry & Funaki vs. Christian & Lance Storm

The Canadians are introduced first and come out to a chorus of boos. USA chant starts when Storm comes out. Christian then cuts a promo on Providence, saying how ignorant we are and complains about us chanting "Canada sucks!" As Henry and Storm start the match, Funaki gets yet another USA chant going. Kind of ironic that this match as billed as "USA vs. Canada," and Funaki is representing the USA. That's strange you say? INDEED! Anyway Henry dominates early on displaying his strength, after all he is the world's strongest man! Funaki gets in and Team Canada begins to take control with double team tactics. Eventually Funaki makes the hot tag to Henry, and he dominates yet again, until Henry attempts to gorilla press slam Storm, and Christian hits a low blow from behind, allowing Storm to land on his feet from the attempted slam and deliver a superkick, and Christian catches Henry in a roll up from behind for the 1-2-3. So finally the Canadians don't get screwed and end up getting the win. Good match overall.

Winners: Christian & Storm

3rd match: Hurricane vs. Jamie Noble w/Nidia for WWE Cruiserweight Championship

Bell rings but Noble feels he needs a good luck kiss from his girl Nidia, and hey if I was him I would want some good luck too : ) Hurricane goes for the chokeslam early on, but Noble counters with shots to the head and from there on for most of the match Noble gets in the offense with occasional reversals by the Hurricane. Helms does get in his patented neckbreakers, including one from the top rope to Noble which resembles the Buff Blockbuster. The match ends when Hurricane goes for a suplex from the inside on the apron, but Noble counters and falls on top of Hurricane in a cross body, then Nidia holds Helms' leg as Noble gets the 3. About the same as their match this past Sunday, but I still enjoyed it. After the match Nidia distracts Hurricane so Noble can hit him form behind, but Noble runs into Nidia and Helms turns around Noble to deliver the chokeslam to end on a good note.

Winner: Jamie Noble

4th match: Big Valbowski & Hardcore Holly vs. Billy & Chuck w/Rico for the WWE Tag Team Championship

As the match starts, Billy appears nervous and needs Chuck to rub his shoulders to comfort him. I guess there is nothing wrong with being nervous and needing some consolation, after all he is starting the match out with Hardcore Holly! This is a basic back and forth match, similar to the match we saw this past week on Smackdown!. Finish comes when Holly has Billy up on his shoulders for the Alabama Slam, but Chuck superkicks Holly and Billy slides down Holly's back into a near sunset flip and gets the pinfall victory.

Winners: Billy & Chuck

5th match: Billy Kidman & Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero & Tajiri

Small ECW chant at the start of the match when Tajiri and Rey are in the ring. Some nice highspots in this match, but some unique and hard to describe. If you have seen Mysterio before you know what to expect. Some stiff kicks by Tajiri which echoed through the arena, always love seeing and hearing those. The match ends when Tajiri is isolated on the outside, and Chavo is sitting on the top rope. Rey runs towards Kidman, and Rey leaps into the air as Kidman vaults him up towards the prone Chavo, and Rey catches Chavo with his legs and hits the top rope huracanrana and gets the 1-2-3. Sweet match and great to see Rey in action, can't wait for him to debut on WWE television soon.

Winners: Kidman & Rey Mysterio

6th match: Hugh Morris & Steve Bradley vs. Reverend D-Von w/Deacon Batista & Rob Conway

D-von cuts a promo saying how everyone in the audience is a sinner and fornicator and says he can save us, but says we aren't worth saving, and then proceeds to get even more heel heat by telling us how unsuccessful all our sports teams were. Testify! Match starts with back and forth action, a lot of counters and double teaming when the ref was busy with the opponent's partner. Funny when the ref was distracted with Morrus in his corner, D-von slaps his own hand and comes in the ring. Guess the refs are a lot more lenient with letting the heels get away with tags, or lack there of, then the faces. Anyway the end of the match comes when the ref has his back turned and D-von sends Bradley into the ropes as the Deacon climbs the apron and clocks him with the donation box and D-von pins Bradley for the 3 count.

Winners: D-Von & Rob Conway

7th match: Rikishi vs. Test

Rikishi comes out without his gear on, and right away I know that he has an excuse that will result in him not wrestling tonight, but I also knew whatever he did would be entertaining nonetheless. He claims that his baggage was lost at the airport and he didn't have gear to wrestle in. Test's music hits and he comes down to interrupt Rikishi. He says that since Rikishi doesn't have his gear that maybe one of the fans would lend him their g-strings, and points out specific overweight fans as examples. Funny stuff. Storm and Christian come from the back to try to take out Rikishi, but the big man takes all 3 of them on. Rikishi eventually throws Test and Christian out of the ring and gives Storm a stink face as his fellow Canadians just watch in disgust. Rikishi then teases us by grabbing the ref as he is about to go outside the ring, and pulls him back in so they can dance. But Test comes back out to the ring to try to get some of Rikishi. Of course it's to no avail as Test is backed into a corner and has Rikishi's rear stuck in his face. Finally now the ref and Rikishi can dance, and it was to a huge pop from the crowd, one of the biggest of the night.

8th match: Torrie Wilson vs. Stacy Keibler in a Bra & Panties Match

Not much of a match, but that was not to be expected anyway. We all know this was just for some T & A, but I don't think any of the guys in the audience cared about wrestling when women were being stripped to their bra and panties! Torrie loses her shirt, then Stacy loses hers. Stacy gets Torrie in the rollup and Torrie counters into one of her own, and pulls her pants down for the win. Nothing unique about the finish, but damn it was nice to see them both wearing their undergarments!

Main event: Edge vs. Kurt Angle

I believe this is Edge's first match back since his 2 or 3 week hiatus, not that it will affect him at all because I expected him to be just as good as before, and it appeared his shoulder was not bothering him at all, which was a good sign. This was a typical Edge and Angle matchup with their normal spots. A few minutes into the match Edge hits the Edge-ecution on Angle, but Angle kicks out after 2. Angle comes back soon after and hits his big belly to belly suplex off the top rope which I always love to see. The end of the match comes after Edge jumps out of the attempted Angle Slam by Kurt, and he runs to the ropes and bounces back with a spear for the pin. After the match Angle gets on the mic and says to his fans he is alright, a little dizzy but will still be able to compete in his title match next week on Smackdown. He says he feels like his balls are in his throat, and that many of the guy fans in attendance know what that feeling is like. All I can say is ouch! He also says that these fans would know what it is like to be bald and not able to grow any of their hair back. The fans respond to everything he says with a "What?" chant. I thought we were finally rid of that, but I guess not. Kurt begins yelling at the fans how is sick of that chant and that Austin is not even with the company anymore. He then continues about how he made Hogan tap out at the King of the Ring and now he is our American hero. Good match, and the promo afterwards was classic.

Winner: Edge

Notes from the show:

The show was nowhere near sold out, and pretty much the entire upper section was empty, and even the lower tier was not completely full. Dunkin Donuts Center holds maybe 10,000 people, and the WWE would have been lucky to draw around 4000 people. Not a good sign, but also they have to include the fact there was no Rock, Hogan, Triple H, or Jericho there. It was known they would not be present, but still they can't expect to get very good attendance with 4 of their tops stars not at the event, but regardless I enjoyed the show very much and was pleased with how hard all the wrestlers worked tonight.

Biggest Heat:
1. Angle's promo after main event
2. Christian's promo
3. Billy & Chuck
4. D-Von's promo
5. Albert

Biggest pops:
1.Edge
2. Rikishi
3. Bra and Panties match
4. Rey Mysterio
5. The Hurricane

2002 - WWE aired Confidential.  John Keane filed the following TV report:

Confidential Report for 6/29/2002.
Recorded at the WWE TV Studios in Stamford, CT.
Your Host: Mean Gene Okerlund.

Gene goes straight to work-he discusses the difficulty of performing in front of a live audience, especially when dealing with an injury. This leads into our first major subject of the evening-tonight, we'll be going in-depth with Kurt Angle and Shane McMahon (the latter making his first WWE TV appearance since the demise of the WCW/ECW Alliance) on their 'street fight' match at last year's King of the Ring.

Gene reminds us of Shane's predilection for suicidal high-spots in big matches. Kurt and Shane discuss the build-up to the match-earlier in the PPV, Shane's interference cost Kurt his shot at becoming a 2-time KOTR.

(Commentary-looks like we're sticking to kayfabe tonight, at least early on. Oh well.)

Shane describes getting the hell beaten out of him during the in-ring portion of the match. Later on, the match went outside-Kurt had Shane set for a suplex, Shane countered with one of his own. Kurt took a bad fall on the cement floor, injuring his tailbone. Kurt felt his tailbone was broken and was unable to catch his breath. Shane praises Kurt for continuing the match.

Later on, the 2 were set for the match's big spot-Kurt was to score a belly-to-belly suplex, sending Shane through a pane of glass. Due to his injury, it took Kurt 3 tries to get Shane through the glass. Despite both being WAY the worse for wear, Shane insisted on going through with the next move-another suplex through glass. Kurt went for it-no luck. He finally simply tossed Shane through the glass. Shane describes feeling happy as he lay on the shards-happy to not be moving. Didn't last long, both felt they had more to deliver. Kurt describes this match as 'the best he's ever had'. The end saw Kurt carting Shane back to the ring and laying into him with a large plywood board. Kurt then set the board in the corner atop the ropes. As both were standing on the rickety platform, Kurt hit Shane with the Angle Slam and got the win.

Shane and Kurt issue the highest of praise for each others efforts. Break.

WWE Rewind: From April 29th, 2001: The Backlash PPV. Shane sends The Big Show through a table with a leap off the top of the Titantron.

Gene returns to present us a 'Before They Were Superstars' segment on William Regal. We see the place where our current European Champion got his start in the biz-an amusement park in Blackpool, England. William talks about coming to the park in 1975 when he was 7. Back then, costumed wrestlers challenged park attendees to impromptu 'matches'. William describes being enthralled as a spectator. In 1983, he returned as a participant-and got the hell beaten out of him. He kept coming back though, and in 1984 left school and 'joined up'. We get a glimpse of William's early days on the mic (even then he was gold). He talks about his early days in the ring facing volunteers from the crowd, many of whom were drunk. William takes us on a tour of Blackpool-he points out that nearly every building in the city was used as a wrestling venue at one time or another. William talks about fulfilling a lifelong dream at the age of 18-wrestling in the Blackpool Tower Circus. He describes that venue as his all-time favorite workplace.

William ends his segment by thanking WWE for the chance to live his dream. Break.

Back, Gene takes us behind the scenes on the recent Stacker 2 commercials featuring WWE and NASCAR stars. Premise of the first was NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace bringing some of his pals to the Trax training facility-to get their butts kicked by Tough Enough 2 trainers Al Snow, Bob Holly and Ivory. Second one saw Kenny getting his butt kicked by the TE2 crew as his buds looked on. Al feels the NASCAR cats should keep out of the ring and stick to what they do best-making left turns. Break.

Back, Gene sends us back in time to the days of 'The Rock n' Sock Connection' (the tag-team of The Rock and Mankind). We get a replay of what is officially the highest rated segment in the history of Raw-from September 27th, 1999: 'Rock, This Is Your Life'.

Okay, just a quick overview-you're familiar with this segment, right? Anyway, Mankind arranged for an in-ring celebration for his pal Rocky. As Mankind declares 'This is your Life!' the camera pans back-Pop-Up video style, a dialog box appears, pointing to where a huge poster of The Rock SHOULD have unfurled. Confetti and balloons descend, and we get another window-this one shows a pic of Rocky as a child, underscored with his birthday-May 2nd. Important later. The Rock appears totally unimpressed.

Mankind summons various folks from the People's Champ's past. Well no, looks like this is edited-we go straight to Rocky's 'High school sweetheart'. A pretty blonde hits the ring (pop-up: 'Local Actress'). The Rock graphically reminisces about their early romantic escapades-then reminds her that she cut him off at 'second base'. Rock teases giving her one more shot at the People's Strudel, thinks better of it, tells her to poontang her ass on out.

Actress bails, Mankind attempts to apologize-Rock cuts him off. Mankind tries again, offering some presents-a 'Rock n Sock Connection' jacket and a personalized 'Mr. Rocko'. He unveils a covered figure at ringside-Yurple the Clown. Rock STILL unimpressed, he disses Yurple…Mankind gets hot, points out his hard work in putting together this affair. He asks Yurple to lead the crowd in a rendition of 'Happy Birthday'. As she does, a cake is brought to ringside. Yurple bails, Rock thanks the fans, then informs 'the stupid son of a bitch' of his actual birth date. Mankind counters by saying any day he spends with Rocky feels like SOMEBODY's birthday.

Segment cuts off, dialog box appears informing us the Rock n' Sock connection broke up 2 months later. Break.

Back, Gene previews tonight's 'Divas Undressed' special, coming up next. Some of the participants give their feelings on the competition. Break.

Gene returns with more Diva talk. We hear from Terri, who shows us the contents of her garment bag-footwear, lingerie and makeup make up its bulk.

OK, let's wrap up. Gene informs us that HHH successfully underwent elbow surgery earlier this week and is expected back in action within a month. End of show.

As you probably know, this show was pretty much put together on the fly-it was originally planned to be centered on a behind the scenes look at the 'Divas Undressed' special which was supposed to air earlier this week on TNN. However, the network nixed that broadcast, citing the shows excessive raciness.  I guess WWE felt a behind the scenes look at a show that hadn't yet aired would be awkward, thus we got tonight's show, which, I thought, was pretty decent.

2002 - AAA aired TV on Galavision.  Victor Martinez filed the following report:

Galavision Lucha Libre Report
June 29, 2002
CMLL came in at 1hr/43mins. AAA came in at 1hr/12mins.

Mr. Niebla meets his partners Atlantis, and Black Warrior in the locker room, all carrying soccer balls, all stoked about Mexico being in the playoffs. They discuss Dr. Wagner's team saying they dealt with the Japanese well. And that Wagner even sent one of them home already. They make plans to win the trios titles.

Black Tiger, Nozawa, and Masada vs. Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, and Black Warrior

1st Fall: Very good match. Black Tiger displayed quite a few moves he picked up from the Japanese. However, Black Warrior gives Tiger a tornado DDT and a huricanrana pin for the win.

2nd Fall: Warrior gets his mask ripped as the rudos make their comeback. Black Tiger gives Warrior a sort of outsiders edge move but dropping him front first and pinned him. Nozawa and Masada submit Niebla together.

3rd Fall: Black Warrior gives Tiger a nice tope but in the process unmasks him. While in the ring, Niebla submits Nozawa, and Atlantis submits Masada to a abdominal stretch.

Gigante Silva and Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs. Universo 2000, Mascara Ano 2000, and Apollo Dantes

One Fall Match: Rudos beat up Silva 3 on 1 for a while. They play a game of tug of war with Rayo's arms, Silva pulling on one arm and the 3 Dinamites on the other. Silva wins. Rayo does a plancha from the top rope onto Universo. Silva does a splash onto Mascara, but Apollo stops the ref from counting. When suddenly Silva low blows Apollo and gets DQ'd. Dinamites win. Bad match.

Pierroth addresses the troops Patton-like as he lays out his game plan of beating the enemy. Bulldog thanks Pierroth for bringing him to Mexico and says he will help out any way he can. Veneno lays out the wargame strategy for the Boricua troops.

Veneno, Violencia, and Bulldog vs. Gran Markus Jr., Mr. Mexico, and Poder Boricua.

1st Fall: All 3 rudos work on Markus 3 on 1. However Mr. Mexico submits Veneno, and Poder delivers power slam and pins Violencia.

2nd Fall: Mexico delivers a monkey flip and flips Violencia right out of the ring and delivers a tope. Poder does one on Veneno. Markus has Bulldog pinned but Pierroth comes in and sprays something in Markus' face getting his team DQ'd. The rest of the Boricua army come in and beat up Markus.

Highlight Moments: Black Warrior doing a top rope legdrop. Ramstein doing a top rope piledriver on Sombra de Plata. Volador Jr. doing a plancha, Tigre Blanco doing one too onto Dr. X. And the move where Shocker tried the bronco buster move on Tarzan Boy but got low blowed instead.

Shocker and Mascara Magica meet outside a gym, Shocker says he not only is 1000% good looking but is 1000% intellegent too. He says he looks in the mirror and loves what he sees and that he has full confidence in Magica. Magica says he still owes Tarzan since he's the one who he lost his mask too.

Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero, and Rey Bucanero vs. Shocker, Mascara Magica, and Negro Casas

1st Fall: Very good match. Los Infernales are in full control most of the way. Rey submits Negro with a gory special and Ultimo pins Magica. All 3 gang up and submit Shocker together.

2nd Fall: The tecnicos make their comeback. Negro give Ultimo a DDT on the ring apron. Shocker submits Rey, Magica submits Tarzan, and Negro gives Ultimo a nice senton and a pin.

3rd Fall: Magica does a top rope flying elboy on Ultimo, and Negro does another senton from the apron to the floor onto Rey. Alot of nice moves, Shocker and Magica do twin topes onto Ultimo and Tarzan. Meanwhile Casas tries a Rana on Rey, but Rey headbutts his crotch instead for a low blow and a pin. Infernales win. Very Good Match.

Next Week: Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Black Warrior, Felino, Lizmark Jr., Los Infernales, Juventud Gerrera, Halloween, Damian 666, and Nicho El Millionario(Psicosis).

AAA:

Opens with an interview with Raul "Copetes" Salazar the rudo ref. says he is LLL ref. and that he favors Hector Garza and Electroshock. He says Latin Lover is nothing and he ought to go back to dancing for old ladies. And that Lady Apache is useless.

Rerun match already covered: Latin Lover, Gronda, Dos Caras, and Alebrije with Cuije vs. Hector Garza, Canek, Chessman, and Monsther with Chuky.

For AAA World Heavyweight Title: Champion Hector Garza vs Latin Lover.

Latin came to the ring decked out in a Batman outfit. Garza the defending champion was seconded by Tiffany, and Latin was seconded by Lady Apache.

1st Fall: Starts very slow and rudo ref Salazar helps Garza every now and then. Salazar takes a bump Garza low blows Latin Salazar recovers in time to count the pin.

2nd Fall: This fall is fairly normal. The women get involved briefly as Tiffany hts Latin, but this ends with Latin submitting Garza.

3rd Fall: A series of near falls as the women get involved again. Lady Apache does a tope on Tiffany and Latin does one on Garza. The women pull down the guys tights, exposing their butts. Garza power bombs Lady Apache, and a table is set up in a corner of the ring. Latin picks up Apache but Garza tackles them sending them both through the table. Latin low blows Garza and pins him. However Tiffany tells Salazar and Salazar reverses the decision. Garza wins retains his title. Afterward Pimpinela Escarlata comes in and attacks Tiffany. And helps Latin out.

2002 - NWA Wildside Freedom Fight was held.  Larry Goodman filed the following report:

"This was Wildside's tribute to CZW" - Bill Behrens

NWA Wildside's Freedom Fight 2002 was both exhilarating and exhausting. Almost 4-1/2 hours of action. Three title changes. A few phenomenally sick bumps. The worst bloodbath in the history of the promotion. Monumental for the sheer quantity and quality of the wrestling. Incredible effort from virtually every performer.

Whatever some of the recent TV taping lacked in depth and intensity, was more than made up for by this incredible show. I had the pleasure of sitting with Jess McGrath from 1wrestling.com, who flew in for the event. Check out Moonsaults Online for Jess's thoughts on the show.

1) Rage (Mike Pittman & Scott Cage) beat Future Shock (Brandon P & Jay Freeze) in 10:02. These teams must be sick of each other by now, or maybe it's just that I'm sick of seeing this match. Crowd was hot for some action. Rage dominated the early going. Future Shock managed to get off a new double team where P monkey flipped Freeze up into a lariat on one of the Rage. Tide turned when P pulled the ropes down on Pittman, who took a stiff shot into the rail from Freeze. Future Shock got heat on Pittman with double teams and series of near falls. Pittman finally hit a neckbreaker and made what would have normally been the hot tag, but Future Shock cut Cage off to stay on offense. Pittman intervened with an enzuigiri to get the tag from Cage. Nice finishing sequence: Pittman got dumped to the apron, pulled the ropes to flip P over the top, and then flipped back to the inside. Rage won it with their nagasateru neckbreaker combo on Freeze. Excellent opening bout. Somebody please tell me this program is over.

2) Magnum beat "Little Cocky" Carlton Kaz to retain the NWA Tri-State Heavyweight Title in 7:18. The only thing worse than a bad wrestling match is a bad wrestling match with lousy comedy. This was a stinker. Match really had no business being on this show and was better suited for a dark match at a TV taping. Frederick got a near fall with the Iconclasm. Magnum won it with flip off the top rope into a stunner.

3) Slim J beat Jeremy V in 12:18. Let the sick bumps begin. J took a nasty bump almost right off the bat as V was having his way with him. J hit a beautiful climbing-the-ropes spinning roundhouse kick. J's turn on offense. All kinds of offense for a slew of two counts. J used a devastating short-arm clothesline on V, who was on the apron. J gave V a back bodydrop onto the ramp. Time for the psychotic dive of the night. J did a flying headbutt from the top rope all the way to the ramp, landing with a sickening thud. He somehow got up from it. J got V up on his shoulders for a finishing move, but V countered with a forward rolling cradle for a two count. V dropped J with a brainbuster that looked way too dangerous for a near fall. V hit a moonsault, but J kicked out again. J got V on his shoulders again. This time, he cradled V and dropped him straight on his head for the three count.

4) Jay Briscoe beat Mark Briscoe in 20:30. There's so much I haven't seen that I'm not in a position to rank it. What is beyond question is that this was a truly outstanding match. Yo, NWA TNA, looking for talent to fill out that X Title division? Some highlights. It started with extensive chain wrestling: hammerlocks, headlocks, arm wringers. Really well done. Some hardcore idiots yelled "boring" a few times but what can you do? The first big move was an inverted STF by Jay. Jay did a mat headscissors and Mark popped out of it to grab a side headlock. Mark got a Muta style leglock with bridging chinlock. Mark grapevined the leg into an Indian deathlock. I think it was Mark who hit a top rope bronco buster. That left Jay sitting in the corner, so Mark followed up with a brutal dropkick. Mark got a Northern lights for two. Jay hit a big DDT at the 10 minute mark. Jay used a sitout gourdbuster. Jay set Mark in the tree of woe for a running legdrop to the face. Mark got a standing octopus and took it to the mat. Jay went back to the basics with side headlocks. Jay hit a back suplex. Jay used a facebuster variation for a two count. Jay decapitated Mark with a short arm clothesline. Jay hit a top rope legdrop for a two count. Jay sitout facebuster off the top. Mark landed a knee to the face of Jay that sent them both over the top rope. Jay used an awesome cradle neckbreaker for a two count. Jay used back to back German suplexes without breaking his grip and then, released it on the third one. Jay hit a sitout brainbuster for another near fall. Mark used a dragon suplex for two, a Tazplex and a springboard missile dropkick for another two count. Mark used a variation of a Burning Hammer and Jay kicked out of the pin. Jay hit a J driller for a false finish. One more J driller and it was over. What a match.

Post match saw T-N-T pounce on Briscoes until Lost Boyz chased them out.

5) "The Winner" Kevin Harden & Jeff G. Bailey beat "That Guy" Dustin by forfeit. Bailey came out in his wrestling attire complete a T-shirt emblazoned with 666. Bailey said they had stripped "That Guy" of his dignity, humiliated him and taken his soul. This was to be his last opportunity to prove himself but according to Bailey, Guy got nervous and no-showed. Bailey said they would do the match at next week's TV taping. He threatened to send a driver to North Carolina and put Dustin in the trunk, so they could humiliate him one last time. Ref Andrew Thomas did a ten count to make the forfeit official.

6) The FBI (Guido Maritato & Tony Mamaluke & Terry Knightenelli) beat Onyx & G-Rated (Kid Xtasy & Kid Kool) in 16:02. This match had its problems. Maritato had a good exchange with Kool, where Kool moonsaulted to his feet and hit spinning headscissors for a two count. Maritato dropped an elbow to the groin, hit a dropkick and locked on an STF. Onyx tossed Mamaluke over the top onto his FBI partners and got down on all fours. Xtasy did a triple jump dive using Onyx's back as a platform. Kool did a springboard dive right off of Onyx. Onyx took Guido to his knees out of the test of strength. Onyx chopped away at Guido, who had no problems selling for the genetic freak. Kool slipped off the ropes on an aerial move. Maritato made a nice recovery by turning it into a Fujiwara armbar. Mamaluke took a bump off the top buckle and Kool missed huge on a 540 moonsault that has to be seen to be believed. Maritato was not going to sell for guys as little as G-Rated if it their offense didn't look credible and some of Xtasy's didn't. Guido put him in a cross armbreaker. The FBI got heat on Xtasy. Knightenelli speared Xtasy as he was on the way down from an FBI flapjack. Maritato put him in the Walls. Knightenelli missed on a top rope elbow to set up the hot tag to Onyx. Things got messy here. Onyx powerslammed Maritato. G-Rated doubled on Mamaluke. Onyx got dumped. FBI doubled on Xtasy using a Mamaluke top rope Russian legsweep/Maritato suplex combo for the finisher. Mamaluke laid Kool out with a gordbuster for good measure. For some unknown reason, Mamaluke and Knightenelli turned on Maritato in the postmatch. Mamaluke had Maritato in a cross armbreaker until Onyx saved him. Maritato made peace with the faces.

7) Caprice Coleman (with Sweet Dreams) beat Cru Jones (with Destiny) to win the World TV title in 9:26. Good match with kind of a weird finish. The stipulation here was that Dreams was handcuffed to Destiny. Jones got in Coleman's face. Coleman offered Jones some gum for his bad breath. Early part of the match was all Coleman. He used a skin the cat headscissors, followed by a plancha to the floor with some impressive hang time. Coleman did spin around the ringpost baseball slide. It backfired when there was nobody home on the receiving end. Jones tossed Coleman into the rail and gave him a shot to the ring apron. Back on the inside, Jones was in control. Jones kicked a three-pointer to the gonads. Jones cut off a Coleman comeback with an inverted atomic drop and leveled him with a clothesline. Coleman hit the spin scissors kick. Coleman did the senton/Asai moonsault combo. That was good for a two count. Jones hit a German suplex. Dreams and Destiny in the ring now. They gave Jones a double backdrop. Coleman hit a top rope legdrop for a good near fall. In desperation, Jones hit Coleman with a set of knucks, but Coleman kicked out. Coleman laid Jones out with a neckbreaker. Dreams and Destiny were perched on the top rope. I guess the idea was that Dreams dragged her up there, but it sure looked like it was the other way around. In any case, they landed a legdrop off the top on Jones. Coleman hit the Thermal Shock. New TV champion.

8) Jimmy Rave beat Rocky Reynolds and Jeremy Lopez in a three-way dance to win the NWA World Junior title in 7:20. Reynolds has a big league entrance and more than held up his end in the ring. Lopez made it clear that his Wildside Junior title was not on the line. Solid three-way action all the way. Match started with Rave dominating both of his opponents. Rave did a senton dive to the outside off the top rope. They did a cool spot where Reynolds did a senton bomb on Rave while Lopez had him in a Mexican surfboard. Reynolds then clotheslined Lopez. Rave hit a German on Reynolds. "Ichiban!!" Lopez seized the opportunity to hit his elevated DDT finisher on Rave, but Reynolds broke up the pin. Reynolds did an Angle slam on Lopez. Rave did a sunset powerbomb on Lopez. Reynolds broke up the pin again. Reynolds hit a Russian legsweep followed by an Arabian press for a two count on Rave. Lopez brainbustered Reynolds for two. Lopez used that brutal looking backdrop driver neckbreaker on Rave. Reynolds broke up yet another pin attempt to save his title. Rave locked the Crippler Crossface on Reynolds. Lopez dropped an elbow to break the hold. Lopez clotheslined Rave for two. Rave hit a tornado DDT on Lopez. Reynolds pulled Rave off when he tried to cover. Reynolds used La Magistral cradle for a near fall. Rave rolled up Reynolds with a headscissors cradle for a near fall. Rave used a Northern Lights Bomb to secure the pinfall and title. Ref Andrew Thomas hesitated on the three count, so there was some unfortunate confusion and the pop for the title change was delayed. Still, a very good title match, especially for a three-way.

9) Lost Boyz (Azrael & Gabriel) beat T-N-T (Todd Sexton & Tony Stradlin) by DQ in 23:02 to retain the NWA Wildside tag team titles. A pure spotfest. As expected, both teams pulled out all the stops. They just went too long, given that the cage match was still to come. Azrael did a dragon screw early. Gabriel pulled out an Oklahoma roll. At one point, Gabriel and Stradlin were literally rocking each other with ridiculously hard slaps. Lost Boyz hit the dropkick sandwich on Sexton. Gabriel moonsaulted to his feet, but got caught with a sleeper drop by Sexton. Stradlin hit a springboard clothesline on Gabriel for a two count. Azrael landed kicks from all sorts of angles on Stradlin. Gabriel did an Arabian press to his feet and nailed Stradlin with a springboard dropkick. T-N-T took over on the outside on Gabriel. Sexton hit a version of the Gamebreaker with Gabriel hanging off the apron. Azrael had to save the pin. T-N-T abused Gabriel with all kinds of moves. Gabriel pulled Sexton's pants down on a sunset flip. Sexton gave him a bare-assed lariat. Gabriel blocked Sexton's Northern lights suplex and planted him with a DDT. Hot tag to Azrael at the 15 minute mark. Azrael used a DVD on Stradlin. Lost Boyz planted Sexton with the Fall in Arcadia and hit the Time Warp on Stradlin for a near fall. Lost Boyz tried to double on Stradlin again, but he broke it up with a reverse huracanrana. The amount of offense in this match was mind boggling. Sexton did a tope over the top rope! Lost Boyz did their new finisher OFF THE TOP ROPE, putting Stradlin in a reverse cradle and dropping him right on his freaking head. Sexton pulled out the ref to prevent the tree count. Lost Boyz nailed Sexton with a double crossed arms backbreaker. T-N-T somehow got the advantage again. Sexton put Gabriel in a tarantula variation on one side of the ring and Stradlin nailed him with a Van Terminator from the other side. An absolutely killer move. Gabriel kicked out of the cradle spike piledriver! Azrael dumped Stradlin and hit a frogsplash elbow on Sexton. Sexton kicked out. We had our first (only?) ref bump of the night. T-N-T started whipping Lost Boyz with the title belts until Nelson called for the DQ. Briscoes made the save and got a good face pop doing it. Lost Boyz stared at Briscoes, as if they weren't sure what to make of it.

10) In a cage gauntlet style match, Adam Jacobs won the NWA Wildside Heavyweight Title in a total time of 53:35. This was originally billed as a War Games match. The bookers decided to make the change when Jason Cross quit and Homicide took a booking with New Jack for the 3PW show. It worked fine from the perspective of ring action and storyline development. There was just no way to get sustained crowd response by going an hour at this point in the show, so the title change was something of an anti-climax.

Iceberg (with Bailey) pinned Scottie Wrenn in 4:49. I was talking to one of the workers outside during most of this. Was told I didn't miss much. Iceberg kicked out of Wrenn's Psycho Slam finisher. Wrenn tried it again. Iceberg messed it up and got the pin.

Iceberg (with Bailey) beat Tank in 7:19. Before he could get in the ring, Tank was attacked by Wrenn. Iceberg took the veggie peeler to him right away. Tank got color. Iceberg missed an avalanche splash in the corner. Tank pulled out a homemade wooden stake and starting stabbing Iceberg's forehead. Major juice flowing out of the Iceberg. Tank got a cross armbreaker. Tank speared Iceberg into the cage. Iceberg squashed Tank's innards on the buckles with an avalanche splash from behind. Tank kicked out of one Ground Zero splash, but he was dead meat after the second one. Iceberg avenges his loss to Tank at Hardcore Hell.

David Young beat Iceberg (with Bailey) in 8:28. Young collapsed trying for a slam. Iceberg picked off a piece of bloody flesh that was hanging from his forehead. Damn, that was disgusting. Iceberg launched Young into the cage, javelin style. Young was busted open a little. Iceberg dropped Young with an Avalanche in the corner and followed with a baseball slide to the nads. Iceberg missed on a quarter-ton senton bomb. Lateral press by Young and Iceberg kicked out. Young with a Shining Wizard version of the enzuigiri. Iceberg speared Young for a two count. Young slammed the Iceberg. Young missed on a moonsault. They went to the top. Young gave Iceberg a spinebuster off the top for the pin.

Rick Michaels beat David Young in 2:44. Young was done after the match with Iceberg. He got two with a spinebuster before Michaels beat him with the Double Shot.

Rainman (with Bailey) beat Rick Michaels in 11:15. Rainman had a roll of barbed wire with him. This turned into the single most gory bloodletting in the history of Wildside. Forget the crimson mask, forget about Tommy Rich, this was way beyond anything that tame. Michaels was covered in blood: his face, his hair, his chest, his back. Michaels was literally wringing the blood out of his hair. Ref Andrew Thomas was beside himself as the blood was getting smeared all over his shirt. Michaels wedged the roll of wire in the cage and raked Rainman's head across the wire. No idea how Michael was still standing. Rainman was pretty well busted open himself. Michaels hit the Double Shot for a near fall. They mounted the top rope. Bailey caught Michaels with a face full of powder and Rainman gave him a spinebuster off the top for the pin.

Adam Jacobs beat Rainman. Bailey told Jacobs that Rainman was going to be the next champ, so he should do the right thing and lay down. "It's not a big deal." Jacobs laid down. Rainman did a lazy back cover and wouldn't you know it? Jacobs suddenly rolled him up for a quick three. Jacobs told Bailey to get f***ed. Instant babyface turn. Fans serenaded Rainman with a good-bye song.

Adam Jacobs beat A. J. Styles in 14:13. Styles came out wearing the NWA TNA X Title belt. They wrestled for a while. Styles did the chest moonsault and KILLED Jacobs with the followup clothesline. They did a spot where both of them hung from the top of the cage and dropped to the floor. The cage was dangerously close to falling apart. It really needs to go to the scrap heap. Towards the end, security had to run around and hold the cage in place. I found myself thinking that A. J. Styles doesn't need this at this point in his career. For that matter, who does? Styles gave Jacobs a powerbomb on the floor. Back inside, Jacobs missed on a frogsplash. Styles hit a brainbuster for a two count. Styles flipped Jacobs into the cage with a headscissors. Jacobs landed on his feet to counter a suplex, so Styles dropped him with a neckbreaker. Jacobs used a superplex for a near fall. Styles got two with a dragon suplex. Styles missed the Spiral Tap and Jacobs covered for two. Jacobs dumped Styles into the cage and to open a small cut on Styles' back. Styles put Jacobs in the tree of woe and hit a flying forearm. The finish saw Styles with Jacobs in position for the Clash off the top rope. Jacobs was able to grip the cage, flip Styles off the top and quickly cover for the three count. Good pop for Jacobs, but the crowd pretty well exhausted. Styles congratulated Jacobs after the match.

John Phoenix, who along with Jacobs and Air Paris was an original member of Suicidal Tendencies, made his return to Wildside after a year long absence. Phoenix congratulated Jacobs on his victory ... and turned on him. Phoenix gave Jacobs an inverted X factor off the top rope. Bailey called Jacobs "the runt of the litter," the bottom of the NWA Elite. Bailey called Phoenix the man who trained Jason Cross. Phoenix got on the mic and said he had been watching from home for a year while Jacobs destroyed the legacy of Suicidal Tendencies. Phoenix buried Cross, saying he quit "just like the pussy he is." Phoenix said to hell with Suicidal Tendencies, he was going to bring respect back to the NWA Elite. Styles hit the ring and tossed Bailey into the cage. Styles gave Phoenix a high backdrop that sent him scrambling out of the cage. Styles said Phoenix quit a long time ago, supposedly to get in shape. Styles challenged Phoenix & Rainman to a match on 7/6 with Jacobs as his partner.

This show had all the makings of a great home video, where one wouldn't be forced to watch the whole four and a half hours in one sitting.

NOTES: Crowd was in the range of 225-250. ... Wildside returns to the NCW Arena for a TV Taping on 7/6. In addition to Styles & Jacobs vs. Phoenix & Rainman and That Guy vs. Harden & Bailey, the taping will have Young vs. Iceberg, Wrenn vs. Tank and from Texas, Overboyz vs. The Professionals (Former NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion Mike Thunder & John Allen). ... Briscoe Brothers return on 7/20. ... "That Guy" Dustin was forced to cancel his booking for this weekend due to illness.

However, he was told that he would have unlimited power and he could do whatever he wants. Batista says that he can make Orton’s life a living nightmare.

Welcome to my rambling thoughts on the second show for pro wrestling's newest indy and freshest concept. One positive to doing WCA coverage is I'm not worried about having to flee from my table while I'm writing up the show since I fully expect most of the action to remain in the ring and around ringside. This will not be a Mike Johnson or Zombie Rich style play by play. It will be results and all things good or bad that stood out to me during the matches. The fans are filing in and we are almost ready to go! This is a Les Thatcher show for sure, we're starting on time!
Just like Block A we start with all the competitors in the ring for the announcement of the rules and the welcome from our host the hot as hell Maria. I hate Mike Bennett.

Very classy 10 bell salute for Matt Bourne.

Maria blows her job as hostess by mentioning the wrong charity. Scott L. Schwartz was last time, this time it is the Boys and Girls Club of Simi Valley. She's still hot.

Same girls were back for the National Anthem and were even better than last time. Some dipsh** to my right sat and drank a beer the entire time, I hope somebody shoot kicks him in the nuts before the night is over.

Match 1: Alternates Match to replace the Davey/O'Reilly spot due to Block A draw

Timothy Thatcher vs. Oliver John

Let's go Thatcher chant to start. Les is over! (Okay it may have been for Timothy.)

Our first John Oliver joke comes from the crowd two minutes into the match. There is some really strong mat wrestling going on. John Oliver on top trying to ground and pound. Both guys trade going for cross arm breakers to get an early submission and fail. Oliver John looks legit, great look and everything he does looks credible. Nasty open hand shots to Thatcher.

Out of nowhere, Oliver John dumps Thatcher on the back of his head with a suplex while they were jockeying for position and scores the first fall with 4:30 left

JOHN: 1 THATCHER: 0

Thatcher on his back doing the Inoki/Ali crab attack, thankfully it didn't last long. Oliver with another suplex as Thatcher has begun targeting his leg. Two minute warning and John is slowing it down to hold his 1-0 lead. Good psychology. Thatcher grabbing different leg holds but John keeps fighting to the ropes. Thatcher finally gets a heel hook in the middle to tie it via submission.

JOHN: 1 THATCHER: 1

With his leg hurt John bails out of the ring with the time running down to bring us to OVERTIME. Thatcher is pissed that John is running and wants to fight. John went back for his nasty open hand strikes but Thatcher ducks one and counters into another leglock. Injured and nowhere to go John has to tap. GREAT WRESTLING OPENER!

FINAL SCORE: THATCHER: 2 JOHN: 1 THATCHER ADVANCES!

Super sportsman post match promo from both putting over each other and old school wrestling. This was wonderful.

MATCH 2: BLOCK B BEGINS: WILLIE MACK VS. BRANDON GATSON

Size vs. skill to open as the bigger Willie is trying to run over Brandon but Brandon is using technique to keep the more powerful Willie grounded.

That didn’t last long, while trying to stay one step ahead Willie catches Brandon with a sit out powerbomb out of the corner to take the lead with 6:48 remaining.

WILLIE MACK: 1 BRANDON GATSON: 0

Willie Mack keeps his momentum going and Gaston ends up on the apron. Mack screams at the ref to move and charges Gatson which telegraphs what is coming. Gatson then slingshots into the ring with a RKO to tie the score via pinfall.

WILLIE MACK: 1 BRANDON GATSON: 1

In a sloppy sequence, Gaston hits a handspring splash into the corner, and fails at lifting the heavier Mack into a side slam. Mack shoots him into the ropes, Gatson goes for a hurrancanrana, and Mack turns it into a Sloppy Ass Powerbomb to take a 2-1 lead.

WILLIE MACK: 2 BRANDON GATSON: 1

Gatson goes for a few quick cradles and then locks in an armbar, but Mack holds on till the clock runs out and wins the matchup to advance. Solid even with the sloppy second point for Mack.

FINAL SCORE: WILLIE MACK: 2 BRANDON GATSON: 1

Willie cuts a promo said he had the match won the second he walked through the curtain and nobody reps LA like he does. He is going to win the ring for LA. Crowd was solidly behind the charismatic Willie Mack.

MATCH 3: DJ HYDE VS. DRAKE YOUNGER

CZW chant for Hyde to start. Drake Younger gets a big chant from the crowd in attendance. So far he’s the most over guy here so far. Nice exchange at the start as both guys try to go up 1-0 with a flash pin off of various cradles. DJ Hyde as Nikita no selling the Younger chops and then unloading on him with Younger selling like he’s being chopped by Big Show. Hyde then hits the not quite Stan Hansen lariat to go up 1-0 with 6:41 left.

DJ HYDE: 1 DRAKE YOUNGER 0

Younger starts to get momentum but Hyde turns it around with a spear. Seems like Hyde has scouted Younger well until Younger surprises him with the Cop Killer out of nowhere to tie the score with 3:24 left to go on the clock.

DJ HYDE: 1 DRAKE YOUNGER 1

We have our first DQ of the tournament as Hyde loses it and tosses the ref down twice when he can’t put Younger away after a couple of big throws. Hyde’s temper loses him a point with 1:21 to go and Younger is in the lead.

DJ HYDE: 0 DRAKE YOUNGER 1

Hyde hits a Death Valley Driver with time running out, but Younger kicks out and holds on to win. DJ’s temper just cost him the match. The clock appeared to malfunction during the match at the finish but Hyde got the full 10 minutes to get his point back and failed.

FINAL SCORE: DRAKE YOUNGER: 1 DJ HYDE: 0

Hyde complains after the match that he was the true winner since he kicked that crap out of Younger for most of the match and blames the clock malfunction for his loss. Younger is asked if it is a hollow victory and says no way because you do what it takes to move on in this prestigious tournament. He puts over his heart and desire and the crowd chants “Best in the World” at Younger after the promo.

Wrestling Cares runs down the matches set for August  17th for the beginning of round 2, we will post those on the site later. A special attraction match between MATT HARDY and SHAWN DAIVARI was announced for the next show. So far three matches and three different stories told. The opener as by far the best match so far, but the follow ups have been solid.

MATCH 4: ALEX REYNOLDS VS. ANTONIO THOMAS

After some back and forth chain wrestling Reynolds pulls out the Backlund Bridge to score the first fall of the match with 6:30 remaining. Thomas immediately tries to cradle Reynolds to tie it but fails.

SCORE: ALEX REYNOLDS: 1 ANTONIO THOMAS: 0

With the clock at about 3:30 Reynolds is trying to hold Thomas down and run the clock. Thomas fights out and hits a Randy Orton style powerslam for a nice near fall, he catches a vulnerable Reynolds in a leglock for a quick submission to tie the score with 2:55 left.

SCORE: ALEX REYNOLDS: 1 ANTONIO THOMAS: 1

Thomas goes into shooter mode and takes Reynolds down again locks on the Rings of Saturn for a tap tap tap to take the lead with 2 minutes left.

SCORE: ALEX REYNOLDS: 1 ANTONIO THOMAS: 2

Now it is Thomas trying to hold Reynolds on the mat to run the clock out with less than 2 minutes left. Good psychology. Reynolds fights up and catches Thomas with a lift into a Codebreaker to tie it up with 28 seconds left.

SCORE: ALEX REYNOLDS: 2 ANTONIO THOMAS: 2

“Sudden Death!” chant from the crowd as both guys try a couple of quick pinning combinations as time runs out. Next point wins the match.

Thomas showing great heart after being hit with a roaring elbow and a suplex into a stunner that Reynolds didn’t quite get all of he escapes a near fall. Reynolds then hits a moonsault which gets another near fall. Frustrated but thinking Thomas is done, Reynolds moves in for the kill and is put into the Rings of Saturn again. He holds on as long as he can, but has to tap. Antonio is moving on!

FINAL SCORE: ALEX REYNOLDS: 2 ANTONIO THOMAS: 3

Both men shake hands and the crowd chants “Please come back!” to Reynolds. Thomas puts over Reynolds as the toughest guy he ever faced. Thomas is geared up for the next round! If you like solid wrestling that tells good stories during the matches you need to give this product a look.

As we’re coming back from intermission I am watching lots of kids wander around and their little kid voices have been very loud all night. I guess you don’t have to book wrestlers as complete two dimensional goofs to get kids into your product.

Maria is the reverse Abdullah the Butcher, instead of sending people in the audience scampering in all directions, they line up to follow her as she wanders through the building during intermission. Men, women, and children. Not me! (I was served with an order to stay 50 yards away.)

Time for the heart of WCA. Time for the donation to The Boys and Girls Club of Simi Valley. People in the crowd are chanting for Maria during this segment. The big check gets presented to Lethal Logan X who is representing the charity and he is very grateful. All good wrestling aside, the WCA crew donating 25% of their gate to a different charity every show should be applauded loudly…chanting for Maria doesn’t count.

MATCH 5: INTERPROMOTIONAL TAG TEAM CHALLENGE MATCH

EWF’s Fallen Empire, Ryan Taylor & Mondo Vega vs. Millennium Pro Wrestling’s ‘Lethal’ Logan X & JJ Steele

Traditional rules for this bad boy as it is a special bonus attraction. Ryan Taylor has a necklace on in the tradition of AJ Styles and Samoa Joe, in the tradition of me I hope somebody chokes him with it. Logan X and JJ are the babyfaces which makes sense since Logan X just graciously accepted a donation on behalf of the Boys and Girls Club of Simi Valley. Logan played face in peril before making the hot tag. Pretty standard tag action so far. After a miscommunication between JJ and Logan takes JJ out Fallen Empire hits Logan with The Snapshot for the win. Our charity hero gets beat. I was worried this would take me out of the world built within the tournament since it was under standard rules, but they worked a style that fit the product.

WINNERS BY PINFALL: FALLEN EMPIRE

MATCH 6: BJ WHITMER VS. SHAUN TEMPERS.

BJ gets the big ROH chant to start. Tempers gets a “Who are you?” and now “Keep your temper!” Kids get behind Tempers because the adults are chanting for BJ. Anti-bullying children! BJ kept jockeying for a rear naked but couldn’t lock it in, finally with just over 7 minutes he got it cinched to go up 1-0 via tapout. Shaun tapped out fast because he didn’t want to get choked out and rendered useless learning from the first show.

SCORE: BJ WHITMER: 1 SHAUN TEMPERS: 0

Tempers powers BJ up into a nasty sitout powerbomb to tie the score. That should have been a fall and it was. He hit it nice. 4:15 left and we are TIED.

SCORE: BJ WHITMER: 1 SHAUN TEMPERS: 1

Brief YAY/BOO punch sequence but BJ wasn’t having it. He starts blasting away with forearms. Tempers pulls a nice neckbreaker counter, but BJ counters a charge in the corner with an enzuigiri. Nice near fall sequence with BJ hitting two vertical suplexes and then two Fisherman’s Suplexes. The story is Tempers has great heart, but keeps the pressure on and hits a T-Bone suplex to take the lead. The veteran is overwhelming Tempers with physical wrestling right now.

SCORE: BJ WHITMER: 2 SHAUN TEMPERS: 1

Tempers realizes he has less than a minute and is trying to score a cradle pin on BJ, BJ is escaping try after try but is wearing down from all the kickouts. Another near fall on a jackknife pin gets the crowd roaring. Tempers can’t follow up as the crowd loudly chants the clock down. Good stuff!

FINAL SCORE: BJ WHITMER: 2 SHAUN TEMPERS: 1

BJ calls the best pro wrestling in the world Ring of Honor wrestling and the fans know it because they are chanting ROH even though the TV doesn’t air in LA. BJ hasn’t heard of this Internet thing. BJ wants the ring. I love how all the guys really put over how bad they want to win this whole thing.

MATCH 7: “SCRAP IRON” ADAM PEARCE VS. ADAM PAGE

Scrap Daddy time! I really enjoy Pearce so I am looking forward to this. Early chants for the former NWA world champ and in a shock Pearce doesn’t heel everybody. Pearce enjoying the fans chants and goofing off a bit gets caught by Page in a school boy and falls behind 1-0.

SCORE: ADAM PAGE: 1 ADAM PEARCE: 0

Pearce charges enraged and gets rolled up for another fall almost immediately. 2-0 with 8 minutes left.

SCORE: ADAM PAGE: 2 ADAM PEARCE: 0

The huge favorite is now the underdog cause if he drops another fall he loses via mercy rule. Crowd is really begging Pearce to make a comeback. Great story for this match. Even down 2-0 Pearce remains arrogant taking control and putting Page’s ball cap on. Page immediately takes over once Pearce starts playing around. Our first outside the ring action takes place during match 7. Pearce takes it outside hoping getting dirty with Page will turn the tide. He’s starting to get serious. He better cause he’s got less than 4 minutes to score two wins. Pearce is an eyelash away from getting mercy ruled as he barely kicks out of a superplex. Two minute warning and the chants for Scrap Iron start again since he’s running out of time. Pearce hits a crushing lariat to win a fall and make it 2-1 with less than a minute to go.

SCORE: ADAM PAGE: 2 ADAM PEARCE: 1

Time is running out and Pearce is desperate to continue so he can even up the match. The ref is holding him back. Pearce is freaking cause there are under 30 seconds left. Ref checks on Page again and he’s out like a light, he can’t continue and the ref won’t allow Pearce to abuse him. Ref stops the match.

FINAL SCORE: ADAM PAGE: 2 ADAM PEARCE: 1 BUT ADAM PEARCE WINS VIA TKO WHEN PAGE CAN’T CONTINUE.

Post match promo has Pearce dismissing the ref. He wants a round of applause for Page. He can’t live with the fact he’s moving on but the scoreboard says he’s a loser. He feels like a loser and he has a lot to prove to next round. He’s going to prove it to Willie Mack. Best promo of the night.

MATCH 8: JOHNNY GARGANO VS CHASE STEVENS

Announcer once again calls the final match the main event of the evening. It is a tournament they are all the main event. They need to instruct the ring announcer to stop that. Call it the final contest of the evening. I know it is ring announcer shtick but it doesn’t make sense.

Chase Stevens is Hogan orange. I think he’s going to marry Brooke next. Super macho handshake to start from Chase as he does the super hand squeeze. He’s caught staring at the crowd and Gargano scores a fall with a tornado DDT 30 seconds in.

SCORE: JOHNNY GARGANO: 1 CHASES STEVENS: 0

Gargano tries to press the advantage but Chase crushes him with a counter slam and scores a quick fall to tie it right back up. Both guys now realize discretion may be the better part of valor.

SCORE: JOHNNY GARGANO: 1 CHASES STEVENS: 1

They are having like a 2 minute back and forth forearm sequence. You have 10 total minutes this might not be the best use of your time. Gargano finally hits a big kick and goes for a dive. Chase dives back in the ring but Gargano lands on the apron as Chase charges he hits him with a sick spear and the old superkick while your opponent is on his knees. 5:33 to go.

SCORE: JOHNNY GARGANO: 2 CHASES STEVENS: 1

Crowd getting behind Stevens to make the comeback, but after a series of counters Gargano grabs him in a full nelson and nails a twisting face buster out of it to take a 3-1 lead with 4 to go.

SCORE: JOHNNY GARGANO: 3 CHASES STEVENS: 1

Stevens recovers enough to hit the Attitude Adjustment the fans know that is a fall. Cena Fu is strong.

SCORE: JOHNNY GARGANO: 3 CHASES STEVENS: 2

Chase stays all over Gargano and kills him with a brainbuster to tie it up again.

SCORE: JOHNNY GARGANO: 3 CHASES STEVENS: 3

Two minute warning and Gargano looks out of it from the brainbuster. Chase goes right for another fall but Gargano has enough to kick out. Chase goes up and gets cut off. They battle and Chase sends Gargano crashing below and hits a Frog Splash. Chase is hurt after the move and loses time before going for two covers. The lapse of time allows Gargano to survive. With 12 seconds to go Chase goes for another brainbuster, but Gargano counters with a few knees to the head and scores with the small package to get the win at the buzzer. Really good! It was the high scoring game you see in all sports every once in awhile.

FINAL SCORE: JOHNNY GARGANO: 4 CHASES STEVENS: 3

Respect hug after the match from both guys. Crowd gives both guys a standing O and chants “That was awesome!” Gargano is soaking in well deserved cheers. Gargano puts over Stevens as a great wrestler and the crowd chants for Maria. Gargano gives them what they want and asks Maria to come out. Great crowd, guy just busted his ass and they chant for the hot chick.

Gargano is having a lot of fun with it. He does the nWo survey asking “Who thinks Maria is a beautiful young woman?” and “Who thinks Johnny Gargano is a beautiful young man?” Gargano puts over the fans as the MVP for being vocal and wishes everybody a good night on behalf of Maria and himself. Fun ending to the show.

All in all another very positive experience from Wrestling Cares Association. When the round one DVD is released I highly recommend a buy and if you are in LA for SummerSlam weekend go out of your way to check out the next show.

That wraps it up from Gardena. I want to put over Mike Johnson for doing this at some many live shows. It is freakin’ hard! I get it now! See you all next time and if you’re interested you can follow me on Twitter @MikeEpsenhart is the handle. Good night!

2013 - WWC ran their Summer Madness iPPV.  Jose Perez filed the following report:

WWC’s “Summer Madness 2013” was held last night at the “Hector Sola Bezares Coliseum” in Caguas, PR.  In front of a packed arena, with estimates of over 8,500 fans in attendance, the company put up a strong effort with this event.  Good, entertaining matches for which the crowd was hot all throughout the evening.

This show had a “throw-back” feel to it, and for very good reason.  The main event of the evening was between two legends of professional wrestling in the Puerto Rico scene: Carlos Colon Sr. vs. Invader #1.

I went to the arena to with the intention of attending the event live.  However, when I arrived, the line to purchase tickets was long enough that it went around the building with approximately 1,800 waiting.  I have not seen this type of turnout and excitement for a WWC event in close to a decade.  I actually returned home to watch the show on iPPV.  Here are the results from the show:

*WWC Jr. Heavyweight Title - Battle Royal:  AJ Castillo became the new champion after defeating “Diabólico”, Barrabas Jr., Steve Joel, Zcion RT1, Jay Velez and the returning Ricochet.

*Xix Xavant defeated “Cuban Assassin” Fidel Sierra w/ Fantasy

*WWC Universal Heavyweight Title Match: Chris Angel retained the Universal title after defeating Kenny Dykstra

*WWC Puerto Rico Heavyweight Title Match: “El Chico Ilegal” Chicano retained the PR title after defeating Bronco #1

*WWC World Tag Team Title – Triple Threat Match: Sons of Samoa became the new Tag Team champions after defeating the teams of Thunder & Lightning and Andy Leavine & Samson Walker

*Retirement vs Mask/Hair Match: “Super Fenix” w/ Orlando Toledo defeated “Mr. Ray-tings” Ray Gonzalez.  In my humble opinion this was the match of the evening.  Both men worked really hard and had the crowd eating every move they made.  The false finishes in this one were so well executed that even the an experienced referee like “Pelayito” Vazquez found himself confused at two different points in the latter stages of the match.  Gonzalez looked shocked while sitting in the ring after the match.  There was a complete silence in the arena for a few minutes until Gonzalez stood up and started took a bow in the middle of the ring.  At that point the crowd gave him a huge ovation.  Lightning and Chicano came out to the ring and hugged Gonzalez in the ring.  Gonzalez, with tears in his eyes, then went around the ringside area shaking hands with the fans.  When he got to the entrance way he turned to say thank you to the fans once again and then disappeared through the curtains.  There were a lot of fans that were very moved by what happened and were crying.  It was a very surreal moment.

*“El Boricua Mayor” Savio Vega defeated Carlito Caribbean Cool.  Solid match put together by these two.  Towards the end of the match Carlito took a bite of the apple and went to spit it on Vega, but he ducked.  Vega immediately went for the “green mist” and this time Carlito ducked.  Vega went to the opposite corner.  Carlito then charged towards the corner, Vega moved and Carlito went shoulder first into the ringpost, only for Vega to get him in a roll-up from behind for the 3 count.  Fans were on their feet for the last few minutes of the match.  After a few minutes Carlito extended his hand to Vega.  They shook hands and then Carlito low-blowed Vega.  After that he grabbed a steel chair and punded on Vega several times.  AJ Castillo and Jay Velez came out for the save only to eat a “back-stabber” each.  Carlito took another bite of the apple; he then threw it to the crowd and spit the rest on Savio Vega’s face.  As he made his way out of the ring, the fan who caught the apple threw it back at Carlito, with him reacting by smiling at them and then leaving to the back.

*For WWC Control – Legends Match: “El acróbata de Puerto Rico” Carlos Colon Sr. defeated “The Puertorican Dream” Invader #1 via pinfall in yet another controversial finish.  Taking into consideration that this was a match between two legends well over 65 years old, it was and good match for what it was.  At one point during the match Invader left the ring and went to the back and came back with two guys carrying a large plywood covered in barbwire.  He placed it in one of the corners of the ring, intending to send Colon Sr. into it.  However, Colon reversed and it was Invader who ended up tangled in the barbwire.  Colon then went for the figure 4 while Invader was still tangled up in the wire, but he grabbed the bottom rope forcing Colon to let go of the hold.  The ref then helped Invader get out of the barbwire to continue the match.  They went back and forth and the crowd was into every shot and every move they made.  Crowd was on their feet for the duration of the entire match.  The finish came with Invader going for the “heart punch”, but Colon turned and received it on his back.  The force of the “punch” pushed Colon into the turnbuckle, then landing flat on his back.  Invader took advantage of this and went for the cover with his feet up in the ropes.  The ref counted the 1-2-3 and declared Invader the winner.  Out came Stacy Colon as well as the members of the PR Wrestling Commission and told the ref that he had to re-start the match because of what Invader did.  The ref called for the bell and the match re-started.  Invader went after Stacy Colon and grabbed her by the hair.  Colon Sr. recovered and gave Invader a “back-stabber” (…well he tried and it looked similar to it…) and covered him for the win.  After the match Invader told Stacy to be careful because he will be looking for revenge and will come after her.  Colon Sr. then took the mic and told Invader that to get to her he will need to go through him.

As I mentioned earlier, overall it was a really good and entertaining show.  There were some booking decisions that were a bit questionable, but we will have to see where they decide to take the stories.  Congratulations to WWC and their team on the success of this event.  Now we start the build up towards the “Aniversario 40” event, which is scheduled for September.  The following are some notes and comments about the event:

The iPPV stream was sharp and crisp all throughout the show.  Suggestions would be to set up the hard camera in a straight angle in order to get a better view of the action in the whole ring.  Also, I did not need to see the announcers drinking beer while commenting the matches and did not care for “The Wizard” cursing all throughout the show.  I am not a prude by any means, but that kind of language when it is overdone takes away from what is happening in the ring.

Awesome crowd!  Very close to selling out the building.  However, when a fan pays for general admission, they should be seated in general admission.  Around 8:45PM when WWC looked at the long line of people outside, they decided to start pushing people that were inside the building from the general admission areas to the numbered seating area.  Not fair for those that paid the $15 to be seated there and then had to deal with people that paid $10 having the same seats.  I understand that the $15 tickets were not moving, and that is why they made the decision, but why not go back to the fans that did buy those tickets and refund the $5 difference as a token of good faith?  Just saying…

QUICK NOTE:  I wanted to take a quick moment to apologize for the weekly column, “Isle of Puerto Rico”, not being published in the last couple of weeks.  Unfortunately I have been out of the country and doing some traveling for work and have not been able to get the time to type up the columns.  I have already started working on this week’s and should have it ready for sometime mid-week with tons of information about “WWL’s Dream Matches Tour”, WWC en route to Aniversario 40, NBPW debut event results and much much more…
