11/30 THIS DAY IN HISTORY

By Mike Johnson on 2013-11-30 08:00:00

November 30th

On this day in history in ....

1948 - Antonio Rocca defeats Danny McShain in Dallas, Texas to win the NWA Texas Heavyweight Title, ending McShain's second reign and starting his own second run with the belt.

1979 - Bruiser Brody defeats The Spoiler in Houston, Texas for the NWA American Heavyweight Title. With this win, Brody became a four-time champion, while ending Spoiler's fifth reign.

1997 - ECW held their third Pay-per-view event, the November To Remember, at the Golden Dome in Monaca, Pennsylvania, drawing 4,634 fans (at the time, the biggest crowd in ECW history). This was the first time the November To Remember was on Pay-per-view, and this was also the first time ECW held their flagship event outside of the ECW Arena.
Here are the results from the show:
- In a dark match, Chris Chetti & Spike Dudley defeated Erin O'Grady & Paul Diamond when Dudley pinned O'Grady.
- Chris Candido vs. Tommy Rogers became a tag team match when Lance Storm and Jerry Lynn interfered.
- Chris Candido & Lance Storm defeated Tommy Rogers & Jerry Lynn when Candido pinned Rogers with a Northern Lights Suplex.
- Mikey Whipwreck defeated Justin Credible with a Whippersnapper off the ropes.
- Al Snow did a backstage interview, introducing the "Head" gimmick on PPV.
- ECW World Television Champion Taz defeated Pitbull #2 in under two minutes with the Tazmission. After the match, Brakkus came in to confront Taz, and as security held them apart, Taz knocked out a security guard.
- ECW World Tag Team Champions The FBI (Little Guido & Tracey Smothers) defeated The Dudleys (Buh Buh Ray & D-Von), Balls Mahoney & Axl Rotten, and New Jack & Kronus in a Four Way Dance.
* Buh Buh pinned Kronus.
* Rotten pinned D-Von.
* Guido pinned Mahoney.
- Tommy Dreamer vs. Rob Van Dam in a Flag match ended in a no-contest. Dreamer was representing ECW, while Van Dam was representing (in storyline) WWF. After interference from Doug Furnas, Phil LaFon, Bill Alfonso, Sabu and a returning Stevie Richards, Van Dam "pinned" Dreamer with Furnas counting the cover. All the referees had been knocked out.
- Sabu defeated The Sandman in a Table and Ladders match.
- Shane Douglas defeated Bam Bam Bigelow to win the ECW World Heavyweight Title with a belly to belly suplex through a broken table that was set up on a chair. Despite being the heel everywhere else, Douglas was cheered here, due to it being so close to his hometown of Pittsburgh. This win began Shane's fourth, and final ECW Title reign. Only The Sandman (five times) would end up holding the belt more often.

2001 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Yoshinari Ogawa defeat Vader & Scorpio to win the Pro Wrestling Noah Global Honored Crown Tag Team Title in Sapporo, Japan.

2009 - WWE broadcast Raw.  Richard Trionfo filed the following TV report:

We are live from Baltimore, Maryland and your announcers are Michael ‘Vintage Old Bay Seasoning’ Cole and Jerry ‘These are the good type of crabs’ Lawler.

With the smallest guest host, we begin with the biggest man in the WWE, Big Show and he is joined by his tag team partner, Chris Jericho. Jericho talks first and they wanted to clear up some misconceptions. They want to wake everyone up from their ignorant bliss to clear up the fallacy that DX is the greatest tag team of all time. They are not the greatest tag team while the fans cheer them for their childish antics. They are here to deal with the facts and expose DX right now. He points out that they have been champions for four months and have beaten every team that has gotten in their way including Kane and the Undertaker. They won the titles on their first night of existence. Meanwhile, DX have been together since 1997 and have never won the tag titles. Show presents fact number two. He calls them frauds. They might be popular with their merchandise. When it comes to historic wins and sheer dominance, DX cannot compare to them. Show says that when they destroy DX, their merchandise will be useless outdated garbage, just like DX. Fact Number Three. They have 42 championships between themselves. Chris Jericho is the first Undisputed Champion. Show says that he is the only person to be WWE, WCW, and ECW champion.

Jericho wants to know if the fans can understand what Show is saying. Jericho says that they cannot be beaten. Nobody can combine their strength, ability, agility, and courageousness. In a normal match, anyone is at a disadvantage, but it goes to a different level when tables, ladders, and chairs get involved. Show says that his fist is a lethal weapon that has put out the greatest in the business. He reminds everyone that his fist has knocked out Triple H and Shawn Michaels. Show says that if he has a chair with him, his fist will be the last thing they see before going into a coma. Fact number four. Degeneration X has never been in a TLC match. They might have dealt with one of the elements at a time, but never with all three at the same time.

Degeneration X comes out to interrupt Jericho and Show without showing the champions any respect. Hunter says that Jericho and Show mentioned a lot of facts, but they forgot to mention that they are boring everyone to death. Hunter says that they might never have been tag team champions but nobody cares about Jericho and Show and they are the champions. Hunter says that they make history. DX has been at the forefront of every revolution in this industry over the last decade. They have amassed an army. The sea of green represents a worldwide army that believes in DX. It is not because of the jokes or the merchandise. It is because they all believe in the same thing. You grab life by the throat and you make it give you what you want. Shawn says that in two weeks in his home town is going to grab life by the throat and make history. They will be in their first TLC match, and they will win the tag titles for the first time. Shawn says that there is a special little bonus and Hunter lets us know that they will get rid of Chris Jericho from Raw. He reminds Jericho that he is on the Smackdown roster and the only reason why he is on Raw is because of the titles.

Jericho says that without him, Raw is nothing. Without him, the ratings go into the toilet and they will only be left with people like DX. Jericho says that they can gloss over it but he knows that it is eating them alive that they are not the champions. Jericho says that DX knows that they are letting their fans down because they are not champions. Jericho says that DX coasts on their reputation.

Hunter says that Jericho makes a lot of interesting points, but all he has to say that two weeks cannot come fast enough for him. He says that Jericho’s time is limited on the show so he wants to make every moment of Jericho’s time on Raw special. Hunter wants to wrestle Jericho tonight. Chris talks to Show and Jericho accepts the challenge. Jericho says that there is one condition. Jericho says that if he loses, he will face DX in a handicap match. If Jericho wins, Hunter will have to face the tag champions. Jericho tells Hunter and Shawn that he has four words for them: “I’m never leaving Raw”

2012 - Thomas Latimer, who worked in WWE developmental as Kenneth Cameron of the Ascension tag team, has been released from the company after being charged with battery of a law enforcement officer and disorderly intoxication in St. Petersburg, FL on 11/22.

Latimer was signed to WWE developmental in January 2010 and had been placed in the Ascension over the summer of 2011. The team was one of the top acts for developmental and had held the FCW Tag Team belts. Since developmental was re-branded as NXT, the team had been regularly featured on TV, including a program against the Usos.

Latimer had previously been arrested in January 2011 for a DUI charge.

2012 - WWE broadcast Smackdown.  Richard Trionfo filed the following TV report:

Tonight on Smackdown, will The Shield continue their attack on the WWE? Will Ryback do something on this week’s show? What will Sheamus do this week to prepare for his World Title Match against Big Show at TLC? It looks like he will be facing Dolph Ziggler.

This week, Smackdown is in Bossier City, Louisiana and your announcers are John ‘Flash Flood’ Layfield and Josh ‘Day After Tomorrow in the Locker Room’ Mathews.

John Cena makes his way to the ring to take the traditional promo segment to start off Smackdown spot.

In case you missed Raw, John Cena faced Dolph Ziggler and John’s knee gave out again. We then saw Vickie Guerrero and AJ Lee get involved. Ziggler fell victim to the Attitude Adjustment and John Cena won the match.

John says that he wants the world to know that this is Smackdown. He says that something seems mysterious. He is John Cena and not one of the regulars on Smackdown. He is excited for the main event on this week’s show. Mr. Money in the Bank Dolph Ziggler will be involved. There is a reason why he is focusing on Dolph Ziggler. It is because Dolph is busy poking fingers into his business.

John says that he is poking his fingers into Dolph’s business tonight. Dolph’s greatest accomplishment is being the World Champion . . . for two minutes. A glorious one hundred twenty seconds. Dolph’s biggest fear, other than everyone finding out that he is a man stuck in a teenage girl’s body, is losing the Money in the Bank briefcase. As that case goes, so does his identity. He hides behind the power of Vickie Guerrero and says that he can hang with the top superstars in the WWE.

On Monday, Dolph got to test that by facing on him Raw. John reminds us that Dolph lost that match. The reason why he is here tonight, it is because Dolph is not in a match, he is in a fight. Dolph will have to survive a match with Sheamus.

Alberto Del Rio’s music plays and he makes his way to the ring. Alberto tells Cena that he shouldn’t be worried about Dolph Ziggler. Cena should be worried about him because this is his house and his show.

Cena says that this is a WWE broadcast so the show belongs to the WWE Universe.

Alberto says that Smackdown is his show and he calls Cena a gringo estupido. Alberto wants to know if he has to remind Cena that he is a former Money in the Bank briefcase holder, or a Royal Rumble winner, or a former two time WWE Champion?

Alberto tells Cena that the last time they met in the ring, he destroyed Cena. Alberto tells Cena to leave his show and his ring . . . right now.

John thinks about it for a moment and he says that he did not forget those things. John does not want to go because he has a match with Alberto Del Rio and it is right now.
