World Wrestling Council (WWC)

Last Saturday evening, WWC celebrated their 40th anniversary with their annual “Aniversario” event.  The following is a quick recap of the results from the show:

-Jay Velez, Sr. C, Zion RT1 & Xix Xavant defeated AJ Castillo, Diabolico, Steve Joel & Syler Andrews.
-Andy Leavine defeated Samson Walker.
-Rikochet retained his WWC Jr. Heavyweight title after defeating Tommy Diablo.
-“Zona 101 – Chicano & Abbad” became the new WWC World Tag Team champions when they defeated Sons of Samoa and Thunder & Lightning in a Triple Threat Match.
-Chris Angel (w/ Jose Chaparro) retained the WWC Universal Heavyweight title by defeating “El Leon” Apolo.
-Carlos Colon Sr. & Stacy Colon defeated Invader #1 & La Tigresa.
-Savio Vega defeated Bronco via DQ after Bronco hit him with a foreign object.
-Rey Fénix defeated Súper Fénix.  Rey Fenix took advantage of this opportunity and reach out, grabbed the mask and pulled it off revealing that it was none other than “The Precious One” Gilbert who had been under the mask all this time.
-Sting defeated Carlito via pinfall.

We filed a full report with all the happenings from the show earlier in the week.

The “Aniversario” show was dedicated this year to the one and only WWE Hall of Famer Pedro Morales.  Morales is the only puertorican wrestler to hold the WWWF (WWE) Title to date.  He was one of the main draws for WWWF at the time (late 1960’s early 1970’s), along with Bruno Sammartino.  He was also the first performer to have held the three major titles in the company: Heavyweight Title, Intercontinental Title and Tag Team Title.  Morales was part of WWC’s first ever “Aniversario” event back in 1983, where he faced none-other than “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

Last Saturday, after intermission during the “Aniversario” show, a tribute video was presented to the crowd, displaying the greatest moments in Pedro Morales career in WWWF, WWF and WWC.  They then announced that unfortunately Morales could not be present due to the advanced state of his Alzheimer decease.  Our best wishes go out to one of the most charismatic performers to ever come out of the “Enchanted Island”.

WWC is going back to their weekly Saturday house show/TV taping schedule starting tonight when they will be at the “Cosme Beitia Salamo Arena” in Cataño, PR.  The following is some of the matches that have been announced for the show:

-Grudge Match – Rey Fenix vs “The Precious One” Gilbert w/ Orlando Toledo
-WWC Universal Title Match – “Tough Man” Andy Levine vs Chris Angel (c) w/ Jose Chaparro
-“Zona 101” – Chicano & Abbad vs Samson Walker & “El Diabolico”
-WWC Jr. Heavyweight Title Match – Rikochet (c) vs A.J. Castillo
Plus 3 more matches…

It appears that they will not be having their annual “Halloween Wrestling Xtravaganza” this month, as on the advertising for tonight’s event they started to promote “CrossFire”, which is normally their November event.

As we mentioned last Sunday, Savio Vega has opted to leave WWC.  “Aniversario” was his last scheduled appearance for the company.  He has been very active in the independent scene in the island over the past 4 or 5 months.  On a personal note, I have to say that it is amazing how WWC and its creative team really did nothing with Vega.  The hottest storyline in years was Carlito/Savio and they decided to kill its momentum by putting them together and then turning Savio face.  They were able to recover some of the initial heat the angle had, only to blow it at “Summer Madness” by having Vega win the match, and then have Carlito beat him down afterwards.  At that point, the story looked to be headed for one of the main events at “Aniversario”, but instead it was never again talked about after the “Madness” event.  Well, now we will not see an actual conclusion to the storyline.

We also mentioned that “Aniversario” was the last scheduled date for the “Sons of Samoa” tag team (Afa Jr. & Lloyd Anoa’i).  Well, it also seems that the tag team of “Thunder & Lightning” will be taking a break from appearing at WWC.  They have scheduled appearances with other independent promotions during the next couple of weeks, but nothing else at the moment.

Speaking of Thunder & Lightning, they have announced the opening of their new wrestling school here in Puerto Rico.

World Wrestling League (WWL)

WWL has announced that they are postponing the “Dream Matches” event in the Dominican Republic.  The event was originally scheduled to take place next Saturday October 5th at the “Carlos ‘Teo’ Cruz Coliseum” in Santo Domingo, DR.

They have also postponed their Puerto Rico event which was scheduled to take place on October 25th in Bayamon, PR.  There’s still talk of having another show in Mexico and in Puerto Rico before the end of the year.

Over the course of the week, WWL’s President & Owner Richard Negrin has been teasing of a big announcement that he has planned in the very near future.  He has stated that it involves just 3 letters and that those 3 letters will “stun everyone in the island, even the haters”.  There is just one set of 3 letters that come to mind which could have that kind of effect locally: I.W.A.  I am only speculating, so we will stay very close to this story and will bring you all the details as soon as they become available.

More Notes and News…

Action Wrestling Associated (AWA-PR) will be presenting an event on Sunday afternoon.  They are calling it “Septiembre Negro” (Black September), which interestingly was the title of WWC September event.  I guess they forgot to trademark the title and now it is being used by this new company.  The event will take place at the “Jose ‘Pepin’ Cestero Arena” in Bayamon - PR, with a bell time of 6:00PM.  Here are some of the matches announced for the show:

-AWAPR Hardcore Title Match - Huracan Castillo vs Destro w/ Maximo
-“La Artilleria Pesada” Thunder & Lightning vs “Fear Inc.” Spectro & ASH
-Lady’s in action – “La Morena” vs Amazona
-Special Challenge Match – Chicky Starr vs A suprise wrestler brought in by Maximo
-Plus 4 more matches…

On Sunday October 13th, there will be a wrestling event taking place in Ponce, PR.  This event will be put together by an array of performers from every company in the island and all the proceeds from this show will be donated to fellow wrestler “Bolo – The Red Bulldog”.  Bolo is in line for a kidney transplant and this will definitely help with all the costs involved with the procedure and treatment.  Scheduled to appear at the event are: Savio Vega, Chicano, Abbad, D-nnis, Noel Rodriguez, Monster Pain, Miguel Perez, Tommy Diablo, Joe Bravo, Amazona, La Morena, Sensacional Carlitos, BJ, Hiram Tua, El Diabolico, A.J. Castillo and more.  The event will take place at the “Salvador Dijols Coliseum”.  Bell time is set for 5:00PM and the general admission ticket for the show has been priced at $5.00.
