THIS DAY IN HISTORY: SHAWN MICHAELS WINS EUROPEAN TITLE ON UK-ONLY PPV

By Buck Woodward on 2010-09-27 08:00:00

September 27th

On this day in history in....

1986 - The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) defeat Eddie Gilbert & Sting to win the UWF World Tag Team Championship for the second time in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

1997 - WWF held their "One Night Only" Pay-per-view. Live at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, England, the event was only available in Europe (and for some reason, parts of Canada). An edited version of the show was offered months later in the U.S. as a discounted PPV. Here are the results:
- Hunter Hearst Helmsley defeated Dude Love (Mick Foley) with a Pedigree.
- Tiger Ali Singh defeated Leif Cassidy (Al Snow) with a top rope bulldog.
- WWF World Tag Team Champions The Headbangers (Mosh & Thrasher) defeated Los Boriquas (Savio Vega & Miguel Perez Jr.) when Mosh pinned Perez with a top rope splash.
- The Patriot defeated Flash Funk (2 Cold Scorpio) with a full nelson slam.
- The Legion Of Doom defeated The Godwinns when Hawk pinned Phineas after the Doomsday Device.
- Vader defeated Owen Hart with a powerslam as Owen jumped off the top rope at him.
- WWF World Heavyweight Champion Bret Hart defeated The Undertaker via DQ after Undertaker hit the referee.
- Shawn Michaels defeated Davey Boy Smith to win the WWF European Heavyweight Title. This marked one of only two occasions where the European Title actually changed hands in Europe (three if you include the initial title tournament). After interference from Rick Rude, Hunter Hearst Helmsely, and Chyna (soon to be known as DX), Michaels worked on Davey Boy's injured leg with a figure four leglock until Davey Boy passed out, and the referee ruled that he couldn't continue. Allegedly, Smith was supposed to go over in this match, and had been doing press in England dedicating the win to his cousin, who was battling cancer, but Michaels pulled a power play the day of the show and changed the result to a win for him.

1994 - A tournament was held in Osaka, Japan for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title, which had been vacated several days earlier when champion Jushin Liger had suffered a broken ankle. Here are the results of the tournament:
First Round:
Norio Honoga defeated Gran Hamada.
Black Tiger (Eddie Guerrero) defeated El Samurai.
Shinjiro Ohtani and Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) received byes to the semifinals.
Semifinals:
- Norio Honaga defeated Shinjiro Ohtani.
- Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) defeated Eddie Guerrero.
Finals:
- Norio Honaga defeated Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title.
