We are sorry to report the passing of former ICW promoter and professional wrestler Angelo Poffo, best known to fans today as the father of Randy Savage and Lanny Poffo.

Lanny Poffo issued a statement on his official website, announcing Poffo had passed away in his sleep overnight.

Poffo, who began wrestling professionally in the 1940s, was involved in an intense promotional war in the Memphis territory against Jerry Lawler and Jerry Jarrett. At the time, Poffo's ICW was headlined by Randy Savage and Lanny Poffo and often issued grandstand challenges to Lawler. When the promotion eventually shut down, Savage vs. Lawler ended up doing huge business for Memphis.

Poffo also held the world sit up record for several years, his total being 6,033 in one sitting. He was honored by WCW by being placed in their Hall of Fame and had also been honored by the Cauliflower Alley Club in the past.

Our deepest condolences to the Poffo family during this sad time.

Thanks to Brian Fritz for sending that along.
