UPDATE ON JOHN CENA'S WWE IN-RING RETURN

By Mike Johnson on 2008-01-28 13:39:00

A few weeks ago here on PWInsider.com, I reported WWE creative was hoping to get word that John Cena would be able to be involved in a physical role at Wrestlemania XXIV.  At the time, I assumed it would be the role of a referee or enforcer, since the belief was that Cena wouldn't be ready to go until April at the earliest after rehabilitating his pectoral tear.

Around the same time, Dave Scherer reported that Cena was ahead of schedule on his rehab of the injury and Cena himself was teasing an early return when he made an appearance on Sky Sports in Great Britain, saying that he felt fine while teasing that "you never know" when asked about a potential return.

From what I understand, once WWE and Cena got word that he was physically cleared to return, they immediately opted to have Cena do an about face and specifically shoot down the reports of a potential early return and Wrestlemania involvement to throw fans off the trail and build to the Royal Rumble surprise.  When Cena claimed he wouldn't be wrestling at Wrestlemania, much less appear on camera recently, he was working.

For those who are wondering about the new WWE Films project "12 Rounds" (and we received a few emails asking if it was a work as well), the project is real as it's applied for permits to film in New Orleans for 4-6 weeks.  The length of the filming time that Cena claimed recently (five months) was greatly exaggerated, again to work people and throw them off the return surprise.  The belief among those I spoke to was that Cena's shooting schedule would enable him to make appearances to build to Wrestlemania, since unlike previous WWE Films shoots, they are filming in the United States as opposed to Australia.

Obviously, it all worked, because Cena's surprise entrance into the Royal Rumble as #30 was a thing of beauty last night.  The live crowd reaction was absolutely insane and it translated as such on the PPV broadcast.
