The 100th edition of JG’s Radio Free Insanity is on the air and available right now at WorldWrestlingInsanity.com (Flash and MP3 download) This week's show features a special look back at the first 100 guests on RFI as well as a special and rare shoot interview with WWE Diva…Mae Young!
The show begins without the normal audio intro. Instead, James Guttman welcomes listeners to the show and explains that this week's episode marks the 100th show. Since the first edition in October 2005 (featuring Tom Prichard and Charlie Haas) to now, Radio Free Insanity has been a place where top names in wrestling could come to speak openly about their careers. All the past interviews are up on ClubWWI.com. As a look back, James put together an audio retrospective to the first 100 guests.
The audio retrospective lasts for over 15 minutes and doesn't even feature everyone. JG says that should give you an idea of how many there really is. All the clips are from interviews currently on ClubWWI.com. In fact, the audio tribute will now be available for free on the main page of ClubWWI as well. With that, Guttman says to put your feet up and take a listen to the RFI 100.
ClubWWI.com Audio features clips and quotes from the Radio Free Insanity appearances of: Charlie Haas, Tom Prichard, Bobby Heenan, Paul Bearer, Tito Santana, Jacques Rougeau, Tammy Sytch, Too Cold Scorpio, Kevin Nash, Ole Anderson, John Heidenreich, Jimmy Hart, Jimmy Valiant, Iron Sheik, Bad News Brown, Jerry Lawler, Vince Russo, Eric Bischoff, Tod Gordon, Nick Bockwinkel, Dory Funk Jr, Diamond Dallas Page, Rob Conway, Sylvain Grenier, Buff Bagwell, Christian Cage, Jazz, Demolition Ax and Smash, Sid Vicious, Koko B. Once the clips end, James talks about the first 100 shows. He speaks about reconnecting Demolition as one of his favorite moments. At the time, JG had numbers for both Bill "Ax" Eadie and Barry "Smash" Darsow. They hadn't spoken in years so James had them both on the same show in separate interviews. At the end, Barry asked Guttman to give Eadie his number. James did just that and the two have been working reunion shows since. JG says he's proud that he could help do that. He also talks about interviewing the late Bad News Brown. Plus, he speaks about how by conducting his interviews in a non-confrontational way, it's allowed guests to be themselves and allowed listeners to know some of the real people behind their controversial names.
With that, Guttman gets ready to cue up this week's exclusive and rare shoot interview. She's WWE's queen of Insanity and she's promised to wrestle on her 100th birthday. What better guest than Mae Young? Mae's ClubWWI.com shoot interview lasted nearly 30 minutes and included talk of the point behind giving birth to Mark Henry's hand, stripping at the Royal Rumble 2000, being put through a table by the Dudleys, getting complimented by Strangler Lewis, and other wrestling achievements. Mae also tells emotional stories about her friend Lillian "Moolah" Ellison and her final moments, plus much more - only on ClubWWI.com.
JG cues up the discussion:
James Guttman welcomes Mae Young to the show and introduces her as his favorite diva. Mae tells James that she's doing fine and it's nice to talk to him. Guttman explains that she's been someone that people followed for years. It must be nice to have so many generations following her.
"My wrestling fans through the years - and I've wrestled since 1939. My first professional match with in 1940 in Charlotte, North Carolina - and I have had wrestling fans throughout the years so I am happy that I've still got good fans. I love the fans because they're the people I love because they enjoy entertainment and that's what I'm there for."
JG brought up Mae's return to WWF a decade ago as part of an angle where she and Moolah faced Jeff Jarrett. Young laughed and said she's known Jeff for years.
"He banged Lil (Moolah) over the head with the guitar and I came into the ring and he put a step over toe hold on me. Yeah, I remember that very well. But WWF, I Started wrestling for Vince McMahon sr. I was one of the first girls to wrestle for Vince McMahon Sr. when he bought the Joe Turner arena in Washington DC. I was one of the first girls. Now how Moolah got started with WWE or WWF, Vince McMahon Sr, he asked me, 'Johnnie Mae, I wanna ask you something. You know Lillian Ellison?' I said, 'Oh yeah. I trained her to wrestle.' He said, 'We she want to come work for me?' I said, 'It would be the best thing you ever did, Vince is to get her.' And that's where she started wrestling….and she'd been wrestling for Vince ever since."
- ClubWWI.com break -
James asks Mae if she can name anyone she wishes she could have wrestled. Maybe someone she never faced or someone that wrestled before or after her time. Young things and gives her shocking answer:
"I tell you what. I have on my 100th birthday, an appointment to wrestle Stephanie McMahon's daughter, Aurora Rose, and that's gonna be my opponent on my 100th birthday….Stephanie has already promised me that I can do that, so I'm gonna do that. I'll be there to it."
Shocked, Guttman says, "wow." He asks Mae when her birthday is and then tells listeners that the date is set. March 12, 2022 - Mae Young vs. 17 year old Aurora Rose Levesque. Young says she's excited because Aurora should have the best training. James says that Vince will be there and still be crazy. Mae replies that Aurora is a beautiful baby and should make a great wrestler. JG then gives her a final chance to speak to her fans.
"Thank you so much throughout the years for being my special friends. Because without you, I couldn't do nothing. You're the one that keeps me in the business and I love all my wrestling fans. All of them. Every one of them."
Remember, Mae's shoot was 27 minutes long on ClubWWI.com and featured a ton more than you heard today including the point behind giving birth to Mark Henry's hand, stripping at the Royal Rumble 2000, being put through a table by the Dudleys, getting complimented by Strangler Lewis, and other wrestling achievements. Mae also tells emotional stories about her friend Lillian "Moolah" Ellison and her final moments, plus much more - only on ClubWWI.com.
