THIS DAY IN HISTORY: THE 'GOLDEN ERA' OF THE FOUR HORSEMEN COMES TO AN END

By Buck Woodward on 2007-09-10 08:00:00
September 10th

On this day in history in ....

1968 - The Spoiler & Gary Hart defeat Fritz Von Erich & Grizzly Smith (father of Jake Roberts) in Dallas, Texas tow in the NWA American Tag Team Title for the third time.

1980 - Harley Race defeats Giant Baba for the NWA World Heavyweight Wrestling Title in Ohtsu, Japan, ending Baba's third, and final, NWA World Heavyweight Title reign after five days. Baba's three title reigns, added together, only equal 19 days. This victory would signal the beginning of Race's fifth title reign.

1983 - Austin Idol defeats Ken Patera in Memphis, Tennessee to win the AWA International Heavyweight Title.

1988 - United States Tag Team Champions The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane) defeat Four Horsemen members Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard for the NWA World Tag Team Title in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ending Anderson & Blanchard's second and final reign as champions in the NWA. This would be the last time Blanchard and Anderson would team together in the NWA, as they were about to leave for the WWF. This was also the end of the "golden era" of the Four Horsemen, in the opinions of many, although Ric Flair and Barry Windham would stay united after their departure. Amazingly, despite their reputation as one of the best tag teams ever, this would be the only time the team of Eaton & Lane would hold the NWA World Tag Team Title.

1990 - Brian Lee & Don Harris defeat Jeff Jarrett & Jeff Gaylord for the USWA Tag Team Title in Memphis, Tennessee to start their second title reign. Harris & Lee had lost the belts to Jarrett & Gaylord in a match where Chuck Casey had to substitute for Don Harris seven days earlier.

1995 - Yoshinari Ogawa defeats Dan Kroffat (aka Phil LaFon) in Tokyo, Japan to win the All-Japan World Junior Heavyweight Title.

2001 - Yoshihiro Tajiri defeats Chris Kanyon for the WCW U.S. Heavyweight Title (part of the WWF at this point) in San Antonio, Texas.
