In a new video podcast discussing his film The Suicide Squad and whether aspects of it are officially canon for the current DC film & TV universe now that Gunn is running DC Studios, James Gunn discussed The Peacemaker character and noted he originally wanted to cast Dave Bautista, who he worked with in Guardians of The Galaxy as the character. Bautista passed as he had offers to make both Army of the Dead and My Spy and financially, he would have made only one third of what he could have made on the other films, which he was shooting back to back. That opened the door for Cena, the number two choice to be cast.
The podcast also featured Cena sending in a video to discuss working with Gunn on the film.
Steve Agee, who starred in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker with Cena noted that at the time, every new project Cena started, he worked on learning a new song on piano so during breaks in filming, Cena was in his trailer practicing on a casio keyboard.
