IF YOU COMPLAINED ABOUT HOW WWE DIDN'T USE ILJA DRAGONUV, THIS IS YOUR MOMENT TO SHOW UP AND SUPPORT HIM

By Mike Johnson on 2026-10-21 08:59:00

For months, the complaints were endless, loud and relentless.  Every time Ilja Dragonuv wasn't utilized by World Wrestling Entertainment, the online discourse was the same - where is he?  Why isn't he being utilized?  Why isn't be on TV?  Why isn't he getting pushed?

The Russian-born German star, 33, has been beloved for his unhinged intensity, stiff striking, and emotionally charged physical storytelling for as long as he's been performing. The "Unbesiegbar" (Unbeatable) Mad Dragon, Dragunov gained international acclaim before signing with WWE, where captured the WWE NXT UK Championship by ending GUNTHER's insane 870-day reign with an instant classic.  He moved to the United States, where he held the WWE NXT title and eventually, the main roster, where he won the WWE United States Championship.  Recognized for his intense in-ring style, marked by his signature Torpedo Moskva flying headbutt and H-Bomb forearm strike, Dragonuv excels at believable, hard-hitting encounters and dramatic, resilient selling that position him as one of the most physical performers in modern professional wrestling.

He was the exact style of performer that Paul Levesque's NXT popularized themselves utilizing, so it was was unthinkable that under Levesque's creative direction that Dragonuv wouldn't be a massive part of WWE, yet it didn't truly happen.  An ACL tear hobbed his momentum for sure, but his return was well received, as was his U.S. title run.  However, once 2026 began, other than being unceremoniously tossed from The Royal Rumble by Brock Lesnar, there was nothing truly memorable for Ilja creatively and then, he chose to exit the company.

The outpouring of shock and anger over the exit was palpable, to the point I even received emailed accusing me of lying when PWInsider.com broke the news of his exit.  No matter how you feel about Dragonuv's run in WWE, the one constant was that die-hard wrestling fans loved his work and loudly complained online when he wasn't utilized in a stronger manner.  If they truly believe WWE whiffed the ball on Dragonuv, those same fans will get the chance to see him step up to bat tonight for All Elite Wrestling on Dynamite.  As famously stated in Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come."  Well, Tony Khan built his ballfield and now Dragonuv has been invited to join the team...but will the fans who championed him and blamed WWE for Dragonuv's main roster run falling flat actually take that negative feedback, flip the hourglass and go cheer on Ilja in his new environment?

If they don't, every single person who lamented that the main roster machine was sanding down Dragonuv's violent edges should be ashamed of themselves.   It was consistently said online that if Dragunov were given twenty minutes without handcuffs, he’d be a top star for WWE.  Whether it was bad creative, bad timing or just a case of two sides not meshing together as well in reality as one would expect, the online audience has consistently pushed that IF Ilja was given the opportunity, he'd destroy the world.  Hell, one can't blame him.  His work in PROGRESS and NXT UK, among other places, was consistently awesome.  So now, when he lands tonight in a promotion that lives and dies on giving talents the chance to go long in the ring and show how consistently awesome they are, will these same fans flock to AEW, invest their time and cheer on Ilja with the same vigor they used to complain before?

One should hope so, especially given Dragonuv will be debuting against Speedball Mike Bailey, pretty much telegraphing that Tony Khan is going to give Dragonuv every chance to unleash himself and go all out from bell to bell, the type of physical performance that fans have been complaining they've been waiting for since Ilja returned from his ACL injury.  In AEW, Dragunov enters an environment practically tailor-made for his style. His intensely physical, chop-heavy, unhinged intensity demands opponents who can mirror that level of sheer, unadulterated violence.  The promotion has a seemingly unending list of wrestlers who can fit perfectly into that style, but the fans who clamored for this need to show up and support Ilja as well.

Pro wrestling fans love the chase and they always want the new star to emerge. It’s easy to play fantasy booker, throw up hashtags, and complain about how underutilized a talent is when they're bound by corporate presentation. But the beauty, and the test, of Ilja's jump to AEW is that the spotlight is bright, the ring work is unvarnished, and the handcuffs are off, a moment where fans can watch the start of his new chapter in real-time.

For fans who have wished for Dragonuv to be used differently or better, this is their moment of wish fulfillment being granted.  But, if they don't show up to support the same talent they endlessly tweeted and complained was trapped in a quagmire, then what was the point of championing him to begin with?    There's zero doubt in my mind that Dragonuv could soon be challenging for the AEW Championship and taking fans on the same sort of adventures they once saw Dragonuv lead them through in NXT UK and elsewhere, but again, tonight is a moment where every fan who pushed for something grander for Dragonuv to show up themselves and support it.

If they don't, then what were these fans fighting for to begin with?
