GREATEST GIMMICK OF ALL TIME, KEITH LEE, THE FINGER POKE OF DOOM, THE BOOGIE KNIGHTS AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2026-10-17 10:00:00

Is Keith Lee still with AEW?

Unless something has privately changed, I believe he is still under contract.

I have been watching a few of The Undertaker's matches from his bad ass era, and the transition seems seamless. Of course it was more of his natural self. Has there ever been another change of character that worked as well?

Not in my mind. While there have been others who have morphed from one persona to another, I don't think there has ever been another performer who was able to regularly evolve and change his work, yet still maintain his level of overall excellence. In my mind, The Undertaker is the greatest gimmick of all time.

I'm watching this Who Killed WCW deal on Vice TV for the first time.  It made me wonder if the Finger Doke of Doom should be blamed more for the death of the company?

The reality is that after that angle, WCW lost a ton of ground. It may not have been the nail in the coffin of the company but for anyone to deny it eroded their ratings terribly is certainly putting their head in the sand. It didn't kill the company, but certainly, it damaged it. What really killed WCW was the AOL-Time Warner merger, but the reality is that had WCW not been damaged so badly by so many factors, including bloated talent contracts, terrible creative and erosion of ratings, someone would have been interested in buying it and perhaps even WWE might have been able to make a go with a relaunch of the brand. THE stench of all the awful things in WCW that took place over the last few years terribly overpowered all the good that had preceeded it.   Did Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan kill the company with the fingerpoke? No, but it did hurt it, just as the exit of The Radicalz did, the turmoil over who was in charge, the insipid booking that destroyed the value of the WCW title, the NWO angle spinning off into oblivion, etc. etc.  It was 10,000 cuts.

There was once talk of a WWE Hall of Fame or something of that nature being built somewhere in Florida. Was that wishful thinking or is there a chance of such a project possibly becoming reality?

The old WWE was absolutely interested in doing it, bu I've never heard much about the TKO version actually wanting to do it.  I am sure if someone paid them a handsome fee to create and house it, WWE would be open to discussions.  The last location I heard was Orlando but that was well over a decade ago.

I seem to remember seeing a tag team that did a Karate Kid Cobra-Kai gimmick when I went to an indy show in New York at the old Elks Lodge. What happened to them?

You are thinking of The Boogie Knights, Danny Drake and Mike Tobin, who were two really nice guys with a good gimmick. Drake was injured badly working for Jersey All Pro and eventually retired. Tobin worked as a single for awhile, most notably the ECWA, but eventually stopped wrestling. I really liked their work and a lot of people forget they were in the first incarnation of Ring of Honor as well.  They were well ahead of their time with the Cobra Kai love as well!

There used to be a handful of Japanese and American photographers ringside at all WWE televised events. I do not see these photographers at WWE events anymore taking photos, was this a conscious decision on WWE's behalf to stop this practice or were there no longer demand for WWE coverage to warrant these photos?

When WWE moved to high definition broadcasting, company officials at the time (we were told Kevin Dunn at the time, but it could have been someone else) felt too many people at ringside would be distracting to fans watching at home, so the photographers are delegated to shooting from the hard camera position in the crowd.
