Hope you’re well and had a smooth trip to Vegas. Some queries following SD:
I did, thanks. Living in two places 2,200 miles apart can be an adventure but this time was very smooth.
Did you like Cody’s sit down with Cole? I thought it was great. They laid great groundwork if they decide to turn him heel, or it could be him just reaffirming his position as a babyface.
I liked Cody’s fire and that he defended his record. The feud has to end with him beating Randy Orton though at this point.
Again, on promos, Damien Priest gave a quick and simple explanation about turning on R. Truth. I thought it had enough meat on it and it was nice to get an immediate follow up for a change. You?
The only issue I had was that I agreed with him so it kind of makes him sympathetic. Not a babyface, but sympathetic. Truth DID put him in a lot of bad situations throughout their run. Priest DID try and break the team up, only for Truth to ignore him. So to me, we have another shades of gray character. Add him to the already long list.
You’ve been discussing Sami Zayn and him being a whiner, and hopefully he won’t/shouldn’t be champ for too long. I was watching some 80’s promos from Ric Flair and Harley Race from their time as NWA champion. Both guys spoke well, and talked about being a standard of excellence in the industry and that the title is the most important thing in all of wrestling. And then I listen to Sami going down the rabbit hole of paranoia backstage. Different eras, I know, but I know which approach I prefer. I think the only guy who really embodies that old school mentality is Gunther, and to lesser extents Cody & Punk.
I don’t have a problem with a whining heel as long as he gets his in the end.
How do you feel about the differences in the presentation of how important the title is over the years?
The business is so much different today than it was back then. It some ways, it’s for the better. In others, it’s not.
How do you feel about all the world title matches they’ve been having on the weekly shows? Is this somewhat desperation booking?
I wouldn’t say desperation. On Raw, Roman pretty much doesn’t want to fight anyone unless he has to. On Smackdown, there are a lot of guys who want the belt. I prefer what they are doing on Fridays.
