From Clash of Clans to casino reels: how WWE is turning its characters into a wider gaming universe in 2026

By Kendall Jenkins on 2026-09-10 12:32:00

In 2025, you wouldn't expect to see Cody Rhodes, Rhea Ripley, The Undertaker, and others in medieval fantasies, let alone as warriors in the video game, Clash of Clans. Rhodes, who is actually among the world’s top 10% of Clash of Clans players and goes by the name OverlordRhodes, surprised no one when he was cast as the Barbarian King in the first collaboration. Ripley was cast as the Archer Queen, with The Undertaker as the Grand Warden and Bianca Belair as the Royal Champion. The next collaboration added more actors to the cast, keeping Rhodes as the Barbarian King, and adding Alexa Bliss as the Archer Queen, IYO SKY as the Royal Champion, Jey Uso as the Minion Prince, and Kane as the Dragon Duke. To add to the story, they introduced a quest to find John Cena's secret base. Both collaborations are unique and entertaining, but what makes them interesting is how a character's identity travels. When thinking about Cody Rhodes, how does he keep his identity in a different game format, let alone in a different game where his character is swapped out for a skin?

Heroes in Disguise: How WWE Superstars Became Clash of Clans Legends

Ontario is a good example because its regulated online casino market is at an intersection that WWE’s gaming expansion is actively entering. With Supercell’s Clash of Clans, the crossover was based on legitimate character logic. Rhodes’s character as the Barbarian King works because the role fits him, not simply because his face appears on the loading screen. The same thing is true for the better WWE casino games. When a wrestling personality is visually and narratively cohesive to the extent that designers can translate them into casino game symbols, bonus triggers, and a progression arc, something tangible is brought into the slot game. Canadian wrestling fans who want to play these kinds of games can do so at Swiper casino, which is a new casino located in Ontario and is only available to Ontarians. Its game selection spans slots, live casino, and table games, which means the WWE-themed reel experiences that anchor this piece sit alongside the full range of formats a casino player actually wants.

The first collaboration launched in April 2025 to coincide with WrestleMania 41 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Role assignments were intentional. As the Barbarian King, Rhodes leads his village’s ground troops and charges with authority. He also carries a swagger that aligns with the confidence Rhodes has portrayed throughout his career. The Undertaker as the Grand Warden needed very little creative interpretation. As an ancient, looming presence that empowers surrounding troops, the Grand Warden aligns perfectly with The Undertaker’s character. Ripley’s Archer Queen is fierce and able to disappear from a fight and reappear elsewhere, both of which reflect Ripley’s in-ring style and ability to surprise. Belair as the Royal Champion, a character defined by speed and athletic spectacle, was an obvious choice once revealed.

The second wave, which is happening in September 2026, focuses more on narrative. Supercell has built an actual story around Cody Rhodes hunting John Cena’s hidden village, told through daily raids in the game. Players can unlock a Cody Rhodes statue for their village by raiding Cena’s village successfully. Unlike rewards that arrive in a single moment, the statue is tied to continued play through repeated raids. There are other details in this wave worth mentioning, such as Kane’s change from P.E.K.K.A. to Dragon Duke. The designers of the game deepened their collaboration, and Kane is a character who benefits from a mythological frame, while IYO SKY as the Royal Champion is another great addition to the game.

What Clash of Clans does with these personalities deserves a deeper look. The game bridges the gap between a wrestler’s real-life persona and a Hero’s fictional role by using visuals, in-game dialogue, and behavior during a raid. Items from WWE chests in the second event give players a Cody Rhodes skin and some Action Figure Equipment, so the crossover rewards let players customize their experience long after the event.

From Strategy Map to Spinning Reels: What Survives The Format Shift

Mechanically, slot machines and village builders have very little in common. One requires the use of resources, planning, and the ability to make decisions at strategic moments in time. The other can be used to resolve a challenge in a matter of seconds. Designing a system that can bridge this gap requires thinking at a different level of abstraction, one that goes beyond the mechanics of the system to what exactly defines a character’s identity.

Clash of Clans provides a good answer to this question. Each of the WWE Superstars was given a Hero role that represented their character logic, and then a design change that kept the most important elements of the character. Rhodes, for example, was designed in white and gold attire with a layer of chain mail. The Dead Man’s Grand Warden design maintains a similar sense of gravity to The Undertaker’s gothic entrance gear. The design for the Hero role and the Grand Warden’s ability to make surrounding units invulnerable for a short time represent the Undertaker’s role in a match as an immovable, supernatural presence.

Designing slots presents a unique set of limitations compared to other casino games. The design of a slot game encompasses a visual language made up of symbols, colors, animation, and the order in which bonus features are presented. When translating a wrestling personality into a language of symbols, a lot of information is lost. When designing a slot, the focus is on what elements of a personality will be represented symbolically and what will be left out. For The Undertaker, elements such as his choice of colors, his deliberate movement, the sound of a bell, and his entrance with the lights going out are all representationally important, while his headstone is decorative. A slot which incorporates a lot of headstones and lightning bolts but fails to capture the rhythm of The Undertaker has missed the mark.

WrestleMania: Road to Gold captures this concept as well. Including Michael Cole in the game allows for his ringside commentary, which elevates the game above other branded WWE content. The structure of the game, which has the player work through SummerSlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and Money in the Bank before reaching WrestleMania, covers the actual WWE calendar. As a result, players who have some knowledge of the WWE feel they are making progress through a recognizable sequence, as opposed to an arbitrary bonus mode.

Design grammar of a WWE slot: signature moves and wild symbols

Examining the design choices that incorporate character identities into casino mechanics sheds light on why some licensed slots feel like an actual extension of the property, while others feel like a skin on a generic slot machine.

In the case of the WWE slot, WrestleMania: Road to Gold, I will focus on three key design choices: the use of Cody Rhodes’ entrance music, the inclusion of Rhodes’ signature move, and the use of a wild symbol featuring Rhodes’ face.

Rhodes’ entrance music is immediately recognizable to WWE fans. During a bonus round in the slot, if Rhodes’ entrance music plays to signal the bonus round, a generic fanfare would not evoke the same level of fandom as his music. His music is tied to numerous emotional moments. Rhodes’ return at WrestleMania 38, the crowd response, and his subsequent title runs are just a few examples of what his music is tied to, and it evokes a strong emotional response. A design choice using a symbol to represent Rhodes would not be as effective as using his music.

Using Rhodes’ signature move, the Cross Rhodes, as a wild symbol in a slot is an even higher-fidelity design choice. Drama is associated with a signature move, and the audience is familiar with the reaction the move would evoke. Using the move as a wild symbol can be a design choice to create a high-value bonus round and borrow dramatic tension for a slot machine.

The Unlock Trail mechanic in WrestleMania: Road to Gold provides something unique: a gradual character development process that culminates in a narrative conclusion. In this game, players participate in a series of WWE events and, in the process, unlock special features. The structure of the game provides a journey that most slot games fail to include. The majority of slot games treat each spin as a distinct, isolated event. A progressive system changes that. It gives the player a place in the experience as opposed to a running total.

The inclusion of Rhodes and Ripley, alongside the other 18 WWE Superstars, provides a representation of the WWE roster that goes beyond the top few Superstars. Providing that roster depth is important for the game's players whose interests go beyond the two or three most popular Superstars at that given time.

Other WWE gaming opportunities beyond the slots

The most recognizable parts of WWE's intentional character-extension strategy are the casino slot releases and the Clash of Clans crossover. WWE programming reaches more than one billion households, and Clash of Clans has surpassed two billion lifetime downloads. There is a significant overlap between those audiences, and the crossover was a serious treatment of that audience rather than a short-term promotion.

TKO Group Holdings, WWE's parent company, granted Fanatics Betting and Gaming an exclusive license to create WWE-themed casino games for a set period starting in July 2025. The first set of games included WWE Blackjack, Raw Multiplier Melee, SmackDown Big Money Entrance!, WWE Bonus Rumble Gold Blitz, and WWE Clash of the Wilds. Fanatics Game Studios, in partnership with Boom Entertainment and Games Global, produced the games. The deliberate range in the first set of games includes a table game and a variety of slot games, and presumably, the intention is to cover a wide range of player preferences within the same licensed universe rather than concentrate everything in a single format.

WrestleMania: Road to Gold is the most notable game in the catalog for its design and structure. Of all the WWE-themed casino games produced for the online market, it is the most comprehensive in terms of cast, events, and broadcast-style presentation. Its design is a direct result of the character-fidelity principles that Supercell employed in their collaboration with WWE for Clash of Clans.

All of these gaming formats employ the same core principle. WWE has a roster of personalities whose identities are fully formed, visually distinct, and emotionally resonant with a wide audience. Any game studio, whether it develops for mobile, casino, console, or another format, has the same challenge; it identifies the character's essential signals and incorporates them into the game in a way that is instantly recognizable to the fans.

Character identity as the connective tissue

The example of the Clash of Clans crossover event illustrates something that is also true for the casino adaptations: a licensed character's strength is determined by the logic of their placement. In the case of Rhodes as the Barbarian King, the design team was able to place Rhodes in a role that aligned with the Hero's in-game function, and then created consistency in both the visuals and the character's AI behavior.

Design for casino games amplifies both sides of this equation. A slot that captures a wrestler's entrance music, finishing move logic, and a color palette that represents their personality gives fans something they can interact with and feel familiar with, from the very first spin.

The WWE gaming expansion that runs from 2025 to 2026 indicates that the company has indeed understood this. The collaboration with Supercell also respected this by assigning roles to characters based on their identities, rather than based on their billings. The Fanatics partnership incorporated a wide variety of game formats, as well as a great deal of structural creativity. The same principle that makes Cody Rhodes feel like Cody Rhodes in a fantasy village-building game is the same principle that makes him feel like Cody Rhodes when a slot's bonus is triggered. The format can change as much as you want, but the method remains the same.
