AEW Dynamite is live from the Akins Ford Arena in Athens, GA. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone.
We start with a graphic remembering The Butcher, Andy Williams, who passed away over the weekend.
This is a special Episode of Dynamite, the Rebel Heart episode to honor Rebel, who has been diagnosed with ALS.
We start with Britt Baker’s segment “The Waiting Room,” where she is going to speak to Rebel, who she still misnames as Reba. Baker says that Reba’s fight has inspired all of them, and Rebel says, “You know it’s Rebel,” and Baker says, “You’re right, it’s AEW Rebel Heart”. Persephone is brought out. Persephone says she is thankful that Baker helped her save the women’s division and talks about the trio's match later tonight. Hikaru Shida joins and says she used to hate Baker, but now she hates Maya World even more.
Rebel sees that Baker has left without her glove.
Swerve Strickland and the New Level (Austin Creed and Kofi) AEW Trios Champions w/Prince Nana vs The Conglomeration (Orange Cassidy, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong)
Kofi and Cassidy start the match, and quickly go to waistlocks and arm bars. They run the ropes, and Kofi gets a shoulder tackle takedown. Cassidy gets a headlock takeover into a crucifix pin for two. Kofi goes for a leg sweep, and Cassidy lifts his leg to avoid it three times. Kyle and Austin tag in, and Kyle gets a lockup with a kick. Austin kicks back, and they go back and forth with kicks. Austin grabs Kyle's leg and trips him into a chop in the ropes. Austin runs the ropes and hits an elbow strike after sliding through Kyle’s leg. Kofi tags in and Kofi is dropped on Austin. Roddy gets into the ring and uses Cassidy as a battering ram on the New Level.
Roddy tags in right after Kyle tags in, and they double-team Kofi as we go to picture-in-picture.
When we return to full screen, Austin has been the babyface in peril through the break. Austin is able to get a suplex on Kyle and makes it to the corner to tag in Kofi, who cleans house. Kofi ends the sequence with an escalera onto Roddy for two. Kofi then hits a Boom Drop. Roddy catches Kofi’s spin kick and hits a back breaker. Swerve is tagged in, and Swerve gets out of a back breaker. Roddy catapults Swerve over the top, but Swerve catches Roddy and drags him to the apron and drapes him as the New Level leap on him.
Roddy is rolled into the ring, and Austin gets an elbow drop for two, broken up by Cassidy. Cassidy tags in and Kofi gets a leaping slam. The New Level hit a series of quick attacks on Cassidy. Thai brings everyone into the ring, and the sequence ends with Austin holding Kyle for Kofi to get a leg drop, followed by Austin hitting a German suplex.
Cassidy and Swerve are left together in the ring. Cassidy hits a dropkick on Swerve. The New Level picks up Cassidy, who is able to get a double headlock by putting his hands in his pockets. Cassidy gets soft kicks on Swerve, and when New Level tries for a power slam, Cassidy turns it into a tejaris on Swerve. Cassidy drop-kicks New Level to the floor and then dives into a DDT on Swerve on the floor.
Lots of dives from everyone here. Kofi leaps over the post onto Kyle and Roddy. Cassidy and Kofi are in the ring, and Kofi catches Cassidy, who was trying to get a DDT. Swerve gets a running kick, and the New Level hits Daybreak on Cassidy for the pin and the win.
Winners and still AEW Trios Champions: Swerve Strickland and New Level.
After the match, The Demand and The Lethal Swirl come to the stage, and Ricochet says that they are owed a rematch. He then asks why Kofi and Austin are rookies who walk into the company and get handed opportunities. Ricochet says they will come to the ring and escort everyone else out themselves.
Swerve and Kofi hold the ring, and Brody King, Bandido, and Adam Page run to the ring to even the odds, driving off the Demand and the Lethal Swirl.
After they leave, Page’s team has the trios titles, and they hand them back, with Page and Swerve taking their time to do so.
In the back, Steven Borden talks about his decision to get into wrestling and how he called Darby Allin to train him. Darby says the Don Callis family thinks he’s not ready, and he’s not the second coming of Sting; he’s the first Steven Borden.
Excalibur and the announce team talk about the passing of Butcher, Andy Williams. Excalibur gets choked up as he reads his tribute.
In the back, Renee Paquette is with the Don Callis Family. Josh Alexander says they have something to prove against Steven Borden. Callis then says he loves seeing a tag team work well together, as he points to Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight, and Kyle says he was surprised they are working together well. Kazuickia Okada then tells Kyle he is glad he sees the value of family.
Maya World, Hyan, and Thunder Rosa vs. Britt Baker, Persephone, and Hikaru Shida.
Baker and Rosa start the match, and Baker backs to the corner and tags in Persephone. Rosa gets a shoulder tackle and then does it again. Persephone catches her, runs Rosa into the corner, and throws hands. Rosa leaps over Persephone and gets a backslide for two. Hyan and Maya get quick tags and drop onto Persephone for two. Persephone fights out of a fireman’s carry from Hyan, and Persephone gets a power slam for two.
Shida tags in and Hyan catches Shida’s kick. Hyan gets a snake eye on Shida on the top turnbuckle. Maya gets a cannonball and then a moonsault from the top for two.
Shida goes for Maya’s eyes. Maya is whipped to the ropes where Baker gets a knee to her back, and Shida gets an insigiri as we go to picture-in-picture.
When we return to full screen, Maya has been the babyface in peril through the break. Maya is able to leap over Persephone and tags in Rosa, who runs wild. Baker hits Rosa from behind, and Rosa does the “slowly I turn,” but Shida and Persephone grab Rosa to keep them apart. Maya tags in and is able to get a pin on Persephone, but it is broken up by Baker. Hyan is attacked by each of Baker’s team, stopped by Maya and Rosa. Rosa chases Baker around the ring, and Persephone is able to get a spear on Rosa.
Maya dives onto Persephone, and Shida stops her with a knee strike. Rebelk comes to the ring with her wheelchair to pass Baker her glove. Baker goes for Hyan, who gets a rollup for two. Baker gets a thrust kick and goes for the lockjaw, and Hyan has to tap out.
Winners: Britt Baker, Persephone, and Hikaru Shida.
The crowd cheers for Rebel as Baker gets on Rebel's lap and they head to the back.
We then get a video package about Rebel and her fight with ALS.
Andrade El Idolo (AEW National Champion) vs Mortos
They trade shoulder tackles and tejaris attacks. Andrade sends Mortos to the floor and gets a diving hurricanrana from the ring to the floor. Andrade takes his selfie, and they return to the ring. Mortos is able to grab Andrade for a backbreaker, sending Andrade to the floor. Mortos gets a tornado through the ropes into Andrade as we go to picture-in-picture.
When we return to full screen, Andrade gets a running clothesline and then a running elbow strike. Andrade has time to take off his pants, but when he charges at Mortos, Mortos gets a pop-up Samoan drop for two. Mortos gets a waistlock, and Andrade fights free. Andrade charges into Mortos in the corner, and as Andrade is able to do a headstone on top, when he comes down, Mortos gets a lungblower for two.
Mortos gets a pop-up electric chair, but Andrade is able to get the cover for two. Andrade gets the Dios de las Muertes, followed by the DM for the pin and the win.
Winner and still AEW National Champion: Andrade El Idolo
Andrade reminds us he will be defending his title every week, and he is the real Latino man. He asks How you know.
He is then attacked by The Dogs, and Kidd says, “How you know? Because we are always one step ahead of you, idiot. “
Will Ospreay heads to the ring for the save. And dumps each member of the Dog to the floor. Will helps Andrade up, and Jon Moxley is on his way to the ring with Marina Shafir. Kidd offers a chair to Mox, and Mox instead goes to the commentary desk.
Will Ospreay (AEW World Champion) vs Davis Finlay - Eliminator match
Will gets a kick as Finlay charges into him. Finlay tosses Will to the corner. Will fights his way out of the corner, and they go back and forth. Finlay gets a body slam and a running uppercut in the corner. Finlay tosses Will and gets an elbow to Will’s back. Will gets ten in the corner after reversing a charge in the corner. Finlay gets a big strike on Will and then rips at his face in the ropes. Finlay stomps down Will in the corner and then gets ten in the corner himself.
Will gets a big chop, and Finlay fires back. Will gets a big back body drop and then clotheslines him to the floor. Will gets a dive onto Final on the floor and glares at Mox as we go to picture-in-picture.
When we return to full screen, Finlay gets a cross chop to Will’s throat. Will gets a boot up in the corner when Finlay charges at him and then gets a springboard clothesline. Will gets a series of strikes and a corkscrew kick for two. Will gets a series of upkicks to Finlay’s head. They throw hands back and forth. Will gets a pair of kicks to Finlay, and Finlay gets a back breaker for two. Will gets a rear kick and a pop up power bomb for two.
Will signals for a hidden blade, and Finlay rolls to the apron. Finlay gets a strike and then gets a running lariat for two. Will reverses a power bomb for two. Will gets an Oz Cutter for two. Will charges and Finlay reverses it into a back slide. Will gets a Stundog Millionaire and follows with a Styles Clash for the pin and the win.
Winner: Will Ospreay
In the back, Renee is with Adam Page and Brodido, and Brody asks if they are still in the hunt for the Trios titles. Page says he helped them in a fight, and he didn’t anticipate winning the title. He says he needs their friendship, and they are still a trio.
Josh Alexander and Mark Davis vs Darby Allin and Steven Borden
Don Callis joins commentary
Darby and Davis start the match, and Davis calls for Borden to get in the ring, and Borden obliges him. They throw chops, and Davis gets a side headlock. They run the ropes, and Borden gets a strike, and then an arm drag. Borden holds the arm bar, and Davis works to his feet. Borden gets a side headlock and Darby tags in. Darby grabs the side headlock and then they ping-pong Davis between Darby and Borden. Darby gets a backspring off the ropes into Davis.
Josh tags in and gets a chop block on Darby. Josh then gets a senton as we go to picture-in-picture.
When we return to full screen, Darby has been the babyface in peril. Darby is able to get an inside cradle on Davis and then avoids a senton. Josh is tagged in, and Darby dropkicks him. Darby crawls to his corner for the tag, but Davis pulls Borden off the apron and runs him into the barricade. Josh and Davis go back to working over Darby. Darby is knocked into his own corner, and Borden gets the hot tag.
Borden runs wild, fighting off both Josh and Davis until Davis is able to get a series of chops in the corner. Borden drop-kicks Davis, who is on top. Borden goes for a superplex, but Josh breaks it up and slams Borden for two, broken up by Darby. Darby and Josh throw hands, and Josh gets a German suplex on Darby. Borden is able to grab Josh, and Darby gets a coffin drop for the top. Borden covers Josh for the pin and the win.
Winners: Darby Allin and Steven Borden
We get a hype video for Cope and Christian vs the Young Bucks vs FTR in a chairs, tables, and ladders match.
Thekla has a microphone and comes to the stage. She says she doesn’t need a title for a celebration because the party follows her wherever she goes. She didn’t grow up a fangirl; she was a guitar player, and she saw someone getting beat up with a chicken, and she thought she could do that. And she does better than everyone.
Mercedes Mone interrupts her from the crowd and says she has dealt with egos bigger than hers her whole life. Thekla says they can agree that Willow Nightingale is the worst champion of all time, and Willow interrupts both of them. Willow takes the ring, and as Thekla goes to the ramp, Skye Blue and Julia Hart job her as we have a standoff.
In the back, the Death Riders are yelling at Mox for helping Will Ospreay. Will shows up and tells them to leave so he can have a word with Mox. Will says he asked for this match to pay Mox back for helping him. Will says he doesn’t care if the Death Riders second Mox, that they have 60 minutes and not 20, and this time he isn’t coming for revenge. This time he has a plan. He knows how to beat a Death Rider.
Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight vs The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) - Tables match
Everyone is brawling as the bell rings. The Bucks send Knight and Kyle to the floor and then follow up with dives. The Bucks set a table at ringside, and the brawl moved to the table. Kyle and Knight are rolled into the ring, and the Bucks try to suplex them onto the table, but Knight and Kyle suplex the Bucks into the ring. The Bucks grab Kyle and get a two-man suplex on him after Knight is sent to the floor. Knight is on the table, and Kyle pulls him off the table, but Matt dives onto them on the floor
The Bucks set up a table in a corner of the ring. Knight leaps into the ring, and Matt gives him a series of Northern Lights suplexes, but Kyle stops them before they get to the table. They brawl in the ring, and Knight and Kyle are sent to the floor. Nick dives, but they catch him and slam him into the apron. Knight leaps off the top rope over the table into the Buck as we go to picture-in-picture.
When we return to full screen, Knight is set for a coast-to-coast dropkick, but the Bucks slam a table into him as he leaps. Matt hits Kyle with a DDT. Matt gets a senton on Knight as Nick holds him on the second rope. Matt gets a vasadora slam on Kyle. The Bucks drape Kyle on the top rope and get the stomp on Kyle into a slam onto a flat table in the ring. The Bucks set for a Meltzer driver into the table, but Knight breaks it up. Knight and Knight are fighting on top, and Knight gets a hurrinarana front he top, and Matt gets a DDT on Kyle on the apron.
Matt rolls Kyle into the ring, and everyone throws hands in the middle of the ring, and the Bucks get a Meltzer driver on Knight in the ring. Kyle takes the BTE trigger. The Bucks are able to put Knight through a table by getting an assisted slam off the apron into the table. Kyle gets a back body drop that puts Matt through a table. Kyle gets a brain buster on Nick and starts to set up a table in the ring. They fight across the table, and Nick gets a destroyer using the table as a springboard. Nick puts Kyle on the table and then goes to the top.
Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler show and start attacking Nick. Nick fights them off and goes to the top; Stokely grabsNick’s’ leg, and Kyle is able to grab him for a brain buster through the table.
Winners: Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight.
FTR start the post-match beatdown on the Bucks as Knight and Kyle help FTR. Darby Allin and Steven Borden come to the ring for the save. In the ring, the Bucks have words with Darby and Borden, and they then shake hands.
