I happened upon a clip from All In that occurred after Edge & Christian won their match. The ring filled with teams who would be potential challengers going forward. It was a nice array of talent, but a few things really hit me:
None of the teams were AEW homegrown talents; E&C, the former New Day, FTR, MCMG, even the Bucks were over before getting to AEW. It was a cool moment for the fans, but it spoke to me about the company not developing new talent if that is going to be the tag scene going forward.
That’s a legitimate point, for sure. It could also speak to how tag teams are viewed overall by the business since top teams are more expendable than top singles.
The ages of everyone. Now, I'm 56 myself, so I don't want this to come across as ageist. But only 3 of the guys standing out there were under 40 - Austin Creed, Nick Jackson and Cash Wheeler. Everyone else is on their 40's, E & C are in their 50's. This certainly flies in the face of AEW's early narrative about showcasing younger talents.
That narrative, along with rules matter, are long in the rear view mirror from AEW’s beginning days.
And with the former New Day, Tony went right to one of his booking tropes, putting a title on a debuting talent. Now, it is the meaningless Trios titles, but still; 1st night in the company, let's make you a champion.
Here’s the thing to me, in this case I agree with him doing that. The problem lies in the fact that, to your point, he has done it so many times in the past. That is the problem with booking tropes, when they are overused even when it’s the right time to use them they can come across as stale.
I don't get why Oba and Breakker look the next feud. Oba definitely shouldn't be losing and Breakker shouldn't be losing.
I get what you are saying as I have said the same thing leading up to it. Then on Raw, Paul Heyman did a really interesting promo that makes me think they have something planned for tonight that will keep it from being as simple as one man “can’t afford to lose”. We shall see!
