When asked recently whethere would be a third season of Peacemaker on HBO Max with John Cena, DC Studios head James Gunn, who also wrote the first two seasons, responded with a "thinking emjoji."
Today, he then wrote the following potentially teased Cena's return to the character:
For a guy who’s been prioritizing peace since the mid-60s, Peacemaker’s solution to violence tends to be… more violence. It’s quite the layered approach, and no one could bring that mixture of determination, humor, and heart to the screen quite like John Cena.

Cena's portrayal of Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker was the first ever live action incarnation of the character, a soldier and super-hero who loves peace so much he is willing to kill anyone, including innocents, for it. The character was originally created by the now-defunct Charlton Comics but acquired by DC in the mid-80s, mostly as a gift for the legendary Dick Giordano, who had worked on the characters before his incredible run for DC. Peacemaker was the inspiration for Watchmen's The Comedian character as well.
Peacemaker was introduced in the 2021 DC film The Suicide Squad, which was written and directed by James Gunn. Gunn returned to write and direct Peacemaker season one, which explored the character's background and what happens to him after the Suicide Squad film as he attempts to prevent an alien invasion. James Gunn later took over the creative end of DC Studios with the Peacemaker character being folded into the new DCU film and television series. That interconnected universe kicked off with the 2025 Superman film with Gunn writing and directing. That film lead directly into Peacemaker Season Two, where Cena as Peacemaker dealt with the trauma of his life while exploring another dimension that he felt would be a better place for him to stay in. At the end of the second season, Peacemaker was kidnapped and abandoned, defenseless, in a dangerous dimension the United States government had decided to dispose super-powered beings into. With none of his friends knowing the truth of Smith's whereabouts, there was no apparent way for Peacemaker to escape, leaving the character in a massive cliffhanger.
The belief had been that the series would not return for a third season and the character would instead return down the line as part of another DC Studios project. Time will tell where and when Cena returns as Christopher Smith.
