Kerry Morton for BRCW Tag Team Championship One Year After Siding With Steve Maclin
Morton turned on his father to align with the man who took the BRCW Championship. That man is now suspended, and Morton is on Sunday’s card in Boca Raton without him
BOCA RATON, Fla. Kerry Morton and Ben Bishop challenge the Sons of Boca for the BRCW Tag Team Championship at Summer Smash on Sunday, August 16 at The Studio at Mizner Park in Boca Raton, Florida. For Morton, the match closes out a year that began with him choosing Steve Maclin over his own father.
At Summer Smash last August, Maclin defeated Ricky Morton to win the BRCW Championship. In the post-match interview, Kerry Morton stood alongside the new champion rather than his father and told him plainly that he would follow him. Ricky Morton is a WWE Hall of Famer and one half of the Rock ’n’ Roll Express.
The fallout carried across the rest of the year. Father and son met at BRCW November Knockdown on November 2, where Kerry Morton beat Ricky Morton. Maclin held the championship through March, defending it against Matt Taven at Birthday Bash.
Maclin was suspended indefinitely on August 5 and the championship was vacated. He is not on Sunday’s card. Morton is, chasing a different title, with a different partner, and without the man he aligned himself with a year ago.
The champions have their own recent history with the challengers. Cezar Bononi and Noah Kekoa, who compete as the Sons of Boca and are accompanied by Neil the Heel, won the tag titles in November and retained them at BRCW Over The Edge in December. Morton and Bishop were beaten by Fulton and Bull James at Birthday Bash in March, and Bishop defeated Bull James in singles competition in November.
Summer Smash begins at 5:00 PM EDT on Sunday, August 16 at The Studio at Mizner Park, 201 W Plaza Real, Boca Raton. Five championships are featured, including a Fatal Four-Way for the vacated BRCW Championship. Tickets and the full lineup are at bocaratonwrestling.com
