VERNE GAGNE'S 'THE WRESTLER' TO HAVE SPECIAL SCREENING SUMMERSLAM WEEK IN MINNEAPOLIS

By Mike Johnson on 2026-07-16 20:18:00

For those of you in the Minneapolis area or traveling there for WWE Summerslam, there will be a special screening of the 1974 film The Wrestler starring Ed Asner, Verne Gagne and Billy Robinson on Tuesday 7/28 at Mayslack's Bar and Grill, presented by the MSP Film Society.

The screening is especially unique as Mayslack's was the location for the bar fight in the film featuring Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch and we are told the bar is basically the exact same as it appeared in the film.  So, by attending the screening, you are watching the film where it was filmed.

In the flm, wrestling promoter Frank Bass (Verne Gagne) struggles to keep his promotion successful while balancing the demands of the business. As attendance depends on exciting new talent, Bass must recruit fresh stars, manage the personalities of the wrestlers on his roster, and confront the reality that his aging champion, Mike Bullard (Verne Gagne, who produced the film), may no longer be able to carry the company. A promising challenger, Billy Taylor (Bily Robinson) emerges as a challenger,  A subplot includes mobsters trying to intrude into the business, which leads to a number of wrestlers getting involved.  A lot of stars from the AWA appeared in various roles in the film and even Vince McMahon Sr. has a cameo.

Promotional material for the screening:

"Before the world descends on Minneapolis for SummerSlam and WrestleCon, come kick the week off right — with the movie that already made this bar famous.

MSP Film Society and host Chaz Kangas present a one-night screening of THE WRESTLER (1974), starring Ed Asner, Verne Gagne, and Dusty Rhodes, screened inside the same Mayslack's bar where the film's most legendary scene was shot.

Mayslack's has been a Nordeast institution since 1955, founded by real-life pro wrestler "Handsome Stan" Mayslack — so this isn't just a movie playing in a bar, it's a wrestling story playing inside a wrestling story.

Free screening, limited seats. This is not a formal RSVP — doors open early and seating is first-come, first-served, so plan to arrive ahead of 8 PM if you want a seat.

Full bar and kitchen open all night — grab a garlic roast beef sandwich and settle in.

Presented by MSP Film Society (@mspfilmsociety) at The Main Cinema (@themaincinema), hosted by Chaz Kangas (@chazraps).
Use two hands."
