CM PUNK DISCUSSES HIS NEW FITNESS REGIMEN, ASKING AJ TO MARRY HIM, THEPIPEBOMB, RUNNING A MARATHON & MORE ON STEPHANIE MCMAHON PODCAST

By Mike Johnson on 2026-07-13 13:47:00

CM Punk was the guest on the latest episode of Stephanie McMahon's podcast, where the conversation largely avoided wrestling storylines in favor of discussing his personal life, his recent physical transformation, and his outlook on life outside the ring.

The interview opened with Punk reflecting on the loss of his dog Larry. Punk recalled returning to his Chicago home, vacuuming the house, and unexpectedly becoming emotional after emptying the vacuum cleaner and realizing it was filled with Larry's fur. Stephanie McMahon shared a similar experience involving one of her late dogs' belongings, leading to a discussion about grief, memorial keepsakes, and why Punk and his wife, April, have decided not to get another dog anytime soon. Punk admitted he would likely consider another pet someday, but said the loss was simply too difficult for his wife.  Punk explained that after spending years focused on caring for Larry, he and April have finally been able to travel together, recently revisiting Kona, Hawaii, where they originally honeymooned 12 years ago. He described Kona as his favorite place in the world outside of Chicago.

The discussion eventually shifted toward Punk's recent World Heavyweight Championship victory in Chicago. McMahon pointed out the similarities between the championship win and his famous title victory in the same city years earlier. Punk acknowledged how remarkable the parallels were, joking that while people say lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place, sometimes history simply "rhymes."

McMahon referenced online criticism accusing Punk of becoming the very type of veteran he once criticized, including graphics circulating online featuring supposed quotes from Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Logan Paul and others. Punk dismissed the posts entirely, stating they were AI-generated fake quotes that many fans accepted as real. He said misinformation has become a major problem and explained why he abandoned Twitter years ago, adding that he has no interest in trying to change people's minds online. Punk also revealed that he has received FBI notifications regarding online death threats, although authorities generally determine the threats are not considered credible.

They discussed Punk's dramatic physical transformation over the last several months. Punk credited strength and conditioning coach Jay Farrugia, whom he hired six weeks before WrestleMania after seeing results from Chad Gable's training. Rather than chasing a specific weight, Punk said his goal was simply to arrive at WrestleMania looking noticeably different.   To accomplish that, Punk completely changed his approach to nutrition. He began weighing every meal, tracking his macronutrients daily, preparing simple meals consisting largely of lean proteins, rice and vegetables, and sending his weight, body temperature and progress photos to Farrugia every morning for adjustments. Punk described the process as a complete lifestyle change rather than a temporary diet.

Despite the strict routine, Punk emphasized the importance of balance. He admitted he enjoyed birthday dinners with his wife, indulged heavily during a week-long anniversary trip to Hawaii, where he joked he gained roughly 20 pounds, and recently enjoyed an unexpected pizza night after April surprised him with dinner. Each time, he simply returned to his nutrition plan the following day.

Punk also discussed how Farrugia significantly reduced the amount of volume in his gym workouts, something he initially struggled with after years of believing more sets and heavier lifting automatically produced better results. Instead, he now focuses on efficient training, walking at least 10,000 steps per day, structured cardio and recovery. He admitted that while others frequently compliment his physique, he remains his own harshest critic.

The conversation then turned to one of the more memorable stories from Punk's career, as he detailed how he completed the 2011 Chicago Marathon without training before wrestling on Monday Night Raw the following evening.   Punk explained that he originally agreed to run the marathon alongside his sister in honor of her late father, who had helped raise him after he left home as a teenager. However, after unexpectedly re-signing with WWE during the famous "Summer of Punk" storyline, he completely forgot about the commitment until returning home from an appearance at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in Australia the night before the race.

Realizing his sister was staying at his house and expecting him to participate, Punk decided to run despite having done no formal marathon training. After buying bagels, peanut butter and snacks from Walgreens the night before, he entered the race wearing his sister's friend's bib.   Punk said he felt great through the first half of the marathon before severe cramps set in around the midway point. He described the unusually hot October weather turning portions of the race into "a war zone," with runners receiving medical treatment and collapsing from exhaustion. He also shared a story about an emergency stop at a portable restroom late in the race after discovering there was no toilet paper available, forcing him to improvise before finishing the marathon.  Despite the difficult experience, Punk completed the race in just under or slightly over six hours and then wrestled two matches on Raw the following night. Stephanie McMahon looked up the event during the interview, confirming Punk competed in both a singles match against Alberto Del Rio and a tag team match later that evening.

The discussion then shifted to recovery techniques that Punk now relies upon to extend his career. He said he regularly uses ice baths, red light therapy, massage work, stretching and contrast therapy involving alternating between cold plunges and dry saunas. Punk also praised a recovery device known as the Amortal machine, which combines multiple forms of light therapy with oxygen therapy, saying it consistently leaves him feeling refreshed.

McMahon and Punk laughed about how recovery has become increasingly important with age, trading stories about injuries and embarrassing moments that came from everyday activities rather than wrestling itself. Punk joked that he rarely gets hurt performing in the ring but is far more likely to get injured doing something ordinary, pointing to his marathon experience as an example.

Punk what asked what it means to be considered a veteran in professional wrestling. Punk acknowledged that after spending decades in pro wrestling, he understands younger talent may view him that way, but said longevity alone doesn't automatically make someone's opinions more valuable. He added that despite compliments about his current physique, he still tends to be overly critical of himself, joking, "I just think I'm fat," before the conversation transitioned into discussing his career perspective and relationship with Triple H.

Asked what continues to motivate him after everything he has accomplished, Punk said he draws inspiration from the people around him, including his wife April, trainer Jay Farrugia and fellow WWE performers. Rather than dwelling on setbacks, he said he prefers to embrace opportunities that scare him, citing his decision to compete in UFC despite widespread criticism.   Punk said he believes fear can be a powerful motivator and encouraged younger talent not to become consumed by criticism, especially on social media. He explained that one of the responsibilities he now embraces as a veteran is reminding younger wrestlers that mistakes on live television are inevitable and should be viewed as learning experiences rather than career-ending moments.

They touched on Punk's relationship with Stephanie McMahon during his original WWE run. Punk acknowledged that while their relationship had been "weird" at times, he now realizes much of that stemmed from a lack of communication rather than personal issues. Stephanie responded by discussing the unique challenges of growing up as Vince McMahon's daughter and learning to separate genuine relationships from outside opinions.

Looking back at the "Summer of Punk" in 2011, Punk described it as the moment he truly felt he had reached WWE's main event level. While he had spent years working toward that opportunity, he admitted he was actually planning to leave the company before the now-famous "Pipe Bomb" promo changed everything.   Punk offered behind-the-scenes insight into the legendary promo, explaining that while WWE approved the general concept, he intentionally submitted a toned-down version of what he planned to say because he believed Vince McMahon would reject several of his ideas if he revealed them in advance. He said McMahon's only notable instruction after reviewing the script was to "make fun of Stephanie."  He described delivering the promo largely on instinct and recalled Vince McMahon's immediate reaction backstage afterward: "I smell money." Punk called it one of the defining moments of his career and said he hopes another performer someday creates a similarly transformative moment.

Discussing today's WWE developmental system, Punk praised the current environment compared to his own experience, noting that younger talent are given far more opportunities to develop rather than being immediately discarded after mistakes. He said he wants future generations of wrestlers to work less, earn more money and enjoy longer careers than previous generations.  He expressed concern that too many performers focus on social media reactions instead of live audience responses. He argued that Twitter is often disconnected from what actually happens inside arenas, encouraging wrestlers to seek honest feedback from producers and veteran performers instead of chasing online approval.  He said that if the arena is empty, that's the problem, not the Twitter response.

Asked about advice he received from Paul Heyman, Punk recalled Heyman once telling him that he would eventually have to leave WWE and return before achieving everything he wanted professionally. While Punk initially viewed that as discouraging, he now believes it proved prophetic following his return to WWE. He also credited Heyman with constantly encouraging him to trust his instincts, something Punk said became invaluable throughout his career.

Stephanie asked Punk about his difficult childhood. Punk described growing up in a home filled with constant arguments, financial struggles and emotional neglect. He said professional wrestling and the punk rock music scene became surrogate families that provided the acceptance he wasn't receiving at home. Punk encouraged anyone facing similar circumstances to seek out a supportive community, saying wrestling eventually became the place where he truly felt he belonged.

Punk also reflected on his lifelong confidence, explaining that he never allowed criticism to define him. He argued that fame itself is largely meaningless, describing it as merely a byproduct of becoming successful at something rather than a worthwhile goal in itself.  Punk encouraged people to embrace opportunities that frighten them instead of avoiding failure. Whether competing in UFC, returning to WWE or pursuing personal goals, he said the experiences that scared him the most ultimately became the most rewarding.

They ended on a lighter note as Punk shared the story of proposing to his wife, April. He admitted asking her to marry him was more nerve-wracking than stepping into a UFC cage or wrestling at WrestleMania. After nervously arranging for flowers to be delivered with a hidden proposal message inside the card, Punk eventually got down on one knee after April finally noticed the note. She accepted, and Punk described it as the best decision he has ever made, calling their relationship the most important part of his life.

It was a good conversation between the two.
