RAW may have been back in its’ regular time slot, but tonight, for me, absolutely over-delivered. What a show.
1. Cody gets laid out by Gunther - I absolutely did not expect that, at all. Started the show off hot, and provided an immediate hook to stay tuned. Did you think that we’d get the title match as advertised or something would happen?
I was 100 percent sure we would see CM Punk, but the way that they did it was fantastic. They kept Cody out of the picture, which I think is the right move now. He should want Gunther for sure at SummerSlam. They could rematch Sami-Punk as well.
And further to that, I know they always say they don’t pay attention to what’s being said online, but given a lot of lukewarm fan reactions to Cody getting a title match, do you think they called an audible here?
It’s very possible. And, don’t believe them for a second. They absolutely listen to what is said online.
2. The Vision gets the gold back - again, big surprise to me. I figured this was the night they would implode, but here they are, champs again. The group has a different dynamic now with Maxxine joining them and Heyman not being very enthused about them as unit (except Maxxine) . Do you see the group re-building or is this still the start of a fracture that gets worse?
After SummerSlam they will need a group for Heyman to work with so I can see why they made the change. Maxine joining adds a new dynamic. Let’s see where it goes.
3. Seth Rollins was cutting what I felt was one of his best promos ever. I was actually disappointed when LA Knight came out because I wanted him to finish. After Knight was done, it left the door open for another match, but do you see some kind of alliance down the road, possibly involving Solo as their 3rd guy to battle the Bloodline?
I agree 100 percent. Seth was killing it and I wanted him to finish too. They could have had LA get attacked Big Jim in some other way.
4. CM Punk - for anyone that felt letdown about a bait & switch with Cody, I think this result was miles better. Tremendous match with the expected outcome, but the crowd was hot as they’ve ever been for Punk. And it created lots of storyline strings to pull on; Sami must be right on the edge of losing it, and Nick Aldis has now taken one of Pearce’s biggest stars to Smackdown. This also puts Punk, Sami and Cody all on the same show. What are your thoughts on how this unfolded and where do you see it going in regards to Summerslam ?
I think the whole scenario was great and they will sell that Sami was “blindsided” to get him a rematch. The only issue that I was that is…
In last night's Raw main event (7/6), much was made of Sami not having a chance to study, or prepare for, C M Punk. In a kayfabe world, can't the same be said of Punk? Theoretically, isn't Punk sitting at home when the phone rings unexpectedly? Is this one of those wrestling phrases or tropes that should be retired?
Exactly! That drove me nuts. Sure, Sami was blindsided but he was prepared for a match. Punk got a last minute call! I hated that they ignored that! Punk was at more of a disadvantage than Sami was.
