CM Punk returned to WWE Raw tonight, making a surprise appearance in his hometown of Chicago after months away, defeating Sami Zayn for the WWE Championship. This would be Punk's third time holding that title and his first reign since 2012. The title change took place in The Allstate Arena, the same venue he defeated John Cena for the title at Money in the Bank 2011.
While there were many online rumors about Punk in recent weeks, the reality is, as PWInsider.com reported on 6/10, Punk was slated for appearances this summer and it wasn't hard to guess he'd return in The Second City. Despite claims of issues between the two sides, we are told there were none and Punk was given some time off to recharge after Wrestlemania.
The title win appears to set up Punk vs. Cody Rhodes for Summerslam, a match that has been discussed internally for many months.
