WWE NIGHTS IN MLB, JAKE ROBERTS, FILMS WITH WRESTLERS BEING NOMINATED FOR ACADEMY AWARDS AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2026-07-09 10:00:00

Is Jake Roberts still with AEW?

No, he recently stated in an interview with Bill Apter he and the promotion have parted ways.

I remember when TNA used to run house shows at MCU Park back in the day, drawing a sizable crowd, atleast by their standards.  It was definitely a unique venue and atmosphere. Why did this stop, and why haven't any other major promotion attempted to run venues like those, atleast on a smaller scale, like what TNA was doing then?

GCW just ran there over the 4th of July weekend.  We mentioned it several times on PWInsider.com in the weeks leading up to the event.

When baseball teams have WWE Nights, do they pay you to promote?

No, of course not.  We mention them because they are newsworthy.

WWE is teasing a lot of retirements and departures in angles lately. I kinda feel a little funny about it considering so much talent were released without a goodbye.  How do you feel about all of this? Doesn’t this kind of feel like the Seth Rollins injury work, doesn’t it? Because if Brock or Asuka are not really leaving, it’s kind of a slap in the face to all the stars that lost their jobs for real.

No one ever stated Asuka was leaving.  We reported all along she was taking an absence to deal with a family situation.  Brock is already back, so if you feel his return is a slap to those who were released, you have the right to feel that way but it's all apples and oranges.  You can't equate storyline stuff to real life.

Awhile back you wrote about Mickey Rourke using a special effects device for a scene in "The Wrestler."  Is it possible he bladed in one take or in another scene as well?

Yes, of course possible.  There were several scenes where he bled, so it could be they used multiple means.

I know the Rock wasn't nominated for an Oscar award but has there ever been wrestler or wrestling filn -other than the Wrestler with Mickey Rourke ,to have won any type of Oscar award or been nominated for an award be it best actor/actress,film,director etc?

Barbie, which has a John Cena cameo, was nominated for lots of Academy awards, including Best Picture.

Dune, which featured Dave Bautista, won six Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.

In 1950, Mighty Joe Young won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and that featured pro wrestlers in a tug of war scene with Joe.

Guardians of the Galaxy, which featured Dave Bautista, won Academy Awards in 2015 for Best Visual Effects and Best Hairstyling and Makeup.
