Just finished SD, so here goes;
1. Sami Zayn opening the show was formulaic, but still good. Sami was tooting his own horn (deservedly so) but was still showing some righteous indignation towards the fans. The set up with Pearce was quick & painless. Overall by the numbers, but furthered the Sami story. Anything you would have done differently?
Having the champ address the audience after a win is always fine by me, especially when the road was as long as the one Sami took. I am glad Sami was a bit of a dick. He has been one for months now so I am glad they didn’t suddenly drop it just because he won the belt. I think if he loses to Cody tonight, he probably goes full on heel.
2. Having the AAA title match was a real throwback to me that reminded me of Nitro opening with a cruiserweight match back in the day. The high flying and choreography isn’t always my thing, but one match like this in the show works well for me. Both guys worked hard and didn’t overstay their welcome. Not that I want it, but do you see WWE trying yet again with their own cruiserweight title?
I don’t mind the lucha diversion at all. It’s a change of pace and usually a lot of fun to watch. I do NOT want to see WWE go for the Cruiserweight belt again, for a few reasons. One, with the influx of AAA into the product, they have too many titles as it is now. More importantly, a lot of the men are now being billed at real weights, around 200 pounds. They have the fans accepting that they are heavyweights. There’s no reason to mess that up in my view.
3. I like the direction of possibly seeing Jacob Fatu aligning with Royce Keys at some point. But I couldn’t help but notice the tepid crowd reaction when Keys came into camera view with Jacob & Jimmy. Maybe the crowd was a little tired from the double taping?
It could be, or they could hate that Jacob was on a roll on his own and has now made himself a patsy for Roman. I did not like how they did that and still don’t.
4. I have little desire to see Cody Rhodes in the title picture for a while. But I have exactly zero desire to see Jey Uso anywhere near it ever again. So the main event result was the best I could hope for. So, I guess going into RAW, do we get two things happening?
A. Does Cody take the title back and it sets up CM Punk v. Cody at SS? (they do need to fill a stadium, after all). I just don’t see Sami headlining, and that’s not a slight to him. Just having two nights with big crowds is a tall order.
That is what I see happening. I see Cody wins tonight and Punk comes out after the match and they make the match for SummerSlam, for the exact reason you stated.
B. If Sami loses, is Monday the night he finally snaps? He certainly wasn’t happy with Pearce backstage.
As I said above, that’s what I see happening and it will need to because if Sami’s reign is that short, he has to do something big.
