WWE NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS THOUGHTS

By Dave Scherer on 2026-06-27 16:11:00

WWE put on a strong, entertaining show tonight with the biggest twist save for the end of the night.  Let’s get into thoughts from the show.

Oba Femi vs. Jey Uso, King Of The Ring Final.

As I said before, unless Brock Lesnar was to get involved, there was no way that Femi should lose here, and of course, he didn’t.  He is a monster on the ascent and unless things change, he seems headed for a match with Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.

They did a really good job here of showing how a smaller guy, which is pretty much everyone compared to Oba, can work a believable match with Femi.  They worked a physical, entertaining match.

I am curious to see how Roman treats Jey after putting Oba in his path.  While Oba could always go after Sami he has mentioned Roman in the past so it would seem that is the direction that he is headed.

Right before the pin. Oba slapped the mat while he was in the sleeper.  That could have been looked at as a tap. He probably shouldn’t do that again.

Iyo Sky vs. Liv Morgan, Queen Of The Ring Final.

This match was freakin’ great.  These women are as good as it gets in that ring.

Iyo did an amazing job of selling the leg,  She added so much to the match by selling, kind of like Charlotte did last week, the new submissions that Liv has started to use.

I love that she picked Liv right away for SummerSlam.  I don’t see any reason to have her tease fighting Rhea if they have no desire to go down that road.

Liv should have known better than to tick off Danhausen.

Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker in a steel cage.

They had a war in this one.  They beat the crap out of each other and did a lot of dangerous stuff, for sure.  As a match, it was great.

I hated the finish.  Bron needed to win this feud and by losing it they made it clear that he is beneath Seth.  That doesn’t mean he will be always stay there, of course.  Hopefully this loss won’t kill his momentum the way that Solo Sikoa’s loss to Roman Reigns did to his last year.  Seth could have survived losing the war here because he has status with the fan base.  Bron could have gotten the same status with a win here.

It was smart to tease the people who were watching on ESPN proper that the cage match was up next.  Even if it didn’t get one buy of Unlimited, it was a smart idea.

Seth putting weapons in the ring before the match was a cool touch.  Might as well prepare for plunder early on.  Bron bringing in his own and then sitting across Seth before the fight was on was a cool touch as well.

Trick Williams vs. Ricky Saints for the US Title.

These two worked hard but it seemed like other than chanting for Trick, most of the crowd wasn’t invested that much in the bout.  That’s a shame because they worked hard and told a great story.

I loved Saints using the Eddy Guerrero trick to get right of Yachty.  Then, him coming back and doing The People’s Elbow was pretty funny.  Yachty clearly loves the business.  I have respect for outsiders who come in and do things the right way.

Tiffany Stratton vs. Jade Cargill for the US Title.

This one went exactly as I expected it to and exactly as it should have.  Both ladies worked hard and showed some amazing athleticism in there.  Jade keeps improving, to the point I probably should stop saying that she keeps improving.  Tiffy has so much talent.

Given the way it had been booked, Tiffy needed to win here, and she did.  Jade tried to use her women and were thwarted by Chelsea Green and Charlotte Flair.

I love that the Chelsea-Tiffy relationship is growing.  Green has worked so hard, for so long.  She deserves this.

Charlotte-Jade should be a fun feud.

Cody Rhodes vs. Sami Zayn vs. Gunther for the WWE Title.

Well, I didn’t see THAT coming!  Sami winning the Title was the last thing that I thought they would do today.  Now, let me be clear here.  I have wanted Sami to get a run with the belt for a while now.  He deserves it and him winning in front of the Saudi crowd was a great scene to watch unfold.  I also loved that he pinned the champ.  He didn’t get the Title by pinning someone else.

With that said, I have to wonder how long this reign will last.  Five weeks until SummerSlam is a curious time to change the belt.  They have plenty of time to craft whatever story they will tell to get to Minneapolis but on this day, Sami Zayn has reached the top of the mountain.  But, as he alluded to on the post game show, no matter what happens tomorrow he is still the champion today.  Good for him.

The match itself was great.  All of the men involved are pro’s pros and that was on full display today.

The crowd had been quiet at times for the previous three matches but they came to life when Sami came through the curtain.  They were definitely live again for the main event.  And they were definitely live for that finish!
