I don't follow AEW. I see clips here and there, though. I sent you a video a while back of Darby Allin taking a vertical suplex on the ring steps and mentioned how ridiculous it was that: a) he did it, and b) it was allowed. Not to be outdone, I saw this reel on Facebook tonight from Double or Nothing:
My questions:
1) To the best of your knowledge, where is the line drawn in AEW for "too dangerous"?
If there has been a line drawn I haven’t heard of it. The stuff that we see the company allow makes me think that pretty much anything goes there. Darby is allowed to do things that no responsible owner should allow him to do.
2) Do you think it's going to take a tragedy for them to realize they've already crossed that line?
That’s about the only thing that could do it I guess. Like the video says, it does seem like Darby has a death wish. It’s scary that it will probably take a death to make Tony Khan dial things back, but that’s what it seems like at this point.
Do you think, or have you heard, any blow back on Logan given that Jake's MVP is in direct competition with UFC? Jake's message of "Come to MVP and we will get you paid" can be enticing to fighters that feel undervalued with UFC.
I have not heard of any blow back and frankly, there shouldn’t be. One, it’s not Logan’s thing and two, MVP has a long way to go to compete with UFC.
I would argue Bron Breakker’s breakthrough moment on the main roster was when he violently took out the departing Ricochet in a memorable angle. WWE could have gotten way more mileage out of The Wyatt Sicks, Aleister Black, and especially The New Day if WWE would have booked shock upsets or had a rising heel viciously write them off TV - AND THEN release them!
It’s a valid point to make, for sure.
Imagine New Day answering the Oba Femi challenge and Femi squashing them both? Or, Ja’ Von Evans beating Aleister Black with his finish in 30 seconds? It seems like such a waste not to use the “time honored tradition” by having departing talent give rubs to those who remain. Your thoughts?
I could see why they wouldn’t want to decimate New Day given all that they gave to WWE but beyond that, yes I do think that in general it makes sense to get what you can out of a talent before they leave. To me the caveat is if they choose to leave on their own, as Ricochet did. In that case, yes job him out. It gets dicier when the company is cutting talents that didn’t wish to leave. In that case, I am ok with just letting them go and not adding humiliation to their firing.
