I loved AEW in NYC at Double or Nothing. Any chance AEW can just move all of their Television events there?
No. First of all, it's an open air stadium and was freezing on a rainy May night. No way they could have events there when it's cold. Secondly, one of the reason the show was so great was because the fans there saw this as a special show on a special night. If they ran there regularly, the uniqueness of the show and the level of crowd heat will die off eventually. You don't get excited about Christmas Morning if it happens 100 times in a row as opposed to once a year. It would burn the market out.
Did Nielsen change their cable ratings metrics again? Because if you look at recent numbers for Smackdown, Dynamite, Collision, and TNA, it seems like they have dropped to where they were before. The change initially helped boost the numbers, especially in the demo, so if they haven't changed anything, why the drop?
If they did, it has not been publicly announced.
I saw your post of Road Warrior Animal's wife trashing the WWE documentary. Obviously I don't know anything about her and her relationship with the WWE but he comments come off as petty. If they were wrong about where he died that does seem to be a big error but not something you would think someone would lose their mind over. As someone who's been around professional wrestling for a long time, do you feel the doc was fair and informative or did the miss the mark?
I don't know the entire deal, but it almost came off to me, from the outside looking in, as if she was upset there were other family members interviewed and she wasn't involved. I am sure she misses her husband and she is the one trying to protect his legacy, so I can't discount how she feels. I don't think it was one of the better Biography episodes, but a big issue with a lot of these is they are trying to tell the story that is decades-long in two hours minus commercials.
Is there any word on if Bushiroad is planning to sell STARDOM as well?
There's been no talk about this that I am aware.
Will the change in ownership affect the NJPW/AEW partnership? Especially since CyberAgents owns ABEMA, the Japanese streaming home of WWE.
TV Asahi has a minority ownership in ABEMA, so I don't think there will be any major cause or effect there. CyberAgents doesn't have any ownership in Asahi. The two entities are working together.
What's the best movie about pro wrestling that has nothing to do with pro wrestling?
Swap the porn industry for pro wrestling and Boogie Nights comes right to mind.
If you want a film that captures how obsessive pro wrestling fans can often be, watch the Patton Oswald film Big Fan.
If you want a film that showcases what lives used to be like on the road and the pressure of trying to become a star, Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. This in general is one of the best films ever written, period, in my opinion.
The videogame competition documentary King of Kong is pretty much the story of Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes with Guinness Book of World Records Donkey Kong recordholder Billy Mitchell (a hell of a nice guy, by the way) basically Flair in the 80s going against the everyman Steve Wiebe.
Did you have a favorite wrestling TV show growing up?
In 1988, when I got cable, I loved everything Jim Crockett Promotions did, plus CWA (Memphis) and Continental which aired on, of all things, The Financial News Network. I really loved the Southern style because it was far more vibrant than 90% of what WWF was producing at the time. I also really loved Joe Pedicino's Pro Wrestling This Week.
