WWE TALENT ROYALTIES FOR YOUTUBE, THE GREAT BRODY KING DEBACLE, SHOULD KING WIN THE AEW TITLE AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2026-02-13 10:00:00

I know that Dave Meltzer [insults deleted] for quite a while, but for a guy who has been covering the business for fifty years, and has some deserved plaudits for his contributions to the wrestling journalism business, what do you think possesses him to just blurt out his easily debunked conjecture about Brody King like he did? Does he just not care anymore? Because you and and several other highly-regarded reporters were able to ascertain the actual facts in no time flat.

Just by asking this question, you put me in a bad position because I have already publicly said after the last time I commented on Meltzer in a Q&A, I wasn't going to speak on him, so I won't - and I deleted your insults about him as well, just to be fair.  As far as why he reported what he did, I have no idea.  I am going to assume he either believed something he was told or assumed something he believed to be correct.  All I can say is that within the span of an hour with two emails and one phone call, I was able to get a comment from WBD and find out where Brody King was, flying to Australia.  I have no idea why he was not able to do the same, nor do I know why he didn't apologize in the face of the obvious.  Not my circus, not my monkey, as the saying goes.  My feeling is that whoever supports him will shrug and keep supporting him.  Whoever doesn't will point to this as the latest in a line of similar situations and nothing will change until the next kerfluffle.  I'd rather focus on what I can control, so there's your answer.

Do you foresee Marina Shafir getting a title run in the near future? Even with all the highs and lows of the Death Riders storyline, I have been super impressed by how much she's improved over the last year.

I would agree she has improved a lot but I also think a big part of that is her role with the Deathriders, effectively being the Sherri Martel of the group.  I don't know if that will translate to singles title matches.  We'll probably have a better idea once her run with Toni Storm ends.

Should AEW put the title on Brody King based on all the talk and buzz?  Even for a week?

No, they should put the title on him if Tony Khan has a long-term plan for him.  To do it for a week and then yank it from does nothing for MJF or Brody.

With the shuttering of the WWE Network and the shifting of archival content to YouTube, what does that mean for talent royalties? I saw Marc Mero had shared a copy of his recent royalty earnings and I wonder how this would affect former talent who already receive a pittance for their work.

The one thing that I don't think was made clear is that the royalty Marc Mero shared was (to the best of my knowledge) his portion for archival material likely from sales from an old DVD release, not streaming.  There's no money from the streaming that goes to past talents that I am aware of.  Mero would have gotten his portion of whatever was set aside for talents who appeared on whatever that material was, so if he was featured in a few clips on a release, he was presented whatever % of the total royalty amount going to all the talents who appeared would have been, since he was likely part of the larger group, as there's never been a DVD devoted to just Mero.  That's how WWE used to handle that material.  Talents did not get royalties or residuals for streaming and I doubt they will get them for YouTube or FAST Channels, etc. either.

Toy Fair is traditionally this weekend.  Will we get any WWE or AEW news?

It's possible but it seems like in recent years, Mattel has been saving a lot of the bigger reveals to time them for Wrestlemania, so perhaps not.

What was the worst show you've ever attended?

You know, I have to tell you, I can't even think of the worst, so whatever it was, my brain has flushed it.
