Since the incomprable Richard Trionfo is covering the MLW Summer of Beasts broadcast, I'll be posting live thoughts from within the Melrose Ballroom in NYC.
The legendary Atlas Security including Ronnie Lang himself are in the house.
The opener is MLW Tag Team Champions Los Depredadores, Magnus & Rugido defendng against a mystery team, who are THE SKYSCRAPERS, Bishop Dyer and Dijak. No sign of Teddy Long. They attacked and laid waste to the champs. The champs hit a double suplex on Dijak and clotheslined Dyer over the top to the floor. The champs looked good with their offense. Dijak and Dyer had good chemistry as a monster, badass team. Magnus and Rugido both did a great job here as champs and all of their big spots had people screaming in the crowd. New champs were crowned after they hit a combination DVDR and moonsault. NYC loves asskickers so they really got into the Skyscrapers here. Nice use of an old name to invoke destruction.
The former champs showed respect, only to get clobbered with the belts. That was funny.
Brock Anderson vs. Anthony Greene was second. Brock sure as hell looks like his father. Greene always has a good showing so this should be fun. He was aggressive early on. Anderson was worked over for some time but came back with a hell of a right hand. They battled to the floor. Greene nailed a rude neckbreaker. Anderson came back with a delayed vertical suplex. Anderson nailed a series of offensive maneuvers for a two count. Greene missed a moonsault and was drilled to the mat with a DDT for the pin. It makes perfect sense for him to use the DDT as a finisher given how important it was to Arn Anderson's repertoire.
Yuki “Kamiyu” Kamifuku vs. Wakana Uehara was next. They are each making their MLW debut. Yuki was billed as the casual beauty and came out as if she wasn't energized about being in NYC. The action was good early on. Wakana nailed a big slam that got a big reaction. Yuki used her long legs to cinch in an Octopus. She walked up the ropes and jumped off with a big boot. They battled back and forth. The crowd got into Wakana's offense. Yuki hit another big boot. She walloped Wakana into the corner with a great dropkick. Yuki nailed another suplex and a leg lariat for a two count. Solid stuff.
Shotzi came out and said Yuki just lit the fire for the next generation of the women's division and said she's like to face Yuki in MLW. Yuki agreed and left. Ava Everett came out and mocked Shotzi and said when they are talking about the women's division, they are talking about Ava Everett. Shotzi offered to fight right now. They argued. Salina came out and made a match official - this was the bout they taped earlier tonight at Blood and Thunder.
Next is KUSHIDA vs. Diego Hill. I hadn't seen Hill before but he was super athletic and impressive and at one point, pulled out a fn' awesome Arabian Press to the outside, followed by a clothesline from the top. He and KUSHIDA had some nice chemistry. KUSHIDA flipped him off the top into the Hoverboard lock but Hill held on and powdered out. Hill took a hell of a beating here but kept fighting back. KUSHIDA scored the pin but man, Hill came off as someone to watch for SURE.
Cesar Duran came out and told Hill he was a sensation so Cesar wasn't going to waste a second and offered him an MLW contract. The crowd chanted, "You deserve it." Hill agreed.
They announced Blood and Thunder would air 8/9.
Mistico came out to cut a promo but was attacked by CONTRA henchmen. He beat them off but another masked man hit the ring and attacked Mistico, leaving him laying with a low blow. He took off the mask and unveiled....

MJF cut a promo and said he wasn't done with Mistico and when he was done he was going to embarass him and his country. NYC didn't see this coming and popped for MJF's unveiling. Obviously MJF vs. Mistico in AEW and CMLL isn't over.
MLW National Openweight Champion Ultimo Guerrero versus Alex Hammerstone was next. Matthew Justice came out and called Hammerstone a juiced up freak and said he doesn't get to walk back in and get a shot. Justice then told Guerrero he never got his rematch from Mexico, so it's a Triple Threat match tonight. NYC was down with that and the battle was on. Hammerstone was clotheslined over the top. Justice and Guerrero battled. Guerrero's chops are LOUD. Justice nailed a nice swinging DDT off the ropes. As they battled, Hammerstone hit a missile dropkick from the top. Hell of a match so far with everyone getting big reactions. Guerrero hit a big back suplex on Justice from the top, scoring the pin and retaining. They all worked their asses off here.
Hammerstone ripped on Justice after the match. Justice attacked him and they brawled onto the stage. There was a big pullapart.
This has been a pretty damn fun show live. I hope it translates on the broadcast. It felt like a show MLW needed to have.
The main event is KENTA challenging Matt Riddle for the MLW title. Lot of stalling early on. The crowd was super into KENTA's offense. Riddle nailed some suplexes and a back senton splash for a two count. Lots of physical abuse for Riddle at the hands of KENTA. Riddle fired back but was taken down with a dragon screw legwhip. They went to the floor, where Riddle was sent into the ring post. Riddle fired back with kicks to the chest but KENTA caught his leg and drilled the back of his knee with an elbow. KENTA nailed a series of kicks but Riddle fought back and went to the top. KENTA cut him off and took him out but Riddle put his leg on the ropes during the pinfall. KENTA hit a skateboard dropkick in the corner and went to the top, nailing the big stomp. KENTA called for the GTS but Riddle escaped and nailed a powerbomb and the Bro Kick for a two count. KENTA grabbed the ropes to force the break. Riddle hit a ton of offense, an exploder and a back senton splash. He went to the top but missed a twisting press. KENTA snapped him down to the ring and locked on a STF. They battled back and forth. KENTA nailed some big shots and a kick to the chest. Riddle ducked a roundhouse and nailed a RKO. He hit the Bro Derek and scored the pin.
