It’s a big weekend in the world of professional wrestling, and if you are a fan of AEW, all eyes are on Glendale, Arizona, as the promotion presents Double or Nothing 2025 this Sunday, May 25th, live from the Desert Diamond Arena. One of the more unique attractions on the card features AEW Tag Team Champions Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin (with MVP at ringside) defending against the reigning Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions, Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara, collectively known as The Sons of Texas.
In an exclusive interview for PWInsiderElite.com, I sat down with Guevara for an in-depth conversation about fatherhood, his evolving wrestling philosophy, teaming with a legend in Dustin Rhodes, and why this Sunday’s match could mark a pivotal moment in his AEW journey.
When I caught up with Guevara on Monday, he was in a peaceful moment of fatherhood, chatting with me from his backyard while his daughter napped.
“Our baby's taking a nap right now, so I’m outside enjoying the weather. Life is good—baby’s healthy, wife’s good—and now I’ve got a big pay-per-view match on Sunday. Maybe we’ll bring some gold back home.”
Since becoming a father, Guevara admits his approach to pro wrestling has evolved—if only slightly. Known for his daredevil style, the Spanish God says he’s become more aware of the stakes outside the ring.
“When I first became a dad, I said I’d take it easier… and then every match after that, I was jumping off ladders through tables,” he laughed. “But yeah, I try to be smarter about it now. Wrestling is a high-risk game, especially with my style. You have to ask yourself: when is the risk worth it? This Sunday, it might be.”
This tag title clash at Double or Nothing is unprecedented for the promotion—two different tag champions from AEW and ROH. For Guevara, it’s a chance to elevate the ROH titles while potentially making history.
“Dustin and I made it our goal to make the ROH Tag Titles mean more than gold. We’ve defended them in the Tokyo Dome, in Australia, and all over the world. Now we’re getting the chance to defend that honor on an AEW pay-per-view. Maybe we walk out with both sets of belts. Maybe we unify them. Maybe we make a new belt. Either way, we’re ready.”
Facing off with Lashley and Benjamin—two powerhouses with MMA-caliber intensity—Guevara knows the challenge ahead.
“They’re incredible athletes. Technically sound. Dangerous. But I’ve got ‘The Natural’ in my corner—and I’m the Spanish God. This match is built to be great.”
One of the more interesting wrinkles of this tag team story is the connection between Guevara and Rhodes. The pairing wasn’t just thrown together—it grew organically, both backstage and onscreen.
“I’ve wrestled Dustin many times. His mind for this business is incredible. And when they told us we’d be teaming in ROH, it just clicked. We came up with our entrance theme together—a blend of both our songs. That was his idea. He wanted us to feel like a real team.”
There’s also a full-circle element to the pairing: Dustin Rhodes once teamed with Booker T, who helped train Guevara.
“It’s wild. Wrestling is like that—you stick around long enough, you end up teaming with your trainer’s partner or someone’s kid. I could be in my fifties one day teaming with someone Dustin helped train. This sport is one big tapestry.”
Among Guevara’s most viral AEW moments is the infamous golf cart chase during AEW’s first Stadium Stampede match, as well as his real-life panic being chased by a horse live on pay-per-view.
“The horse? Man, the horse has a mind of its own. We hoped it would stop where it was supposed to—but you never know. I just made sure I wasn’t anywhere near it. I ran as fast as I could,” he said, laughing. “That was my biggest concern: not getting trampled.”
As for the golf cart moment?
“That was the first show back after the pandemic tapings in Atlanta. We were in Jacksonville, doing that wild street fight—me and Jericho vs. Matt Hardy and Kenny Omega. We saw the golf cart and started talking ideas. I said, ‘I’m gonna make this look crazy.’ Jericho tried to warn me—he’s like, ‘Be careful, we’ve got a pay-per-view soon.’ But I was like, ‘Nah, this is gonna be great.’ I felt invincible.”
“That bump turned into memes, GIFs—even an action figure,” Guevara added. “You never know what moment is going to connect. But that one did.”
Since debuting with AEW in 2019, Sammy Guevara has lived his entire professional evolution in front of a live audience. From highlight-reel matches to real-life controversies, he’s taken every high and low in stride.
“There’s a Rocky quote I always think about: ‘It’s not how hard you get hit, it’s how hard you get hit and keep moving forward.’ That’s been me. I’ve had triumphs, I’ve had setbacks, but I face everything head-on.”
Now 31, Guevara says he’s learned to embrace growth.
“There’s no handbook for how to be a top star, especially when you’re 25 and just signed to a national company. But I’ve learned. And now, I’m growing—not just for me, but for my wife and daughter too.”
While AEW garners the spotlight, Guevara is especially proud of his work in Ring of Honor alongside Dustin.
“There’s so much great wrestling on ROH. Athena’s reign. Our stuff with The Righteous. But because it’s not on TV, it flies under the radar. I really wish it got more love. We’ve done some special stuff.”
Guevara’s long-running vlog has become a behind-the-scenes lens for fans, tracking his rise from the indies to global stardom.
“It helped people get to know me beyond the ring. We made Dark matches feel important just by telling stories through YouTube. That’s the power of social media.”
He even credits the vlog for helping get Tay Melo signed and building support for lesser-known AEW matches.
But this week, Guevara is looking towards Double or Nothing this Sunday.
“You could have a million matches on the show—but as long as I’m on it, that’s all the reason you need. I used to go by ‘Mr. Money’s Worth’—might be time to bring that back. You’ll get every penny’s worth watching Dustin and me walk out with tag team gold.”
