Has there been any word on services for Sabu?
Not as of this writing. If and when they are known for public consumption, we will report.
One thing you didn't mention in your article about Sabu were his best matches. Which ones do you suggest?
We ran a post here with a ton of Sabu matches from his career, but really there's way too many to mention for me so feel free to track down more beyond the ones I mention here. The ones that really stand out to me are Sabu vs. Terry Funk from the WWN TV Taping in NYC from February 1994, Sabu vs. Cactus Jack - both June 1994 in Philly and their September 1994 rematch in Hamburg, PA, Sabu & Bobby Eaton vs. Arn Anderson & Terry Funk from May 1994, basically every Sabu vs. Taz match, Sabu vs. Al Snow in their 1994 Ladder Match in Michigan, Sabu vs. Mikey Whipwreck from Allentown, PA in 1996, and Sabu vs. Terry Funk from anywhere. I don't think you can go wrong with a Sabu match from 1993 to 1996. His stuff with RVD, Chris Candido and 2 Cold Scorpio was also awesome. RVD & Sabu vs. The Eliminators was very much the blueprint for a lot of what pro wrestling has evolved into. There was just an incredibly fun, dangerous aura to his performances in the 1990s especially. I am extremely lucky I got to see so many of them live in that period. Sabu pretty much changed the trajectory of my life when I saw his work. I can very much say that I wouldn't be here had it not been for him.
Was there a Sabu match you wanted to see but never did?
There's always random matches that you could think would have been fun (Sabu vs. Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker etc.) in a "fantasy sense" but the only singles matches I can think about off the top of my head would have been Sabu vs. Jushin Liger and Sabu vs. Owen Hart, which happened but I've never seen the footage of either. Sabu faced Liger in Japan at least once as well as several tag team bouts where they were on opposite sides. When Sabu did his WWF dark matches in 1993, one of them was against Owen Hart and I've always wanted to see that. I would hope its in the WWE archives somewhere and eventually is seen, but I'm not sure.
I see Taz talking about Sabu, but didn't these guys hate each other?
No. They were ultra-competitive and I am sure drove each other crazy at times, but they were also bonded by what they went through over the years. You have to also remember that when they were younger, they were different people and as they got older and they and their perspectives changed, they saw their experiences different in hindsight. Sabu and Taz had done stuff together on the old Taz Show and they had been friendly for many years well beyond their ECW runs. They certainly did not hate each other and Taz, like a lot of people, was broken up about Sabu's passing. That was real emotion from the man behind Taz on AEW Dynamite.
How insane is it we got to see John Cena vs. Sabu?
I actually really enjoyed those matches. Cena was a fun opponent for Sabu.
Did Sabu ever wrestle CM Punk?
Yes, they did a tag bout in TNA and worked a three-way bout with Tracy Smothers in Ian Rotten's IWA Mid-South. I don't believe there was ever a singles match.
Is it true Sabu was going to be the Sultan in the WWF? I've seen that floating around?
I don't know that's 100% accurate. I seem to remember that after his WWF tryouts, there was talk of him being offered a deal but he was going to have change his name (I want to say Zabu, based on an interview he did in that time period) and tone down his style and he wanted nothing to do with that at the time. The Sultan character didn't pop up until August 1996. That's quite some time after the Sabu tryouts. I guess we could speculate that there was an idea that was percolated that WWF later used for Fatu, but I don't believe Sabu was going to be The Sultan in 1993/1994. Just my opinion.
