Spotlight Match: Georgio Lawrence vs CPA
Well this is a delightful surprise for a Spotlight. Lawrence getting confused by the old CPA shirtnanigens. georgio avoids the 1099 and starts to let those feet fly. CPA counters a high knee with a powerbomb…the 1099 hits and the dropkick connects for the w—Georgio kicks out?!? CPA tries coming off the corner again but Lawrence hits a roundhouse kick that puts the lights out and gets the three! Good warmup for the crowd as they enter for the main show!
Paul Crockett and Anthony Greene are on commentary. Lauren St. James is our announcer. Let’s gooo!
Match 1: The Residency (RJ Rude & Rex Lawless) vs Shooter Boys (Anthony Vecchio & Aaron Ortiz) (2 out of 3 Falls)
Fall 1: Residency is still feeling the embarrassment of losing the first match of this series and trying to punish these kids early. At LOT of this first fall is Rex tossing small humans around….and a copious improv verse of Creed’s “Higher” from RJ. The crowd really begging the Shootsr Boys to come back here and DO something meaningful. When we thought Vecchio was about to tag out, Rex pulls Ortiz off the corner and a chokebomb/backstabber combo puts Vecchio down for the first fall.
Fall 2: “1 down, 1 to go!” The Residency looking to get this done. There’s no break in the action, Vecchio is still stuck in the ring enduring punishment. But he finally gets away, dropping both Rex and Rude in the process! Ortiz hits a pair of northern lights before letting Rex accidentally spear his own partner before hitting Rude with a blockbuster/spinebuster combo for the second fall!
Final Fall: Rex charges back in and he is MAD. He wipes out both Shooter Boys and drags RJ back to get the tag. The Boy get stacked up for a double worlds strongest slam/clothesline combo! They kick out! Ortiz pulls RJ off the corner! A taste of the Residency’s medicine! Ortiz can’t pick up Rex for the finisher though! Rex tries a superplex but it gets slipped and the Shooter Boys double bomb him off the buckles and get the three before Rude can make the save! Fantastic opener and what a STATEMENT match for the Shooter Boys to add to their highlight reel! They aren’t just the kids from Create A Pro anymore.
Match 2: Brett Ryan Gosselin vs Brett Mettro
It’s a Brett fight! This was a blast. Mettro’s fundamentals and energy is so on point, I just him to have a THING for us to latch on to. BRG is still a hateable scumbag but he has a solid competitive match here, weathering a heavy storm but he finally puts Mettro away with an Unprettier. The King of Rhode Island stands tall but this was a very good showing for Teal Steel.
Match 3: JGeorge vs Bobby Orlando
Orlando is a favorite wherever he lands. JGeorge with some classic heel schtick, complaining about cheating that never happened while doing those same things himself. Being aggressive and cowardly in exactly the right proportions. Again, my favorite JGeorge stuff is when the whole “director” thing doesn’t dominate the match story. And that’s what we got tonight. Bobby works from underneath quite a bit, the crowd rallies behind him easily and a sick trick cutter sends JGeorge home with a Razzie.
Bobby grabs the mic and showers praise on Cranston. He’s having a blast here. He didn’t have a lot of fun when he was faced with Bryce Donovan last week. Bryce thinks he’s a loser? Well this loser will be watching the main event VERY closely and maybe Bryce should BE SHOOK. Good promo.
Brad Baylor is out here. Remember how he said Waves & Curls could have a tag team title shot tonight? Nah, that was a lie. Ricky Smokes’ birthday is in September and he didn’t feel like coming to Cranston in April. So instead, Brad is going to fight Jaelyn Brandyn (the “beatable one”) and if Jaelyn wins? They can have an “undeserved” title shot. Fingers crossed I guess?
Match 4: Brad Baylor vs Jaelyn Brandyn
Brad is just oozing confidence as he grinds down Brandyn. The crowd is firmly in the corner of Waves & Waves & Waves & Waves. Jaelyn with a low kick and Baylor is staggered! Brad can’t handle fair competition so he rakes the eyes and hits the corkscrew butterfly slam for the three count. He tries to keep the beating going but the Shooter Boys run him off! Are Waves & Curls title aspirations cut short?
Match 5: Paris Van Dale vs Liviyah
Cranston loves Liviyah…and as previously determined, they HATE Newport: home town of Paris Van Dale. Paris clearly knows that Liv has been in a roll lately and just keeps the pressure on right from the start. The crowd rallies Liv back into the fight, hitting a backstabber and a series of clotheslines! Paris tries to escape into the front row but Liv gives chase. Paris posts her at the last second and rolls back in for the count out victory. Booooooo!!!!
Match 6: Jariel Rivera vs Brando Lee
Rivera has been such a try-hard at Open…he’s shredded, he’s aggressive but he’s such a weenie that you just have to hate him. Lee has also be trying hard but it’s clear the crowd appreciates the work he’s been putting in on his rise. Jariel dominates early, nearly wiping out his opponent with a snake eyes that misses the buckles entirely. Lee with a sunset flip bomb and some Polish hammers set up the rolling dvd finish but Rivera kicks out! Rivera catches Lee coming off the top and looks for maybe a stampede but Brando rolls him up and locks the legs for the three! Rivera is BIG MAD at this result.
Match 7: DJ Powers vs Ichiban
No one likes DJ Powers. Everyone loves Ichiban. Well, I guess DJ Powers loves DJ Powers AND hates Ichiban. This is a more aggressive Powers than the DJ Coward we saw last Thursday. And still, the former Open champ is looking to make short work of him in the early minutes. But Powers is full of tricks from the Bakabella bag of bad behavior, throws a kick to the gut and throws Ichiban into that top rope and then just lets him stew outside, trying for the second count out of the night. Ichiban looks a little rocked but fighting back, trying to even up some of that damage done to the midsection. Powers hits a good Frogsplash but that midsection pain prevents him from
Getting the cover quickly. Ichiban hits a springboard leg lariat to get the W!
Lauren St James interviews Anthony Greene on the stage. He’s loving Rhode Island and jealous that he’s not in the ring tonight. But he has an announcement for next week: a fatal 4-way number one contenders match! Gal vs DJ Powers vs Ichiban vs Bobby Orlando!
Main Event: Fancy Ryan Clancy(c) vs Bryce Donovan (w/ Smart Mark Sterling) (for the Wrestling Open Championship)
Clancy has been set upon by both Vinny Scalise and Jariel Rivera in the past few weeks. His ankle might be not at 100% tonight. Who knows. Bryce is getting right under the champ’s skin early by sliding out and parading around the crowd. The crowd hates this too. Donovan and Sterling and doing a good job of making Clancy constantly looking in multiple directions, leaving those opening the big man can exploit. Clancy fighting but Bryce is just landing heavy shots and throws over and over. These match is falling right into the playbook of “Whatever It Takes”. Clancy finally rallies back, a short ddt stuns the big man and the fancy train is rolling! The side Russian connects! Sterling pulls Bryce out of there before the champ can deliver a kill shot….and Clancy trying to give chance leads to an apron chokeslam. Another chokeslam in the center is a VERY close call. Sterling interjects again as Clancy is coming back…Clancy gets Bryce to ram Sterling off the apron! A Claymore connects! He wraps up Bryce in a sharpshooter! Bryce kicks it off but Clancy flies into Ref Gina! Sterling slides in for a low blow! Booooooo!!!! Brando Lee is out here to stop this! Jariel Rivera blindsides Brando! Lee fights him off but Vinny Scalise hits the ring! They toss Lee and zip tie Clancy’s arms! They rip off a turnbuckle and this is just a mugging. Bryce has retreated to the outside for all this chaos. The Shooter Boys hit the ring to even the odds! Bryce is crawling back and he has the Open title belt! The ring is empty, Clancy is still zip tied…this is Bryce’s chance? Clancy dropping dropkicks while zip tied! Bryce comes in with the belt, Clancy ducks and hits a Dropkick! He gets a visual fall as Ref signs is STILL out. Sterling eats a dropkick! Clancy comes in for a body splash buts eats the buckle! Chokeslam…Gina makes the count! Kick out! Bryce has the belt again but Bobby Orlando runs out to stop him. He tries to take the belt away but Bry e protests. “NOT THIS WAY” says Orlando! Bobby goes for a belt shot on Bryce but hits Clancy…Orlando is shocked as Bryce easily covers Clancy and Gina (barely aware of the chaos around her) makes the cover and wins the Wrestling Open championship. Boooooo! Holy chaotic main event Batman! Bryce Donovan stands tall as the crowd chants “not my champ”, well aware of the sheer bulls*** it took to take the gold from the Fancy Man so soon into his run.
Orlando and Clancy are left in the ring. Bobby does try to comfort Clancy…but Ryan shoves Bobby down. He wishes our Mom had stayed out of this one. And just think, next week Bobby gets a chance to be number one contender. I’m sure Clancy loves that.
