4/21 WRESTLING OPEN: RHODE ISLAND LIVE REPORT

By Adam Cardoza on 2025-04-27 14:56:00

Wrestling Open RI

4/21/25 Cranston, RI

Paul Crockett and Brother Greatness are on commentary. Rich Paladino is your announcer. Let’s go!

Match 1: Notorious Mimi vs Liviyah

Mimi has been on a darker path lately and Livyah may have been a winner last week but a DQ win did not leave the best taste in her mouth. Livyah just plows Mimi over as soon as she hits the ring. Mimi on the backpedal and trying to keep a VERY aggressive Livyah at bay. Mimi goes back into her new bag of dirty tricks and lets this newfound bad attitude take control. Livyah battling back and frustrates Mimi so much that our fallen angel is screaming after a gory bomb fails to capture the win. Livyah goes a little of that ’tude back to Mimi, pulling her hair back and dropping her with a show stopper for the win! Good open!

Match 2: The Residency (RJ Rude and Rex Lawless) vs Shooter Boys (Anthony Vecchio & Aaron Ortiz)

Another rematch from last week. The Residency wants a chance to get their W back after a shock upset last week. Brother Greatness, being back at the booth for the first time in a long time, did NOT miss RJ Rude’s singing (this week’s flavor being some Fight For Your Right to Party). Shooter Boys have been fun to watch right along but they feel on another level in Cranston, being given the opportunity to establish their presence as one of the top teams on the young brand. After a hot start, the Residency takes over in their bullying way (Rude with a good line to Ortiz “You Gotta Fight…For your Right…To Tag In”). As is right and proper, Vecchio gets the hot tag and tries to wipe out a seemingly isolated RJ…but Rex (who was actually the legal man) blindsides him with a claymore and hits a sitout choke bomb for the sudden win. The teams are 1:1 and I couldn’t be happier to see a rubber match.

Match 3: “The Spotlight” Jose Zamora vs Ichiban

Zamora is a popular of TikTok, Crockett tells us. He sets up a camera on a tripod on the ramp and wants the crowd to be silent for his video of his own introduction. Ah good, we know to boo him. Also, he appears to be mic’d up during the match? Ichiban takes control early, reminding Zamora that he might be in too deep against the former Open champion. Jose starts to fire back but his decision to try and make another viral moment leads to a standing moonsault that hits nothing. The Spotlight jawing with the crowd while he starts to just beat on Ichiban. Ichi hits a jawbreaker on the shoulder and rallies….Zamora knows to block the first attempt of the Ichi Bankai…..but the second one finds its mark and Zamora falls in his Cranston debut. Good match.

Match 4: Sammy Diaz (w/ Brother Greatness) vs DJ Powers

The Church of Greatness may not be a stable anymore but Brother Greatness isn’t going to abandon a friend in what could be a 2-on-1 situation (we don’t SEE Georgio Lawrence at ringside but he could BE here). DJ has been on a kick of being the 5th man to ever pin former Open champion, Brad Hollister. Very back and forth hard hitting contest between these two for several minutes. Greatness does a great job here keeping this crowd fired up for Sammy, as the work in the ring is definitely worth it. DJ finally picks up the win after he dodges a frog splash and plants Diaz with a pedigree for the three. DJ is a slimeball but credit where credit is due, he can go.

Match 5: Ray Jaz vs Bobby Orlando

Jaz wanted to team with Bobby but Orlando respectfully declined. Jaz responds to respectful rejection with aggression I guess. The crowd knows to disrespectfully request Jaz to go back to New Jersey, in what might be their first ever clash. Jaz spends a lot of time pummeling our Mom early. The people don’t like it and try to rally Bobby back into it. It feels very one-sided for a while, Bobby finally rallies but can’t get it done. Bobby actually blocks the sunset flip back slide, one of Jaz’s kill shots. Orlando kicks out of an elbow drop! “You can’t beat him” chants the crowd! Jaz fights Bobby to the top but Bobby stuns him and comes off with a sick trick cutter that puts Jaz down for the three! What a comeback!

Bobby on the mic. He’s loving Cranston. He says he would love to be a champion here SOME DAY….and with that, enter Bryce Donovan. It’s been a minute since these two have shared ring space and there’s definitely unfinished business here as Bryce makes his Open RI debut. Bryce reminds everyone that they were tag team partners for a long time…but they failed to become champions because Bobby’s way doesn’t get the job done. But Bryce is doing things HIS way now and he’s very confident that it will lead him to Open championship gold next week against Ryan Clancy. But with that, he also tells his former friend to stay out of his way. Orlando says he will give Bryce his space….but that he’d better get the job done the RIGHT WAY if he does.

Match 6: Bryce Donovan vs Erik ChaCha

Chacha doesn’t even get a proper entrance. He comes out. The bell rings, Bryce almost immediately hits a chokeslam and puts a hand on him for the pin in 14 seconds. Bag him up. Bobby watches the whole thing and leaves as Bryce taunts him post “match”.

Brad Baylor is out here to be interviewed by Rich Palladino. He has some announcements regarding the tag team division that they lord over. The Residency and the Shooter Boys are having a rubber match NEXT week. And it’s gonna be two out of three falls! And the second announcement: The winner of tonight’s main event is getting a title shot against Swipe Right. Baylor says they should soak TONIGHT’S glory in….because Swipe Right isn’t going anywhere.

Main Event: Waves and Curls (Traevon Jordan & Jaelyn Brandyn) vs The Gym Rats (Nick Battee and GAL) (no time limit)

This is definitely intriguing. I suspect Waves & Curls are a lock for a title shot….but honestly, the sudden rise of Batee & GAL as a viable tandem could make for an interesting title clash. The Rats are out here with the Waves & Curls confetti cannon while Batee is just hitting the siren on his megaphone over and over. Ref Gina clearly  haaaaaaates this. Baylor joins Paul Crockett on commentary. Waves & Curls quickly get some payback, getting those confetti cannons back and firing them into their opponents’ faces before the bell rings. Baylor doesn’t like how unfair that was. Snerk. Waves & Curls running over Batee early. Traevon ends up in a standoff with Gal but his attempt at a leg lariat gets caught in the ropes….leaving Traevon open for a healthy dose of pummeling. Batee running his mouth on the megaphone, to Baylor’s delight. Crocket….not so much. Traevon makes the tag out but Jaelyn is left to the wolves. The crowd is behind their dudes but it’s not looking good. A cool looking tandem pushup pin spot on Jaelyn really annoys the room. Traevon with the hot tag and THIS hot tag goes right. Big man cleaning house! Gal brings in those gold medal…Traevon gets them  away but almost gets DQ’d when ref gina finally catches him holding the weapon….which opens Gal to hit a low blow on Jordan. Jaelyn breaks up the pin! Gal tries a bomb on Jaelyn….Waves & Curls with the shatter machine! Batee runs in with the megaphone but he falls victim to the Wave Check for the three! Our title match is SET! These two teams have a LOT of chemistry with each other, themselves and the crowd. Brad Baylor holds his title high on the stage and jaws with Waves & Curls to close the show.

I’ve been live in the room for the first 3 weeks of Cranston so it was cool to see the broadcast version this week. The new venue looks VERY good on air. Like Open MA, it’s a very well produced show but I do think THIS venue looks better on camera than Electric Haze…and maybe even better than the White Eagle ever did.
