While there has been a lot of talk in the New York City area about The Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island being torn down in favor of a casino and entertainment venue being built on the property, that isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Numerous reports in the NYC have noted that Las Vegas Sands, who were bidding billions on the property and the rights to get a gaming license in New York, have pulled out, claiming a better use of their money is to invest directly into shares of Las Vegas Sands.
“For Las Vegas Sands, we believe the highest and best use of our capital in the near term is to purchase Las Vegas Sands and Sands China shares,” the gaming company stated. “Accordingly, Sands has decided not to bid for a casino license in New York.”
WWE has run the venue for decades, dating back to the early 1970s when the Coliseum opened. The first episode of Saturday Night's Main Event was taped in the venue and the second Wrestlemania featured a portion out of the Coliseum, including Mr. T boxing Roddy Piper. The venue also hosted a number of PPVs over the years, including Summerslam 2002 which saw Shawn Michaels return to the ring against HHH, Brock Lesnar win his first WWE championship and was one of the best top to bottom WWE shows ever. The Coliseum also hosted Jim Crockett Promotions in 1987 and 1988 including JCP's first-ever PPV, the Bunkhouse Stampede in January 1987. JCP last ran the venue in April 1988.
The Coliseum was shut down in 2015 with WWE running a farewell Raw taping that saw Vince McMahon pay tribute to the venue. It was remodeled and reopened in 2017 with WWE returning for TV tapings and live events. WWE ran the first resurrected Saturday Night's Main Event there while AEW debuted in the venue in December 2023 with World's End, featuring the final match for Sting in New York on that event.
There is still great interest in the property being turned into a casino, but whether that happens or not remains to be seen. While there are no current pro wrestling dates at the venue, it is hosting a number of announced events through July.
