It is Wednesday, and AEW Dynamite is held at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, MN. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone. LOTS of stuff around the ring and all over the broadcast about the Minecraft movie coming up soon.
Kenny Omega (AEW International Champion) vs. Blake Christian w/ Lee Johnson
Christian has been on Ring of Honor, and they show his highlights as he comes to the ring.
Big chants for Omega as the match starts. Christian gets a kip-up after Omega hits a shoulder tackle and flips him the bird, which gets him a series of chops. As Christian takes over the match, he does a lot to make the crowd hate him—arrogance and mocking Omega verbally. When Omega starts with his big moves, the crowd is into it, wanting to see Christian take the hits. Omega hits One-Winged Angel for the quick pin and the win.
Winner and still AEW International Champion: Kenny Omega
After the match, Omega has something to say. He talks about the upcoming match at Dynasty with Ricochet and Speedball Mike Bailey, but Bailey comes to the ring as soon as his name is mentioned. Bailey says Omega is an inspiration to him and he admires Omega. However, at Dynasty, he won’t hold anything back when he gets the chance to take Omega’s title.
Then we get Ricochet on the big screen, and he can’t be there because he is getting married today. He says he will leave Dynasty with the girl and the gold. Omega says he doesn’t need to make friends because he has a cat. When it comes to wrestling, there’s only one thing he has time for: his legacy.
Somewhere there isn’t anyone around, Chris Jericho says it’s time for Big Bill and Bryan Keith to prove they are worthy to still be with Jericho. They leave, and he says he doesn’t want Gravity's mask—he wants Bandido’s. So, it’s title versus mask at Dynasty.
MJF comes to the ring with a microphone.
He starts by dissing Prince, so it’s good I couldn’t make it to the show because I’d have to be restrained. MJF says he wants to have a chat with MVP to give him an answer. MVP comes to the ring with a huge positive crowd reaction. MJF says he has thought about it and he’d like to be in the business of hurting people.
This brings out Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin. Lashley looks like he’s asking for a handshake, but instead he is asking for the card. He tears it up in front of MJF. MVP says they are cool. MJF leaves the ring and MVP doesn’t look pleased.
Bryan Keith and Big Bill then come out, and he says it’s true that hurt people do, in fact, hurt people. MVP tells Bill to let the little bitch on their leash talk like men. Bill says he doesn’t see a challenger for the tag team titles. MVP says he doesn’t either. Bill says that MVP is a chump. Bill says he was never pinned or submitted for the tag team title, and he wants his rematch.
MVP tells them if they win a match, they can have an opportunity.
In the back, Renee Paquette is with Toni Storm and Thunder Rosa.
Rosa reminds Toni that they had a feud in the past, but Toni says the past is the past and tonight they will team up as Thunder… um… breasts. Rosa shows her ThunderStorm shirt, and Toni says that was the past!
Brody King vs. Kyle Fletcher
Don Callis does NOT join commentary, but takes Tony’s format, wads it up, and throws it in his face.
Fletcher takes a long time to take off his extra gear, and when he can tell King is not paying attention, he charges into him. Fletcher flexes for the crowd as King gets up and comes in behind him before chopping him down. King takes over, and Fletcher does a great job of being beaten pillar to post, and the crowd eats it up. After the commercial break, Fletcher is able to get some offense and poses after each big move.
King even does a dive onto Fletcher, and the crowd is into it. Fletcher is able to whip King into the ring post and then goes for big attacks as Callis menaces just out of range. As they fight on the apron, King hits a Death Valley Driver on the apron as we go into the second commercial break.
They come back and it’s just been a hoss fight. They throw big bombs at each other, and Fletcher is able to get a stalling tombstone piledriver for two. When King goes for the cannonball in the corner, Mark Davis pulls Fletcher out of the way as Callis distracts the ref. Fletcher gets a turnbuckle brainbuster on King for the pin and the win.
Winner: Kyle Fletcher
Fletcher and Davis start a post-match beatdown, but Powerhouse Hobbs charges to the ring for the save. Wonder where Buddy Matthews is…
After the break, Don Callis has joined commentary, and security is trying to keep Hobbs and Davis apart so they can start the match. Hobbs tosses security out of the ring, and they charge at each other.
Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Mark Davis
THIS is a hoss fight. Two big guys just throwing bombs at each other, and the crowd is loving it. Quickly, Hobbs gets a spinebuster for the pin and the win.
Winner: Powerhouse Hobbs
In the back, Lexi Nair is with The Patriarchy without Christian Cage, and Nick Wayne says things make sense now and what happened last week during Cope’s match was how to properly put together a plan.
Renee is with Adam Page and Swerve.
Strickland shows up and they have words, and Prince Nana pulls Swerve away from the argument.
Tony Schiavone has a pre-taped interview with FTR and Cope. As they start, Dax Harwood says his emotions got the better of him and he apologizes for it. He says they took a break from going for the tag team title to help Cope, and Cope wasn’t able to win the title. Cope says he came back to help them when the Death Riders attacked him. Cash Wheeler says he can’t watch them argue, and without either of them, he would have nothing. He wants them all to be on the same page.
Dax says it’s time for FTR to go after the tag team titles. Cash says Rated FTR should go for the trios titles. So, they will be facing the Death Riders at Dynasty.
Swerve is now on his way to the ring, and he calls out Jon Moxley to meet him in the ring face to face.
And Mox obliges him and comes out alone.
Swerve says this has been going on for too long, and he’s given Mox enough rope to hang himself with. He says Mox used to be revered, but now he hides behind the Death Riders. He says Mox says no one is worthy of the title, but Swerve thinks he locks it away because he can’t bear to see it—because he knows he’s not worthy. He says everything Mox says he was is in Swerve.
Outside the ring, Claudio has snuck in behind Prince Nana.
Mox says it’s Swerve vs. Swerve and to quit worrying about him. Mox says he knows who Swerve is and what he could be, but he’s been disappointed before, and Swerve has a chance—if he is willing to see how far he will go. Mox says Swerve hasn’t suffered enough yet, but he will. He says Swerve is the kind of guy he believes in, but he doesn’t give handouts, so Swerve will have to go all the way.
Marina Shafir goes to the ring with a crowbar, but Willow Nightingale meets her there with a steel pipe. Swerve gives his bona fides and says at Dynasty he takes the title and Mox can play Jon Moxley on TV.
Shafir backs off and Mox leaves the ring. Shafir pulls Willow off the apron. Claudio pulls Shafir out of the fray, and Nana tries to hold Willow back.
In the back, Shibata has a camera.
We see Samoa Joe and Hook talking about how Hook held the Redrum extra long on Max Caster. Hook says it was fun. They come upon Max, who is talking to Top Flight and AR Fox, telling them to go solo. Joe grabs Max and chokes him out, then turns to Hook and says, “It IS fun.”
Renee is with Jay White, and he enters the Owen Hart Tournament.
Top Flight (Darius and Dante Martin) w/ AR Fox vs. The Already-In-The-Ring Alex Findley and Devo Knight
So, instead of Leila Grey, Top Flight has AR Fox. Personally, I’d rather have Grey walking me to the ring. Hi-Yooooooo!
Top Flight is from Minneapolis, which is across the river from St. Paul, so the hometown boys get a quick enhancement match to show off for the hometown crowd.
Winners: Top Flight
We see Lio Rush and Action Andretti in the front row and they jaw-jack with Top Flight.
A short hype video for Will Ospreay.
Mark Briscoe vs. Konosuke Takeshita
Don Callis joins commentary.
They run the ropes and Takeshita gets the first takedown. Briscoe is able to get a few shots in, but this is a spotlight for Takeshita just dominating. When we come back from the commercial break, Briscoe is getting a series of attacks on Takeshita. Briscoe is able to get a couple of dives and then an elbow off the barricade. Takeshita takes a big lariat in the ring and Briscoe gets a two-count.
They throw hands and trade exploders. Briscoe gets a Jay Driller for two, with Takeshita getting a foot on the ropes. It surprised me how they went from what looked like a high-level squash to a solid TV match, with Takeshita winning with Raging Fire.
Winner: Takeshita
We then hear from the Death Riders, answering Rated FTR’s challenge, and they talk about how the arguments Rated FTR has are what annoys them. Pac says that they challenge Rated FTR to survive a match with them.
We see the Hurt Syndicate, and Bobby is unhappy with MVP inviting MJF into the business. Bobby says he doesn’t trust him. MVP says MJF has some reprehensible qualities—and that’s what he likes about him. However, if they don’t want him in, they’ll revisit it. MVP then says they need to deal with Big Bill.
Penelope Ford and Megan Bayne vs. Toni Storm and Thunder Rosa
Bayne and Rosa start out, and Bayne is a head taller than Rosa. Bayne takes the attacks from Rosa and gets her with a scoop slam. Storm tags in and Bayne tags out so that Ford can face her. Rosa then tags in and works with Ford as we go into the commercial break.
When we return to full screen, we come back to Rosa and Bayne, with Rosa as the babyface in peril. Rosa is able to get the hot tag and Bayne tags in as well, so we finally get them going at each other. They brawl on the floor and we see that the story may be that Storm will have to outsmart Bayne when they do fight at Dynasty. We go back to Bayne and Rosa for a bit until Storm gets back in the ring.
Again, Storm is able to take control by outsmarting Bayne, but Bayne recovers quickly. Storm dodges a pump kick and instead Bayne nails Ford. Bayne hits Face Decent on Storm for the pin and the win.
Winners: Penelope Ford and Megan Bayne
