TNA will present the 2024 Victory Road PPV this Friday from the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, Texas. It will feature:
*Nic Nemeth vs. Moose for the TNA World Championship
*Jordynne Grace vs. Wendy Choo for the TNA Knockouts World Championship
*Joe Hendry vs. Josh Alexander
*Zachary Wentz vs. Mike Bailey for the X-Division Championship
*The ABC vs. The System (Brian Myers and Eddie Edwards) for the TNA Tag Team Championship
*The Malisha vs. Spitfire for the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship (and if Spitfire loses, they must disband as a team)
Let’s take a look at the matchups:
The Malisha vs. Spitfire for the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship (and if Spitfire loses, they must disband as a team)
We have seen these two teams in the ring with each other in various ways over the last few months, so I’m expecting a good match. However, I’m also looking forward to something, hopefully, new for the next PPV. The stipulation of Spitfire having to disband as a team adds some extra interest to this match. While I don’t know if the stipulation was necessary, it makes things less clear cut. I don’t see a reason for Spitfire to break up and Alisha Edwards didn’t sound too sure if she’d be cleared for the match on last week’s iMPACT! Therefore, I could see Spitfire winning the titles and staying together with The Malisha being able to hide behind Alisha’s injury as a reason for losing.
The ABC vs. The System (Brian Myers and Eddie Edwards) for the TNA Tag Team Championship
The System triggered their rematch clause to create another match we have seen in the last few months. The ABC has been dealing with First Class over the last couple of weeks, but will be taking them on tonight on iMPACT! I am expecting a really good match, as both teams always work hard and work well with each other. The System will probably slow the match down and work a more traditional tag team match, with The ABC speeding it up in the second half of the bout. I don’t see a reason for The ABC to lose, but who knows? Maybe First Class or JDC gets involved to cause some shenanigans, but I don’t expect anything too crazy.
Zachary Wentz vs. Mike Bailey for the X-Division Championship
Mike Bailey was looking to take on the best during his X-Division Championship run and ended up losing it in the Ultimate X Match at Emergence two weeks ago. With him wanting to take on “the best,” I truly thought he would retain at Emergence and then drop the title within the next few months to someone that he built up a program with. Zachary Wentz is someone who I would have loved seeing in that program. Instead, he won the Ultimate X Match and then went on to face Wes Lee at NXT’s No Mercy PPV. In the ring, it was all excellent, but the story left me wanting a little bit more. I thought that Mike Bailey losing the X-Division Championship would have had more emotion behind it besides just not grabbing the title quick enough at Emergence. Either way, I expect this match to be really good with both men working extremely hard. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wes Lee get involved to set up a big match at Bound for Glory, but I’m also not banking on it.
Joe Hendry vs. Josh Alexander
This is the hardest match to pick for me. Obviously, Joe Hendry has been heavily featured in the wrestling world recently - showing up on NXT and getting exposed to a large fanbase who showed their enjoyment of him. Everyone continues to believe in Joe Hendry and the time is definitely right to keep that momentum going. Hendry clearly wants a shot at the World Title, so a win over Josh Alexander would certainly give him a strong argument for that shot. Josh Alexander may not have been able to beat Nic Nemeth, but he’s never too far from title contention. He has been making things difficult for Joe Hendry recently and will continue to do so in this match. Alexander never wants to be out of title contention, so he’ll be doing everything in his power to stay in the spotlight of contenders. The winner here, to me, is not obvious, but I do think Joe Hendry should get the win if TNA plans on having him move into a title shot soon.
Jordynne Grace vs. Wendy Choo for the TNA Knockouts World Championship
Will the mind games of Wendy Choo help her make a big splash in TNA and women’s wrestling, in general? This is a super intriguing matchup as it is, once again, TNA vs. NXT with Jordynne Grace working with someone who is a very different style of wrestler than who she has faced recently. I’m guessing we’ll have to keep an eye out for Rosemary in this match. I expect Wendy Choo to showcase a lot of what she can do with Jordynne Grace coming out the winner in the end.
Nic Nemeth vs. Moose for the TNA World Championship
With Josh Alexander in his rearview window, Nic Nemeth gets to turn his attention to another former opponent of his. Moose is calling upon his rematch clause to get another shot at Nic Nemeth and the TNA World Championship. Much like the other rematches on this card, I’m expecting a good match with both men putting on a show. I do not see any reason to take the title off of Nic Nemeth right now, especially as he is proving that he can be “the” guy in a promotion.
With only two weeks to transition from Emergence to this show, it makes sense to get some rematches and a lack of a big build on Victory Road. However, I do expect this card to be a fun watch. It’ll be interesting to see if anything is added over the next day, as people like Mike Santana, Frankie Kazarian, Ash by Elegance, and Jake Something have good things going and I’d love to see them keep their momentum. However, TNA will have much more time between Victory Road and Bound for Glory to not only feature some more talent, but refresh the storylines and build towards big matchups in October.
