So, we’re all busy. And it’s hard to find the time to just sit back, relax, and watch a flick about some of our fav sports – fiction or real. When you do find that rare time, though, here is a bucket list of films from 2023 and so far in 2024 that you might want to check out. The list includes just a few words of description to whet your appetite.
Flint Strong
A movie inspired by the documentary T-Rex. It’s the story of Claressa Shields and her legacy and rise to competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Female boxers will find inspiration, and male boxers will develop a new respect for the women in the sport.
Challengers
For those who love the game of tennis, here’s a film with some fictional drama and a love triangle to boot. Tashi was once a famous tennis player who retired from the game to coach her husband in the game. He turns into a winner, only to start losing again. It’s the drama of sports coupled with love and comedy.
80 For Brady
Older women with crushes on football players. This is the backdrop for a total fluff move about the Superbowl that even features Tom Brady, with cameo appearances of others in the game. A film for those who do not want a serious football film – drinking, a bit of drugging, and older women looking to date a single man round out this comedy. When you just want entertainment, this may be one to watch.
The Boys in the Boat
George Clooney directs this film, based on a non-fiction novel of the same name. It’s a biography of Joe Rantz who gave up everything to get to the Summer Olympics of 1936 as a part of the US rowing team.
The Hill
Another true story – this time of Ricky Hill, a disabled dreamer who pursues his dream to become a baseball legend. He makes it to the major leagues, and his struggles and challenges provided inspiration to many.
The Swimmers
Want more inspiration? Yusra Mardini will provide it. As a teen, she and her sister fled for their lives, crossing the Aegean Sea, in a barely seaworthy dinghy. From that start, she rose to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics as a swimmer.
Next Goal Wins
Football coach Thomas Rongen took over what was for all purposes a hopeless American Samoa national football team. Amazingly, they went on to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The story is not a story – true fact.
Boogie
A feel-good drama about a New York City Chinese-American immigrant who just wants to play basketball and dreams of the NBA – all of which is opposed by his parents who have “much higher” expectations for him. All of this is against the backdrop of being an immigrant trying to fit into the American way of life. No spoiler alert – you’ll have to watch it.
King Richard
This docu-drama tracks Serena and Venus Williams’ first coach – their dad Richard. The path was not always easy, but he persevered, determined to give his girls a better life. Throughout the film, Williams seems conflicted between the drive for his girls’ success and his fear that they would fail. It’s a pretty good watch.
The Way Back
Ack Cunningham was a basketball star who hit bottom after his wife died and he lost the foundation of a family. He spiraled into addiction. Trying to turn his life back around, he takes a job as the basketball coach of his former high school, only to find that times have changed and his players are more than a bit rough around the edges.
Borg Vs. McEnroe
The rivalry between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe became notorious in the tennis world in the 70’s. This Swedish film documents it and brings it to its ultimate end in the 1980 finals at Wimbledon.
