A RETURN TO THE DAVIS ARENA AND MORE: OVW RISE TV REPORT

By Ethan Absler on 2024-08-30 08:15:00

Some might say that OVW’s in-ring action and backstage drama were so action-packed and spicy, that the Davis Arena overheated to a dangerous temperature. But after an unexpected summer vacation, OVW is back, and with new renovations including air conditioning to the famous Davis Arena in Louisville, KY!

As expected, Rise 1307, also known as “Homecoming” was another must-see for OVW fans; plus let’s not forget we are still technically only one show removed from June’s Independence Rage. To keep the momentum going, Rise 1307 featured PPV-quality matches with high stakes and big stars including a number one contender’s Women’s Royal Rumble, an OVW tag team title match, and a Rush division gauntlet match!

At a Glance

  • Dustin Jackson Vs Will Austin (C)

  • Star Rider Vs Mount Kadeem

  • Number-One Contender’s Women’s Royal Rumble Match

  • J-Rod Vs. Layla Grey (C) (OVW Women’s Championship)

  • Rush Division Number-One Contender’s Gauntlet

  • Tusk N’ Chains (C) Vs Dalton McKenzie and AJZ (Tag Team Championship Match)

Opening: Revolution Destroys the OVW Roster

As OVW Homecoming came on the airways, viewers were greeted by the site of the entire locker room laid to waste in the ring. Fans in attendance report that Revolution was responsible for a savage and violent beatdown, but viewers at home didn’t catch the events that transpired.

Presumably, the locker room was out there to welcome fans back to the Davis Arena and thank them for their unwavering support, but Revolution picked up on the exact same page: Practically hijacking the show.

Match 1: Dustin Jackson Vs Will Austin (C)

Dustin Jackson burst out of his corner strong, gaining an early lead, but the Rush division Champion caught him with a beautiful dropkick, sending Jackson tumbling off the top rope to the outside. Austin retained his upper hand for a while, hitting beautiful moves like his Springboard Crossbody, but the resilient Jackson fought back, hitting the champ with a Superplex. Follow that up with a Tope Con Hilo and Jackson was firmly back in control.

Jackson continued his roll, hitting an impactful Crossbody of his own. Just when it looked like he was going to finish Austin off, the champion hit a stunning Springboard Hurricanrana, rolling up Jackson in the process for the sudden victory.

For Jackson, the outing was nothing to be ashamed of. Both competitors looked very strong here, but Jackson really shined.

Result: Will Austin (C) DEFEATS Dustin Jackson

Match 2: Star Rider Vs Mount Kadeem

Two athletes looking to build more momentum in OVW squared off in a classic big man vs high-flier bout. As expected, Star Rider used his speed to take control very early, but Mount Kadeem reminded everyone why he’s a former NFL player, bursting out of the corner with a thunderous shoulder tackle at surprising speed of his own.

Kadeem continued his dominance, throwing Star Rider across literally the entire ring. Suddenly, Revolution entered the ring, confirming everyone’s worst nightmare. Revolution proceeded to beat down the two with baseball bats, reminiscent of the savage beating that left the locker room bloodied at the start of the show.

Thankfully, those in the locker room who were healthy enough came to the rescue, driving Revolution out of the ring. The damage had been done though, and Kadeem and Star Rider suffered a horrific beating.

Result: No Contest

Match 3: Royal Rumble Match for the Number-One Contender Spot to the Women’s Title

With Layla Grey on commentary, Haley J and Angelica Risk started things off. Their battle quickly spilled to the outside (under the bottom rope) leading to a vicious suplex on the floor. As the two battled, Tiffany Nieves emerged as entrant number three. Nieves brought the fight back into the ring, gaining momentary control before Holidead took everyone out as the fourth entrant. As Holidead continued to dominate, Freya The Slaya appeared as entrant number five, going on a tear of her own.

With the ring starting to get crowded, Freya dumped Haley J onto the apron before a chop sent Hollyhood flying for elimination number one. Looking to earn her spot in a championship match, Nova Fury entered as number six. Fury took everyone out before Nieves took her out from behind. As Nieves taunted the fans and her fellow competitors, Holidead dumped her out of the ring for elimination two.

Sophia Rose was entrant number seven, immediately beating down Freya The Slaya before Holidead and Risk worked together to eliminate Slaya. J-Rod emerged as entrant eight, quickly taking out her competitors in the ring with impressive strength and speed. She dumped Fury onto the apron before delivering a Roundhouse kick, eliminating Fury.

J-Rod continued her momentum, spearing Holidead off the apron for another elimination. Just then, Shalonce Royal entered at number nine and Dream Girl Ellie at 10. Ellie and Shalonce both looked good, but Ellie went on to eliminate Angelica Risk after a good showing from the number two entrant. Soon after, J-Rod eliminated Shalonce to narrow down the field to the final three.

Ellie and Rose tried teaming up to take out J-Rod, but tonight was just her night. She forced the elimination of Sophia Rose before eventually eliminating Dream Girl Ellie for the win.

Result: J-Rod Wins Number-One Contendership for the OVW Women’s Championship

Just when it seemed the Women’s Rumble match would end without any foul play, J-Rod and Grey got into a verbal altercation, prompting Al Snow to come out and hopefully diffuse the situation.

Diffusing did not take place as Grey and J-Rod convinced Snow to give them their match right then and there.

Match 4: J-Rod Vs. Layla Grey (C) (OVW Women’s Championship Match)

With emotions running high, both women exchanged blows with neither one able to gain a clear upper hand early. Finally, Grey hit a Crossbody to the outside which gave her the bit of momentum she needed to get rolling.

As Grey looked like she was closing in on a victory, J-Rod countered a Powerbomb with a Back Body Drop, opening the door for the challenger to hit a devastating Spear. J-Rod proceeded to hit the Baddie with a Jackhammer, shocking the world and becoming the new OVW Women’s Champion!

As she celebrated her surprising victory, Revolution appeared once again, surrounding the new champion. With the OVW faithful fearing for J-Rod’s physical safety, she shocked the world again, aligning herself with Revolution.

Result: J-Rod DEFEATS Layla Grey to become the new OVW Women’s Champion and Joins Revolution

Match 5: Rush Division Number-One Contender’s Gauntlet Match

Fresh off a victory in tonight’s opening contest, Will Austin joined the commentary booth to scout his number one contender in person. Fittingly, Buzz Backlund started things off against Icon Lee with the former Rush Division Champion gaining an early lead with his dazzling technical abilities. Although Lee fought back with some technical prowess of his own, Backlund was able to quickly lock in the Crossface Chicken Wing for the victory.

Next, Showtime Shanklin looked to try his luck against Backlund but had no better luck as Buzz was able to withstand Shanklin’s offense and quickly rolled him up for another victory. Backlund’s third opponent in a row was revealed as Justice Davis who tried to match The American Standard’s ground game. While he did last longer than either of his previous opponents, Backlund picked up his third victory with another Crossface Chicken Wing.

A returning Jota Peso emerged as the next entrant, much to the dismay of Will Austin but the joy of the fans. After a show of sportsmanship, Backlund and Peso squared off before Backlund unsurprisingly tried taking the match to the mat. Peso was able to avoid it, withstanding Backlund’s offense before reminding fans that he’s just as good as he’s always been. With both men going back and forth, Peso finished the job with a Stunner to eliminate Backlund after a fantastic showing.

The next entrant was Maximo Suave, who was unable to even get into the ring before Peso nailed him with a Dropkick and Suicide Dive. Suave was able to recover, however, showing off his resilience and innovation as he hit unique maneuvers like the Slingshot Spear and a modified Neckbreaker. Despite the valiant effort, Peso eliminated Suave with a Stunner as well.

A banged-up Dustin Jackson stormed the ring after a great showing against Austin earlier tonight, bringing the fight to Peso as well. Jackson wore Peso down, including a textbook Falcon’s Arrow, but Peso later countered with a standing Shooting Star Press. As Peso tried delivering the Stunner, Jackson showed off a counter of his own, hitting the Claymore Kick for the big victory.

Next, Orion looked to try his luck against Jackson, slowing down the pace to wear Jackson down after an initial burst of speed. Orion continued dominating, hitting a variety of Springboard maneuvers and strikes before a double Clothesline downed both men. It was Orion, however, who took advantage with a Springboard German Suplex. Just when it looked like Jackson couldn’t even stand, both injured and exhausted, he played perfect possum, rolling up Orion for a sudden three count.

Jamin Olivencia looked to pick up the bones of Dustin Jackson, reaping the benefits of being the final entrant in a gauntlet match. An aggressive Olivencia grounded and pounded on a helpless Jackson before hitting a jumping DDT to put Jackson away. Another strong showing for Jackson, but Jamin Olivencia walked away victorious. On his way out, he beat down Josh the commentator for good measure, representing Revolution.

Result: Jamin Olivencia Becomes the New Number One Contender for the OVW Rush Division Championship

Match 6: Tusk N’ Chains (C) Vs Dalton McKenzie and AJZ (Tag Team Championship match)

Representing The Revolution, McKenzie and AJZ attacked the champs while they were still being introduced, stunting the usual fast start from Tusk N’ Chains. The challengers wore the champions down with their overwhelming power, quickly and shockingly ending the match with a simultaneous Chop-block from behind and Spear combo.

The rest of Revolution joined the new Tag Team Champions in the ring, dragging an unconscious and bloodied Luke Kurtis along with them, to celebrate with all their gold. After nearly decapitating Kurtis with a shot to the head with a baseball bat, the rest of the OVW roster came to the rescue, as injured as they all were. To Revolution, it was like sharks smelling blood in the water.

They looked to end the show on the same note as they started- beating down the entire roster. Suddenly, Cash Flow returned, clearing the ring and single-handedly destroying the entirety of Revolution.

Result: Dalton McKenzie and AJZ DEFEAT Tusk N’ Chains to Become New OVW Tag Team Champions

Overall

The energy in the Davis Arena was simply contagious, as both fans and wrestlers alike were thankful and ecstatic to finally be back in business. But it wasn’t all smiles and rainbows, as Revolution has a terrifying vice grip on the roster. We never know when they will emerge, who they will attack next, or the extent of the damage they will cause. On Rise 1307, they had the entire arena, including staff, fans, and wrestlers alike, scared for their safety as they went ahead and beat down the entire locker room. Twice.

Additionally, we have a new Women’s Champion in J-Rod who also seems to have aligned herself with Revolution! Add that to the newly won gold from AJZ and Dalton McKenzie and Revolution suddenly has all the gold.

As excited as we are to be back, Revolution reminded us that their reign of terror may be just beginning.
