AEW DYNAMITE BLOG

By Cory Strode on 2024-08-28 22:07:00

It is Wednesday and Dynamite is in the State Farm Center in Champaign, IL. Our commentary team is Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Taz.

We get a partial rundown of what is coming up tonight, and we get Jon Moxley with new theme music coming in through the crowd. Tony Schiavone meets him in the ring and asks “How are you doing, buddy?”

Mox says he came to have a conversation with someone who isn’t here, and that man is Darby Allin. It’s about time they had a talk, and he’s not going to be hard to find. Tony tries to move on, but Mox says it will take people some time to wrap their brains around it, but this is not your company any more.

Thank goodness they have finally dropped the facade that Tony Khan owns AEW and it’s really Tony Schiavone.  THAT’S A JOKE, I SAID A JOKE, SON

Backstage, Renee is with the Conglomeration, Willow and Hook. Mark Briscoe goes over all of the things coming up for everyone on the time. Willow says her match with Kris Statlander will be a Chicago Street fight.

Tomohiro Ishii vs Adam Page

Page has new music and comes to the ring bathed in red light. The announcers put over that these are two of the hardest hitting men in wrestling.

They start by throwing hands in the middle of the ring, neither taking a step back. And they keep it up until the first commercial break. When we come back, Page is able to finally knock Ishii down with a clothesline on the apron. Page gets a DDT on the apron and Ishii stays stuck head first on the apron. The announcers say that every time Page sees a child in the audience, he remembers what Swerve Strickland did to him, pushing the idea that Page is still filled with rage.

Page gets a series of big attacks until he gets an Indian Death Lock. Once Ishii gets to the rope it’s Ishii’s turn to beat the crap out of Page. They fight through a second commercial break. They come back to them countering each other’s big moves. Ishii hits a deadeye on Page when Page goes for a Buckshot that looked super dangerous. I have no idea how he took that one since it seemed that Page landed on his. Since Page popped right back up, it was a worked fall, but to outside eyes, it was scary as hell.

They go back to super stiff blows. Page gets a standard looking Deadeye followed with a Buckshot lariat for the pin and their win.

Winner: Adam Page

After the match Swerve Strickland says he should beat him up for interfering in his match, but instead, he feels bad for him because he’s acting like a child. He says Page’s actions are taking him further and further away from success. Swerve says it will always be his house. Page grabs the mic and rants at him that they fought 3 times, and Swerve couldn't beat him without help.

Page says he wants a match with just them. Swerve then says he’s fine with that, with a steel cage match at All Out. Swerve says after the three man match where Page gave up to keep Swerve from getting the title. Swerve says he went to Page’s house and followed him when Page took his wife to the hospital for his new child’s birth. He said that is when he knew he didn't have to beat Page, he just needed to win the title.

He says that Page can't win the big one because he’s focused on Swerve. He says because of that, his career is being burned to the ground. He then asks what kind of man Page will show his kids he’s gonna be. Page leaves the ring and Prince Nana gets to dance.

Jaime Hayter vs Harley Cameron w/Saraya

Hayter gets to dominate and show how she wrestlers, which is a power and strength based style. She wins with a pair of back breakers and a short arm clothesline they call Hayterade.

Winner: Harley Cameron

Renee is with Jericho, Large William, Bryan Keith and Roderick Strong.  William says that the fan reaction proves that the reactions of the fans change like the leaves in fall. Jericho says Hook has finally learned the lesson he was trying to teach him. Roderick says it is an honor to be a part of the Jericho vortex and needs to get Kyle O’Reilly free of Orange Cassidy.

And yes, Jericho brings up the $7000 jacket again that Cassidy ruined.

MJF heads to the ring with a suit and a mic. He says he has a terrible headache and if the fans annoy him, he will hop the rail and beat each person up. He says he lost his ring, his title and now has two herniated discs. He says the fans were not behind him as he fought for the country, so now he has denounced his citizenship.  Really great super-heel stuff here.

He then says he had Will Ospreay beat, but Ospreray cheated, so it’s not over between them. He says when Ospreay goes for the biggest prize in the country, he will cut him off at the knees with a smile. He then starts yelling at Daniel Garcia and Garcia hits the ring.

He chokes MJF out and then sets for a pile driver. But that’s not good enough. He puts MJF on the top turnbuckle and security hits the ring and Garcia fights them off. MJF attacks Garcia from behind. Garcia recovers and puts MJF on the top again. Christopher Daniels shows up with security to stop him.

It becomes a pull apart brawl. Garica grabs a mic and says he pawned the Dynamite Diamond to pay for his flight to All In. Garcia says that ruining MJF’s life is all he thinks about, and Tony Khan says they will fight at All Out. Garcia throws the mic at MJF and they are pulled apart again.

Next up is a video package for Ricochet.

Hook, Orange Cassidy, Mark Briscoe and Kyle O’Reilly vs Chris Jericho, Big Bill, Bryan Keith, and Roderick Strong

Time to give the in person fans a big match to get big time babyfaces a chance to show their stuff again the big time heels they have been feuding with.

The cheering for Big Bill has carried over a bit to this match. Not as big as in the UK, but more cheers than boos when he tags in.

I don’t say this to disparage the match, but this was pretty standard house show stuff where things go back and forth, everyone gets to get the spotlight for a while. This is almost the textbook definition of filling a couple of segments and giving the fans what they want. In the end Hook gets Reddum on Roderick Strong and he taps out while having a foot on the ropes.

Winners: Hook, Orange Cassidy, Mark Briscoe and Kyle O’Reilly

They brawl in and around the ring and we get another pull apart brawl. As Hook has been taken out, Strong grabs it and is help up on the shoulders of Mike Bennett and Matt Taven

In the back, Mercedes Mone is having a party with about 4 people. Private Party show up and says it isn’t a party without them. Isaiah Kassidy hits on Mone, and she shuts him down and has Okada tell them to leave.

Tony is on the stage and brings out Mariah May for her championship Celebration. She tells us the celebration has been postponed because she won’t do it in Champaign IL. And as someone who went to Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL, I have to agree with her. She heels the crowd and says the city needs glamor, and she will give them some by taking her robe off.

She shows the title over what looks like a negligee and then leaves.

We then get a video of the Grizzled Young Veterans and the Bucks show to say they like that they attacked FTR. GYV says they are coming for their title so when they see them coming, they need to grit their teeth. We are then told GYV will beat up a tag team on Rampage.

Ricochet vs Kyle Fletcher

This is an odd first match for Ricochet. You’d think you’d want him to get an easy win as a spotlight. Maybe they think we all know Ricochet, so he will just be accepted as a big star.

He’s also the kind of WWE guy that AEW fans like, someone who wasn’t treated well for most of his tenure, and is felt to have been suppressed in their ring. This is the type of fast action spotfest match that AEW fans like. In the end, Ricochet hits a reverse DDT they will be calling Vertigo.

Winner: Ricochet

This is continuing the story that Kyle Fletcher has ttroubel winning and Don Callis is not happy with him.

Will Ospreay comes to the stage and is given a poisonrana by Pac out of nowhere. Pac tells Ospreay not to foget about the bastard and welcomes Ricochet and tells him to get to the back of the line because Ospreay belongs to him. Ricochet comes to the stage to check on Ospreay.

Mox is back stage and when someone asks himj what is going on, Marina Shafir swhows and attacks random people and then shoves the cameraman.

Bryan Danielson comes to the ring and has something to say. He says after trying and trying and trying, he is now the NEW World Champion. He says winning the title was the best moment of his life. He says that his contract was up on August 1str, he needs neck surgery and hsi family is ready for him to come home. He says the fact that AEW exists makes his life better and makes professional wrestling better.

He then says he will not retire as champion and when he does finally lose, that will be the end of hsi full time career. He then throws out an open challenge for All Out. On the big screen, Jack Perry shows and goes over his big events since coming back and he says his future is to retire Bryan Danielson.

He then attacks Bryan from behind as his on screen promo was a pre-tape. Then again, the way they started it and then had to restart it gave that away. Perry nails Bryan with a running knee and holds up both the AEW title and his TNT title and we are out of time!
