FOR BETTER OR WORSE, THIS IS WHAT I SAID ABOUT GETTING INTO THE BUSINESS OF WRESTLING REPORTING ALMOST 30 YEARS AGO

By Dave Scherer on 2024-08-23 12:03:00

After hearing some chatter on Social Media the last two days about what I did or didn't do way back in 1995, I decided to take a trip back into the Way Back Machine and share the first page of the first issue of The Wrestling Lariat newsletter.  In the opening column, I shared some, but not all, of the story as to why I got into the business in the first place.

Love me or hate me, I think it shows I have been pretty consistent over the last 29 years.

THE WRESTLING LARIAT ISSUE ONE - JUNE 15, 1995

WELCOME!
By Dave Scherer

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to the inaugural edition of The Wrestling Lariat. I would like to first thank every person who subscribed to this newsletter sight unseen. You folks are all the greatest. As most of you know, this is the first ever, third generation newsletter. What started as Ron Lemieux's Arena Report, and then evolved into Barry Rose's Chairshots, has become your Wrestling Lariat. I am very proud of the group of guys that I have assembled to be part of this venture. When you talk about people like Tim Whitehead, Jeff Bowdren, Eddie Goldman, Chris Palacios, Hisaharu Tanabe, Carlos Rey, Jess McGrath, and hopefully myself, I feel we will make every issue worth the money you folks spend to read it. I also have to take a second to thank my pals Brian Socha, Eugie Stern, Jeff Lynch, and "Editor to the Stars" Paul Perdeus for all of their help thus far, and more importantly their help hereafter.

Enough of that. For those of you who were Chairshots subscribers, I want to explain where we will be different from our predecessor. I want this sheet, more than anything else, to accomplish four things:

1) I want every person reading this to feel that this is YOUR sheet. I want you to send me letters, news, results, and anything you would like to be printed. I want to run both a letters section and a plug trade column every issue. And you don't have to restrict yourself to only asking for or offering wrestling material. If you like watching Aussie Rules Football, for example, I want you to be able to ask for tapes, which Jeff Lynch will gladly supply you with. If you have news to report, send it in, and you will be credited with it. If you think something stinks, in the business or in this sheet, let me know. We are doing this sheet for you, so let us know what you like or don't.

2) Ron Lemieux, in passing his blessing to this sheet, said that he wants us to remain the voice and conscious of the hardcore wrestling fan. We will continue to speak our piece, although we will try to be a little less combative than we sometimes were in Chairshots. I have a feeling that line will come back to haunt me.

3) This sheet is written by and devoted to wrestling fans. I did not, as a 10 year old kid, turn on wrestling and say, "Wow, that was a 4 and 3/4 star match!" I did not say, "Bruno is a good worker, but where he really gets over is his great psychology." What I got into was the violence and the fact that every week I tuned in to see something happen. As I got older, I began to appreciate the above facets of the business, and for a while, forgot about the things that got me into the business to begin with. As I got even older, I realized how ridiculous it was to take the business, which was an entertainment diversion, so seriously. This sheet will pride itself on having fun with Pro Wrestling. We won't analyze, and over analyze, things that happen in the business. While I respect Dave Meltzer and the Observer, and understand why he takes the serious tone that he does, I don't ever want this sheet to lose the simple fun that attracted all of us to this psychotic pseudo sport to begin with.

4) I love Barry Rose, but even he will admit that at the end Chairshots took on a completely haphazard schedule. I won't let that happen. And for the many subbers who asked me, Barry plans on doing one more "goodbye" issue. After that, he will issue refunds to all who are due them.

The format of this publication will generally be sections covering each of the major promotions, along with columns, letters, and interviews. Our second issue will be out in three weeks because we will do some tinkering to get all the kinks out and all future issues will be in your mailbox every two weeks, unless otherwise noted beforehand. See the back page for details on how to contact us. Again, your feedback is both appreciated and expected, and thanks for being a part of the Lariat.
