INDEMAND, ONCE THE POWERHOUSE FOR PPV DISTRIBUTION, SHUTTING OPERATIONS

By Mike Johnson on 2024-05-13 10:56:00

InDemand, the pay-per-view powerhouse that once ruled the pay-per-view universe in the era where all events were distributed via cable, announced to staffers that they will be shuttering operations next year.

Formerly known as Viewer's Choice, InDemand was the distributor for all major professional wrestling PPV events and the original ECW famously had to battle to be cleared by the distributor in the late 1990s.  Obviously, with the rise of streaming devices and OTT services, their power and ability to be the destination for live events has greatly waned.  For a long time, PPV distribution was controlled by In Demand and RequestTV, which shuttered in June 1998.

In Demand CEO Dale Hopkins announced they would shutter at the end of 2025 to staffers this past Friday.  PPV distribution services would then shift directly to Comcast, Charter Communications and Cox Communications, who all share ownership.

InDemand had launched PPV.com in December 2021 as a way to stream events directly to consumers online, but it obviously did not bring them the positive pivot they had envisioned.  The PPV.com app will still operate post-shutdown.
