STING RETIREMENT MATCH NEWS AND NOTES

By Mike Johnson on 2024-03-06 13:04:00

For those who asked about Sting and Darby Allin retaining the AEW Tag Team Championships over the weekend, it was pretty much everyone's call that Sting should go out with a victory, but we are told Sting made it clear that he had no issue doing a job on his last night.  He was pretty much unofficially overruled as everyone from Tony Khan on down wanted it to be about Sting.

Lex Luger and Diamond Dallas Page did not appear on the PPV broadcast due to contractual obligations to WWE.

Sting's son Garrett, who appeared as the 1990s Sting in his father's ring entrance at AEW Revolution, wrote the following on his YouTube channel:

"Alright, it’s time for an update and a bit of a reveal. Last night, my dad, Sting, retired from his completely legendary pro wrestling career. My brother and I got to play a small part of his final match as younger versions of his character. I’ve got the American outfit, my brother has the red (or, Surfer Sting and Wolfpack Sting for any wrestling fans!) It was absolutely insane, and by far the coolest night of my entire life. The admiration and love from the fans toward my dad made me even more proud of him than I already am.  So, this is obviously why I’ve been a bit absent the past month or so. I was largely focused on looking as good as possible for the show, so lots of hours that would have been spent grinding Destiny were instead spent in the gym haha. All that to say, thanks for being patient. I can’t wait to upload again soon, and I’ll for sure try to do a recap video that goes more in depth on this weekend."

The Darby Allin spot in the retirement match was Allin's idea and call.  Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso wrote, "Once it was determined that Darby would make the jump, safety measures were applied. A rehearsal occurred earlier than usual in the day, and a stunt coordinator instructed how to place the items and reviewed the proper protocols. There were also nearby doctors anticipating the spot, and they were on high alert. And had Darby not been able to return to the match, the Bucks were prepared to call an alternate finish."

Allin received just stitches from the bump.  He is slated to go climb Mt. Everest on 3/27.

Sting is not currently slated for any upcoming AEW programming.
