TONY KHAN SAYS TONIGHT WAS A SECOND CHANCE FOR AEW & MANY OF ITS STARS: AEW MEDIA SCRUM NOTES FROM LONDON

By Mike Johnson on 2023-08-27 17:39:00

AEW Media Scrum Highlights:

-Tony Khan said there was an incident backstage.  They are investigating and until they learn what happened, they cannot address it.

-He said tonight was the highest sold ticketed event with 81,035 paid.  With comps and hospitality, they had 90,000 in Wembley.

-Khan said five years ago, All In was the biggest independent show ever and tonight was the biggest pro wrestling show, period.

-AEW Champion MJF said he was in the biggest main event in pro wrestling history and can say that ernestly and honestly,  He said the locker room is misfits who don't always get along but they come together to put together the best shows anyone has ever seen.  He is proud of himself and every every single "ditzy, weirdo nutjob motherf**er" in the locker room because they put on the best shows of our lifetime.

-They were asked about the idea of running Latin America.  MJF said he wants AEW to run Azteca Stadium.

-MJF said his neck was killing him after the match.

Adam Cole joined Khan and MJF.

-MJF said he was a scumbag but ready to be everyone's scumbag and loves being over.

-Adam Cole said this was a special wrestling moment and he never envisioned getting to wrestle in Wembley with a packed crowd.

Orange Cassidy was the next out.

-Cassidy said he was hurting but wouldn't change a thing.

-Cassidy wanted the Stadium Stampede match because of everything it meant to them but it felt weird not to defend the International title, so he asked to defend the belt on Wednesday at Dynamite.

-Khan said this was the biggest project in the history of the company.  Second would be Fight Forever.  He plugged the new Stampede download feature.

-Khan announced Penta would be challenging Cassidy at Dynamite.  Penta came out and faced off with Cassidy.

-The winner of Penta vs. Cassidy will face Jon Moxley at All Out.

Don Callis and Konosuke Takeshita were next out with Khan.

-Omega vs. Takeshita was made for All Out next week.

Saraya was next up.

-Saraya said that she, Toni Storn and Ruby Soho have been the most fun working together.

-Saraya said she never thought she would wrestle again.  She said when she got the call from Tony Khan, he was so positive and she started getting back in the gym and wanted to be part of it so bad.

-She never thought she's be AEW Champion and was so excited to be in Wembley with her family and to have Queen.

-Saraya said she was never allowed to acknowledge her family until that movie came out and Tony was all excited and said "Let's go!" when it came to her family being with her.  Her father was crying in the ring.

-Tony Khan said Mercedes Mone has not been cleared from her injuries, but he thought it would be great to have her to take in the show and see what AEW was all about.  He said she won't be cleared anytime soon but teased all sort of people want to get a shot with Saraya.

-Saraya said they have history and she wanted to win the title in front of Mercedes.  She said she can't wait for Mercedes to "join us, if you will."

-Khan said he loves working with Rev Pro in the UK and tries to help their friends when they can.  Sky Blue worked there yesterday.  Saraya said she'd love to do Rev Pro as well.

-Khan said this show was the highest high in pro wrestling.  He wants to continue building.  He said their Canadian moves this year were big steps forward.

-Someone asked about Chile.  He said that would be a big market to go to but it's a process and they are building things.

-Saraya said she was being patient and was trying to get back to the ring.  Her advice to anyone in the business is to stay humble, hungry and save your money.

-When asked about other members of Saraya's family being involved in AEW, Khan was open to it and said it's a great thought.  Saraya said Zack was coming over to the States in a few months, so perhaps they can bring them to some shows and see where it goes.

-Saraya announced she's been writing a book.  She said she's been through a lot and needed something special for the book.  She said Tony completed her book for her.  Khan said she did that.

-Khan said he's tried to build traditions with AEW and he wants everyone to know Bank Holiday weekend will be AEW in London.  He doesn't want to give up Labor Day weekend in Chicago and wants to keep it going "forever."

-They had 70 countries represented today in the crowd.

-Saraya said when she returned, she was very rusty and the company and the women were very patient with her.  She said social media was very cruel but she realized it's always cruel.  She would love to do more singles matches and will have to as the champ.  She said it wasn't making sense for her to do singles matches but now she had to work.  Khan said it made sense for her to be in tag and trios situations after coming  off such a long injury layoff.  Saraya said her doctors told her that her neck is 100% and that it is perfectly fine.  She will have aches and pains like any other wrestler.  AEW has been really supportive as have the women in the locker room.    it's the best locker room she's ever been in in her life.

-Khan said he would have loved to have had Rey Fenix in the Stampede but it wasn't possible.  They made the perfect audible.  He wanted Jamie Hayter and Pac involved and hopes they will be involved next year.

-Khan praised the growth of their TV on ITV, specifically noting Rampage was up 97% from a year ago.  He said he would have other numbers to release in the week ahead.

-Khan said they've had a lot of discussions with WBD after the Warnermedia merger.  They have paid a lot of attention to AEW and they've had conversations with Max about what they can do with their top events.

-Khan announced that AEW will hold a PPV on Sunday 10/1 in Seattle, Washington - the first-ever AEW WrestleDream, in honor of the first anniversary of the passing of "wrestling's greatest dreamer" Antonio Inoki.   He's hopeful of having a lot of New Japan participation in the show and they've had conversations.

-The 2023 AEW Full Gear PPV will be Saturday 11/18 in Los Angeles, CA at the Forum.  Khan did not comment on how that would impact the scheduled AEW Collision episode that evening.  As PWInsiderElite.com noted earlier today, there has been talk of the company expanding their PPV schedule recently.

-Khan said they've created a real spirit of competition in pro wrestling.

-Tonight's PPV buyrate will be up there with their biggest of all time.

-Khan said he felt the company was in such a hot place.  They had a great night at the Forum but by the end of that week, MJF had walked out, Adam Cole. Bryan Danielson and CM Punk was hurt.  The summer was challenging and tonight, the show was as good as it's ever been.  Tonight was their chance to get as hot as they have ever been again.    He said Adam Cole had to fight to come back and become as hot as possible again.  He praised The Acclaimed and said this was their second chance to be as hot as they've ever been again.  Saraya went from thinking she would never wrestle again and to have her journey end here, you don't get as many second chances like that.  MJF put him in a challenging position and then came back under challenging circumstances and now he's the hottest he's ever been.  He said there aren't a lot of second chances in life and to have that many people have a shot at redemption and pull it off, it was the greatest night of his life in the pro wrestling business.

-Khan said when he got involved, everyone tried to sell him their company.  New Japan wasn't a fan of him getting into the business but have come to learn that he was honest and would treat them fairly.  He said no one gets wrestling right all the time and he doesn't, but he tries to use his knowledge of wrestling history and what he's learned from the sports world.

-The weekend of Full Gear, AEW Collision will be that Friday at the Forum in Los Angeles.

-Khan said this event needed to be the company's debut in the UK/Europe.  There's only one first time.  He would consider more TV tapings next year when they return to Wembley.

-Khan said TNT wanted Collision and that's opened lots of new possibilities for their broadcast revenue.

-Khan will miss the 10/1 Jaguars game here in the UK due to the Seattle PPV.  That will be only the 4th game he'll miss since his family bought the team.

-Khan said they would love to run Germany as its one of the best markets in the world.  He said there were a lot of German fans here that he spoke with.

-Khan closed out saying this was the biggest paid attendance for pro wrestling on the planet.
