ECW Founder Tod Gordon was interviewed today by FOX News to promote this Tuesday's release of his memoir Tod is God: The Authorized Story of How I Created Extreme Championship Wrestling.
In the interview, Gordon, who still operates one of the oldest businesses in Philadelphia, Carver W. Reed, made it clear that he felt that the version of events that led to ECW's rise in the 1990 were recorded properly. In the interview, Gordon talks of the ravenous devotion fans had to the brand but also makes it clear the dissolution of his relationship with Paul Heyman was a big reason the book was written, spun out of comments Heyman made in a WWE DVD documentary about Gordon's exit from ECW in 1997.
"It wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t honest, and it’s been told completely differently for almost 30 years now," Gordon said of the story of ECW. "That’s the reason I needed to write a book. I needed to set the record straight."
On what he hopes fans will take from the book, Gordon commented, "I think, for one, not to believe everything that they’ve seen or told. Two, all the debauchery that was the reputation of ECW was real. I tell story after story involving the drugs, the sex, the rock and roll and the whole bit. And who was involved, who wasn’t involved. What we did was pretty inclusive, and some of the stories you will fall down laughing, and some you’d say, ‘Wow, that’s kind of sad.’"
The book will be officially released on 7/25 in the United States and Canada with the UK edition following on 9/28.
Gordon and his co-author Sean Oliver of Kayfabe Commentaries will be signing copies of Tod's memoir on Saturday 8/26 before and after a 6 PM screening of Barry Blaustein's Beyond the Mat at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, NYC. Gordon and Oliver will also be introducing the screening of the excellent 1999 documentary, which focuses on Terry Funk, Mick Foley, Jake Roberts, the WWF and Extreme Championship Wrestling's first-ever PPV Barely Legal.
