7/16/23 Results from New Japan's G1 Climax 33 from Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan:
1 - Tomohiro Ishii vs. David Finlay, with Gedo
Finlay pins Ishii after hitting Into Oblivion.
Good stiff match. Finlay had to hit his entire arsenal to take out Ishii.
2 - Hirooki Goto vs. Toru Yano
Yano brought a character in costume to the ring. Silly comedy stuff.
Goto hit a GTR and pinned Yano.
3 - Mikey Nicholls vs. Henare
Henare comes to the ring with new music, new ring gear and facial tattoos, representing his Polynesian culture from New Zealand. He looks like a beast. He is just going by “Henare”.
Stiff match. Nicholls threw a headbutt which busted himself open on Henare’s head.
Nicholls hit a Master Blaster, but never had control of Henare’s body, and dropped Henare on his head. Scary moment.
Nicholls pins Henare.
Young lions quickly jumped in the ring to check on both men. Nicholls left on his own. Henare needed help from the ring.
Hopefully Henare is ok.
4 - Shane Haste vs. Alex Coughlin
Solid match from both men. Coughlin threw chairs in the ring. Haste hit a back suplex on the chairs. Haste picked up Coughlin on his shoulders and flipped him into a uranage.
Haste pins Coughlin.
5 - Shingo Takagi vs. Eddie Kingston
Lots of strikes and lariats in this match. Both men’s chests were red from chops.
Kingston hits two stiff backhand shots to Takagi’s ear. Kingston hits the Northern Lights Bomb.
Kingston pins Takagi
Nice win for Kingston. I am happy for him to get his first win in the G1. Kingston even checked on Takagi using hand signals to make sure he was OK.
6 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
Lots of submissions in this match. Tanahashi wrestled like ZSJ and attempted several submissions. Tanahashi hit three Dragon Screw Arm whips and tried for a cross arm breaker. ZSJ blocked the submission as rolled up Tanahashi into a cradle.
ZSJ pins Tanahashi.
7 - Tama Tonga, with Jado vs. EVIL, with Dick Togo
Lots of tricks by EVIL and Togo.
Tama goes for the Gun Stun. EVIL blocks it and throws a low blow. EVIL hits Everything is Evil.
EVIL pins Tama.
8 - Tetsuya Naito vs. Jeff Cobb
Cobb used his power to keep Naito off balance. Cobb playfully mocked the leader of LIJ. Naito fought back and hit his signature moves. Cobb hits a release German suplex. Naito hulks up. Cobb with a headbutt and plants him with Tour of the Islands.
Cobb pins Naito.
This was Cobb’s first single match victory over Naito.
Cobb takes Naito baseball cap and he does the United Empire Roll Call for the crowd.
