DANIEL PUDER GETTING WALLOPED IN THE ROYAL RUMBLE, THE IWGP, CYNDI LAUPER AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2023-06-29 10:03:00

I wanted to ask about Daniel Puder from Tough Enough. It looked like he was given a very unwelcoming reception at the Royal Rumble. I believe at the time WWE was a public company, so it would seem very low class and possibly liable for them to allow Bob Holly, Benoit and Eddie to beat on the new guy for no other reason than to be bullies. I get paying dues, etc., but is there more to the story than embarrassing Kurt Angle (when Angle asked for it), or bragging about how he was in the "Main Event" at the rumble (because he was in the Rumble)? While neither of these were smart moves, they could and should have been chalked up to rookie mistakes. It doesn't seem to warrant the response of giving the kid a brutal beating for no story line build up. Was he aware this was going to happen and was there any fallout from this?

I don't believe there was any fallout.  I am sure it was booked to entertain someone who wasn't happy with Puder.  It was a different time in the business and certainly something that wouldn't happen in today's WWE.

I know that New Japan is governed by the IWGP, but does IWGP govern anything else? I’ve always wondered why New Japan’s titles have the IWGP branding instead of just being known as the NJPW World Championship, Tag Team Championship, etc.

No, it's just a fictional governing body, nothing more.

Who is the one wrestler or wrestling personality you wished you could have met, but couldn’t due to geographical distance or them passing away?

The obvious would have Bruiser Brody, who passed away when I was just 14 years old, so it was an impossibility.

Also, which in person interaction with a wrestler in your career made you mark out the most?

I don't know that I ever "marked out" as an adult, especially when this ended up becoming my actual career.  As a kid, meeting Big John Studd when I was like 10 was a massive thrill.  As an adult, there was never anything better than dealing with, seeing or interviewing Terry Funk.  He was the absolute best.  Roddy Piper was extremely kind to me and my partners when we ran a film festival here in NYC.  i have had 99% all positive interactions with those I've dealt with and have lots of similar stories.  There are lots of people I was thrilled to interact with and enjoyed that, like interviewing CM Punk on stage live on PPV, but one I recognized this was going to be my job, I took it seriously as such.

Any word on that Cyndi Lauper documentary coming out?

No distribution has been announced for it as of yet.

Is she working with WWE again??  I saw they sent Kayla Braxton to interview her.

I am sure WWE would love to work with her.  We will see.
